LANCASTER - In an effort to bring more affordable housing to the city, Lancaster City Council is examining ordinances to change building codes. The ordinance was introduced at the beginning of February. If approved, it would permit triplex homes, one building with three separate family units, within the community reinvestment area approved by council in June 2019. During a public hearing Monday, city officials explained the why the code needed updated, and why the wording of the changes mattered. Lancaster Mayor David Scheffler said a study in 2018 by the Ohio Housing Finance Agency found there was a significant shortage of housing available in the county. After hearing from developers that current infrastructure and Environmental Protection Agency regulations discouraged developing existing lots within the city, the CRA passed in 2019 was created.
