Courtesy-CPD FB page COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus Chief of Police Michael Richardson recently awarded five Columbus Police Department (CPD) officers letters of commendation for their actions in safely resolving a call involving a mentally ill man armed with a knife. On July 31, 2020, CPD Sgt. Oscar Olmeda was checking the welfare of a man with a history of mental health issues. While Olmeda spoke with him, the man produced a knife and threatened to harm the officer, who then retreated and requested assistance. Sgt. Robert Mitchell, along with officers Alex Hill, Andrew Celik, and John Busack responded to help Olmeda and they all continued for over 90 minutes to try to get him to drop the knife. The officers eventually used a Taser and bean bag rounds in an attempt to get the man to release the weapon but he still refused.
