Share Updated: 5:52 PM CDT Jul 21, 2021 Crews are preparing to swap traffic onto the newly constructed Interstate 20 eastbound bridge and roadway between Terry Road and Gallatin Street in Jackson. Weather permitting, the traffic switch will begin about 7 p.m. Wednesday, until 6 a.m. Thursday. "During this time period, motorists should expect alternating lane closures on I-20 eastbound and I-55 northbound between Terry Road and Gallatin Street in Jackson," officials with the Mississippi Department of Transportation said in a news release.Crews are making preparations in advance to minimize impacts to traffic, including staging precast barrier walls, temporary striping and cleanup efforts. The Terry Road on-ramp to I-20 eastbound will close at 7 p.m. Wednesday and remain closed until it is tied into the newly constructed bridge, MDOT officials said.“It’s a big investment into MS transportation. I-20 is a major cross country route and this will just be a major benefit to not only local traffic but also goods and services that move throughout MS as well," said Mike Flood, MDOT.The bridge spans U.S. Highway 51, I-55 south, and the Canadian National/Illinois Central Railroad in Hinds County. The new bridge is being built on a new alignment to keep closures to a minimum during construction. The existing I-20 bridge will be demolished. "This project is a major investment into Mississippi’s transportation infrastructure," said Commissioner Willie Simmons, Central Transportation District. "Once complete, the new bridge will improve safety and travel conditions along the entire I-20 corridor."Additional work underway includes slide repairs, slope stabilization along the ICRR and traffic monitoring system installations within Hinds and Rankin counties. Crews will also widen the roadway along I-20 eastbound and I-55 northbound for the new bridge alignment.Work began on the I-20 eastbound bridge replacement project in March 2020 and remains on track to be completed by summer 2022. The $42.2 million project was awarded to Key, LLC, of Madison.
