This was a busy week in the Chamber, representing Furness and my constituents in three ministerial statements. The first was on antisemitism, after seeing the disgraceful incidents in London and beyond. The slogans alone amount to appalling hate crimes, so my question was about online hate. This is a matter of concern raised by dozens of constituents, in particular the written abuse that festers online both on mainstream and smaller platforms. Hate speech is criminal activity and is rightly one of the targets of the upcoming Online Safety Bill. I also asked a specific question of the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on the funding for new nuclear. This is a big issue for the Cumbrian coast: we have a community willing and able to be the home of the next generation of nuclear power. I pushed the Business Secretary on when the funding framework for it will be published. His response was reassuring and should bode well for our community.
