Almost two months have passed since the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, yet there are few signs that the wounds of that tragic day will heal anytime soon. Images of angry crowds waving Trump banners and QAnon extremists assaulting our nation’s heart of government symbolize our deep divisions as a people. Those divisions were also on display last summer during widespread protests against racism and police shootings; violence sometimes followed peaceful protest. There was also skyrocketing violent crime in many U.S. cities during the pandemic.
