Council fails to address 17 years of safety fears along rural Tīrau road

Horahora Rd residents Ann Paget and Leo Wolters are two of many calling for speed-reducing measures to be put in place.
Residents of a rural Tīrau road won’t be surprised when a dangerous driver kills one of their own.
But after 17 years of calling on the South Waikato District Council to install double yellow lines along a built-up section of Horahora Rd and reduce the speed from 100km to 80km, rest assured they’ll be angry.
It comes as the scenic road, which has seen dozens of new homes built over the past few years and an influx of cyclists due to the Waikato River Trails, has become a bit of a speedway bypass from Tokoroa’s Old Taupō Rd to State Highway 1, 10km north of Tīrau. The advent of GPS has progressively worsened the situation.
