ALBANY, NY (WSKG) – New York has paused administering the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, after the federal FDA and CDC recommending halting the doses because a small percentage of recipients developed blood clots.
Six of the 6.8 million Americans who have already received the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, all of them women, developed blood clots after receiving the doses. One died and another was hospitalized in critical condition.

After the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control announced the temporary halt Tuesday morning, Governor Andrew Cuomo said New York State is also pausing the doses.

The Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine was billed as a “game-changer” to rapidly inoculate New Yorkers and reopen the city.
So when federal health officials this morning recommended a pause in its use, state and city officials scrambled to assuage concerns about the stoppage and redirect thousands of New Yorkers expecting to get inoculated.

Now that the state budget has been adopted, there are a handful of issues that will likely become focus points for lawmakers and Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Some of them are expected, while others are less-discussed items.
Among the items up for debate is parole law changes, which would overhaul parole laws in New York. Advocates say the changes would make it easier for incarcerated people to be released, and include more provisions for elderly parolees.

Mobile vaccination sites are coming to New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday.
The mobile vaccination effort will be led by Sun River Health. The New York Farm Bureau has been calling for this type of effort to vaccinate farm workers.
“We want to get everyone vaccinated,” Cuomo said. “We need to reach herd immunity. It’s a fascinating situation where until everybody is safe, nobody is safe.”
Many farmworkers across New York are migrants and seasonal workers. They arrive during the early-spring months, so advocates say it’s important to get them vaccinated soon.

Pro-Yang PACs take shape as the mayor's race enters prime time

NEW YORK — The money race is heating up in New York’s mayoral primary.
A top-tier political consultant is launching an effort to boost Andrew Yang’s candidacy with a goal of raising $6 million for TV ads — one of at least three political action committees in the works to propel the current front runner to City Hall.
Lis Smith, a senior adviser to Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, is in talks with potential donors and staff about forming a PAC that would operate outside the city’s strict campaign finance limits to counter negative advertising against Yang, several people familiar with the calls told POLITICO.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo's spin on the tax hikes in the state budget approved this month is this: they won't really count when the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions is repealed by Congress.
But it's not entirely clear when, or if, that cap put in place as part of the 2017 federal tax law will actually be thrown in the wastebin by the narrow Democratic majorities in Congress.
New York's own Democratic House delegation on Tuesday nevertheless kept up the cause. A letter released by Reps. Tom Suozzi and Jerry Nadler, signed by 15 Democrats from New York, sent a warning to their leadership: they could wind up opposing future tax bills if the cap is not repealed.

Instead of the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, they were offered a dose of the two-shot Moderna brand.
Putnam County officials had planned on giving out both at two vaccination clinics in Garrison Tuesday. That changed abruptly when the Federal Drug Administration and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a joint recommendation to pause administering Johnson & Johnson.
“People who have been coming in today that were expecting the J and J with our quick change really handled it well. Most of them did stay for the Moderna and were thankful and it wasn’t a negative experience at all — it all turned out pretty well,” said Kathy Percacciolo, Putnam County Health Department’s supervising public health nurse.

The Supreme Court Reaffirms That COVID-19 Regulations Must Comply With the First Amendment

Card image cap

When Christians met in each other's homes for prayer or Bible study, they had to be careful. Such gatherings were illegal, and the organizers never knew who might inform the authorities.
Although that sounds like a scene from the Soviet Union, it actually describes the situation in California under COVID-19 regulations that the Supreme Court blocked last Friday. By issuing an injunction against Gov. Gavin Newsom's restrictions, the Court reaffirmed that politicians must comply with the Constitution when they decide how to deal with an epidemic.
The main rule at issue in this case limited at-home religious gatherings, whether inside or outside, to people from no more than three households. If two people from different households joined a host for a prayer meeting or Bible study session, for example, no one else was allowed to come.
