This opinion column was submitted by Dr. Kristen McNeill, superintendent of the Washoe County School District. As the superintendent of the Washoe County School District, I am consistently impressed with how our district and school communities come together for our students. What we have accomplished together this year and during a global pandemic is truly remarkable. During this unprecedented time, in our country and in our community, it is essential for us to remember what we know about the importance of civil discourse and the ability to discuss important topics where all voices are heard and honored. On Tuesday, our Board of Trustees will be discussing proposed supplementary materials for the English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for students in grades kindergarten through fifth that address topics on government, citizenship, social justice and ways to deepen cultural understanding and students’ worldviews. There has been much community interest in these proposed materials.
