To start in good shape off with, but their electric sod is totally destroyed and many other things. We are starting the process now the governork with and the people of puerto rico, ut puerto rico is a whole different category in many ways. O i can defer to you, if you want me to make my comment, i will. Host lets start with the state and n your Recovery Efforts in your state. Aller well, you know, first i live in north dallas, four hours from houston. Frankly, i was in cincinnati visiting, taking care of my mother. Texas today. But from my understanding, my wife is there, obviously, the hurricanes didnt impact the dallas area, obviously. Very troubled that many just in at we go, not the United States, but also in caribbean areas and , im k at puerto rico concerned we use destinations as places for entertainment and enjoyment and there has not been focus on the erritories that are badly damaged and so it does trouble on hat while we concentrate the 48 states and continental, focus on the areas that enjoying lot of time ourselves. Im really troubled by that, i of relief e kind focus, the campaigns. Say for instance, the campaign in houston, there is nothing come close to that that deals puerto rico, Virgin Islands nd other territories that have been decimated in a worse sense than what happened in houston. Working on her doctorate in florida, she had to florida briefly. The hurricanes are not just about florida or houston, those tragic situations. We need to come out of this just about in houston and texas and look at territories that have been decimated more so. The sentiment reflected by the Washington Post today. Is t forget puerto rico, what they write. President trump approved disaster declaration for puerto and needed step, they write, it will make federal available to puerto rico. He plans to visit puerto rico for mr. S important trump to go to texas and florida to show the countrys commitment it is important to go to puerto rico. In doing so, he sets an example country, st of the like houston and florida, the devastated island needs our help. Bill is in sebastian, florida, the line for those impacted by recent hurricanes. Go ahead. Morning, ah, good john. Yeah, i live here in a trailer tre directly across the street from the indian river. Had re fortunate, we only , there was some damage the d barefoot bay, with homes and i was fortunate enough shelter. A sunrise unrise people needed electricity for machines and whatnot. The people there did an excellent job and there were people there. What they did, they used in a ooms, four of us classroom. Elderlyn there with some people, 90 years old. Hey have their breathing equipment and myself, as well. Running this shelter . Officials . Caller Public School ran by mr. Pritchitt, the principal. You had county workers that were working on the clock and 12hour shifts and you had the people in the kitchen working all day know, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Well run. Elievably host have you talked to mr. Pritchard since the storm . Caller no, i havent. I havent gone back over there, i told him let him know great job they all did. Nd it was called sunrise elementary school. And they just did a fantastic job, you know, they converted a ssrooms and gave everyone cot. You had the electricity and the generator, which went out once, the electric went out once electric urned the back on with the alternative generator. All, it was, you know, i how urprised, you know, well it went and more surprised my trailer was still here. Bill, thanks for the call from florida this morning. Another front page from one of florida papers. Florida today. Beaches taking a 37 do not hit, damages include the residences and businesses. Of course, the the recovery costs, the packages that are and moving through Congress Certainly something that we have been following and tracking, talking with members of congress about. Well be joined by two members of congress coming up this congressman frances rudy of the 19th district of florida. Earlier this im week about his district after his week down there. On what his thoughts hes seeing, what hes xperienced this week and then later today, well be talking to plascit, the delegate from the virgin island. Hit way writes, we were hard by irma and find debris clean up difficult because of businesses working for cities and counties. And t. J. Says any recovery that well, democrats will be silent. Ny recovery that has problems, democrats are quick to put the blame on President Trump. Impacted by miami, the recent hurricanes. Good morning. Caller good morning. Impacted by the amount of trees that fell, but everyone in out there and t cleaned them up. What i wanted to say was, of this state did an job. Llent he gets on television telling that were in affected places to move to shelters. They open up a lot of shelters. I went through hurricane andrew. Lost my house then. We had then, or who was a democrat, did nothing. Ly nothing. When the hurricane was coming. So a big change. Thank you very much. Host thanks for the call. By recent hurricanes, want to talk about the Recovery Efforts, 2027488000. Others, past hurricane seasons, want to hear your 2027488001. Ll, as youre calling in this orning, as we noted cspans crews were in houston this past week and while we were down here, we spoke with the red cross about Recovery Efforts. Here is what they had to say funds wereome relief being used there. The of the 300 million the received for Hurricane Harvey is going to all the to be back here to the community. Were going to use all that the hurricane, for the efforts. 90 . 91 of every dollar received will go back to provide . 09 is and the other had 3100 lunteers, we workers and volunteers around texas. We have 190 emergency vehicles round the affected areas providing food and hygienic also to provide meals and thing. At kind of . 91 of every dollar of the 300 back to provide the services and the rest, the going for logistics and management and things like that. Your calls taking this morning. S we discuss the impact of the recent hurricanes, want to hear your stories. Theou have been impacted by hurricanes, tell us about recovery effort necessary your area, how you are working with local officials, what interactions have been like, 2027488000. All others, for certainly want to hear your tories, as well, from past hurricanes. As you call in, we want to turn to the united tates delegate from the virgin island, stacy plaska joining us phone. The thank you for your time this morning. Tell us what youre hearing from islands. N i know you are in d. C. , how are you communitying with folks down thee and give us a sense of impact. There is some cell reception in some areas, there are quite a number of people who have access people are so communicating by facebook. That e two radio stations have been able to get themselves up so communications are way and l that satellite telephones are in place. Me thankful you have given the time to let everybody know what has happened in the u. S. Virgin stand thomas and lost st. St. John, tremendous instruction the islands from past hurricanes, where we lost ur hospital, the roof came off the hospital, so many homes were lost, along with other public infrastructure. Police stations, fire stations, schools were destroyed in irma. Hat was a category 5 when it hit the island of the north side f the island of st. Thomas and st. John. St. Croix had not used as eating and was base camp for much of the relief thomas and g to st. St. John. Island of through the st. Croix as category 5, almost a direct hit, which means now on island, as well, there is tremendous devastation, also. We we are going to be mediva cing hospital patients transferred from st. Thomas to croix, they on st. Have to be removed. We thought that we were able to children over to go to croix and finish out the school year that, is not a possibility now. Dont even have like puerto no utility is service rosworking right now, generator, which cannot last. It is estimated, unless we get support from the federal government, we will not least ilities on for at three months. So its going to be tremendous effort. A lot of resources and a lot of attention are being spent on its size o because of and the number of occupants, im us eful you are letting speak, we are also part of the United States and many people in islands are feeling like were being forgotten, particularly when weve been hit both hurricanes. Host people try to understand there,e of the need down weve talked about perhaps 150 billion dollars or more for the houston area for recovery. Do you have a sense at this point of what it is going to islands . The virgin devastation ow is our governor yesterday was visit for an aerial see, roix, to be able to but were not even able to clear he debris still to get to all the buildings, to get to each our Public Housing structures, areas of the island to get a true assessment. Andt now it is still search rescue, trying to find trapped ls who may be in their homes. My own i still do not know looks like at e this point because family embers have not been able to traverse or even walk to where y house is with the downed trees and poles, to be able to get on what that looks like. So were still, we do know that we have no utilities, so that alone, building and bringing materials to an island is so expensive than it is to the state. So just the cost of shipping materials, cargo planes coming other places in the United States. Been destroyed means that [cuttingng has to start out]a00 in a place our finances were already strained. To need so much help from the federal government and that is the fight im having discussions with members of congress, the senate themhe house to explain to the degree going to need the support. Resistanceou getting in that fight . Resistance, i the is not directly face on, but the is through things cassidy ht now the graham amendment, the amendment to the health care bill, which to cut federal funding and federal support in the islands. [cutting out] resources have o go into that area to treat to the ho cant go other thats the kind of resistance that im that we to overcome. E already had disparity in our federal funding formula for infrastructure, weve not been a new school for 20 years. And were t take going to lose an entire tourist season. April w, october through is when most of our tourists ome down, when we have the highest influx and that is not going to be there. Across the island, our trees are bare, it looks like winter there. Brown from the salt blast on all the everything on the island. Host delegate, we want to say thank you for your time. Us perspectiveng on what is happening in the Virgin Islands. Not the atmosphere causing Climate Change here. Its manmade. Warring against each other since day one and now the iggest issue is Climate Change and nuclear with north korea. North Korea Nuclear weapon going to initely change, make the Climate Change. Big issue. E war is a pensacola, florida. How are you this morning . Caller were doing good. For people at n the red cross. We have a center down here called the baby center, that was opened up for like three or four days to the refugees that came of south florida and the people were up here, pregnant women, families, grandparents and such and they spent all they here. Come up they let them into this baby center for three or four days then they told them they had to leave the next morning, forewarning. They had to be out by noon. I went down there trying to find places to go, people would camp out, if they had a place to camp. The red cross actually lied to the community when they found activists were here trying to get the people where stay longer ace to and the red cross just turned them over to the community and he church and everything, told them they had to get out. I dont understand that and id to why have an answer as this happened. Host we appreciate the question this morning.
