Via Google Maps The upcoming closure of an Associated supermarket is prompting food desert fears Crown Heights residents are worried about a food desert potentially forming in the western part of their neighborhood, the Brooklyn Paperreports. The Associated supermarket, at 975 Nostrand Avenue, near Montgomery Street, was recently given a 90-day notice to leave the building after lease negotiations reportedly fell through. Even though a commercial eviction moratorium is currently in place through the end of this month — and will likely be extended like it has previously by Gov. Andrew Cuomo throughout the pandemic — local residents fear that this is the end of the road for the grocery store. While there are some other options in the area like a Western Beef supermarket further west on Empire Boulevard, local residents say they will have to trek significantly longer distances to shop for groceries.
