CSPAN On The Phone With S.A. Miller February 10, 2018

Senate immigration debate on what impractical terms does that mean . That means that any bill that is put up has a shot at becoming the immigration bill if they can get the 60 votes. They are one to start with a blank bill that they will put up monday. By wednesday they will start taking votes on bills that would replace that. Substitution amendments, they call them. And then everyone it is unsure now, unclear how many bills that will be, but im sure it will be several. Let me reference a headlight of yours this past week. Senate raised about immigration bill deadline. What can you tell us . That is a group of about 30 senators, a bipartisan group, the common sense caucus. They are trying to come up with a deal that satisfies both sides. It is tough going to find changes to Legal Immigration rules that the president wants to see change. The visa lottery, or restricting or limiting the family based chain migration policies. You know, it is just hard to get people on the same table. They have got something that they are kicking around out there, which i dont know that they will satisfy the white house. Same they seemed to limit the amount of money that they will put up for a border wall. You mentioned the white house proposal. , ay had the opening salvo couple of details on the white house immigration or postal. It would add 25 billion to a border wall. It would call for a path to citizenship and would limit the Chain Migration Program and and the visa lottery program. Of all the details in the white house proposal, what do you think their top priority . I think the Border Security and the money for a border wall is one of the top things. That is one of the reasons some folks have been looking for kind of a fallback position. The smallest bill would be something that gets some kind of legal status, maybe even short of citizenship, maybe a continuation of the daca program , which is basically kind of a Guest Worker Program for the dreamers. Provides one year, three years of funding for the board will border wall. In terms of the Senate Debate , the senate itself is facing a couple of deadlines. They have got the president s day holiday coming up, and then you write about march 5. Why is that a key date in terms of immigration . That is on the phaseout takes full effect for the deferred action for childhood arrivals program, daca. It is notat runs out, the 1. 8 million, were talking more like about 690,000 people who have signed up in the daca program. They are Illegal Immigrants who came to the u. S. As minors and have lived their whole life, and they are now adults. They signed up for this daca protection. Once march 5 comes, they pretty much booze that protection and they would be subject to deportation should they come into contact with i. C. E. Assuming a bill comes out of the senate, what do we know about what the house will do . That is a tough one. Said Speaker Paul Ryan has that he is only going to take up a bill that the president will sign, which is kind of eliminating some of the options on the democratic side. They have been pushing for a freewheeling debate. Im sure your viewers saw nancy pelosi on the floor for eight hours yesterday. She was demanding that they get that kind of process in the house. How that eventually gets handled remains to be seen, but for now it looks like it is going to be whatever comes out of the senate is most likely to be the bill in the house.
