We have come here asking for your vote, humbled by the knowledge that, for so many, that vote was one first struggle, sweat blood, and tears. I am proud of the votes we have earned and i am determined to earn every vote on the road ahead. I want to salute all of our competitors and i congratulate the Vice President on his victory tonight in south carolina. Want to thank the voters of south carolina. Especially black voters that show the famous Southern Hospitality over the years, welcoming us into their homes, churches, neighborhoods, and businesses. I want to thank our entire team. Every supporter of this effort. And everyone that has gone to pete for america. Com that helped us come up with the 13 million to get us to the next stage. I want to thank the Amazing Campaign family and my amazing family who has stood with me from Northern Indiana all the way to north carolina. At this moment, as a mounting epidemic threatens our economy and our communities, we see how much it will matter to have serious judgment and the steady temperament in the oval office. Not to mention a belief in the science and evidence. So, more than ever, we know we cant afford to get this wrong. We cant afford four more years of donald trump in this country. And that means we cannot afford to succumb to the politics that have failed us. Thatnt go on to politics has us at each others throats instead of having each others backs. We cant go on with politics that define us by who we voted for in the past instead of what we can achieve together in the future. We know that the challenges of this moment are different. Pandemics crossing borders, climate catastrophe on our doorstep. Automation and globalization riffling through the economy. Rippling through in new ways. Americans are watching as the cost of health care and housing rises. Wages cant keep pace area we must be prepared to meet the challenges of the future. Americans are crying out for a new kind of leadership, hungry to be united and common purpose. If we were to tackle these challenges, we have to come together to write a new story for our future. [applause and cheers] so lets make this election about that future and lets make it a future where every other american belongs. [applause and cheers] this is how we win. It is always how we have one. Democrats win when we offer a new vision, a new generation of leadership, calling our country to its deepest ideals. [applause and cheers] lives hundreds of miles away from washington in a middleclass neighborhood in a diverse city in the industrial and west, i am offering a new approach. I am offering a nominee and presidency where you can turn on the tv and feel your Blood Pressure go down instead of up through the roof. [applause and cheers] wouldnt that be nice . [applause and cheers] i am offering a chance to turn the page on our broken politics without turning most americans off from our politics. [applause and cheers] i am offering away together together a powerful american majority united not only by the incumbent we stand against what the vision we stand for. [applause and cheers] and i have seen that majority reaching from the carolinas to california, from virginia to vermont, the formerly incarcerated individual to the former republican i love when that happens, who now organizes for our campaign. [applause and cheers] it is that coalition, not one faction, that will bring about a future, where there is no such thing as an uninsured american or an unaffordable prescription. [applause and cheers] a future were Mental Health is treated as seriously as an dull with as openly as any other medical injury. Dealt with as openly as any other medical injury. It is that majority that will Climate Crisis in the with emergency actions. It is the majority that will ensure work is rewarded as much as wealth and that one job is enough in america whether you got a College Degree or not. [applause and cheers] this is the majority that will bring an end to endless war abroad and to the bloodshed at home. The kind of gun violence that took the lives of those in chapel hill. We are ready to see to it the Second Amendment is never again twisted into an excuse to do nothing at all. [applause and cheers] this is the majority that will act for a vision where you race has no bearing on your health or on your wealth, opportunity in life or ability to cast a ballot anywhere in the United States of america. We must act. [applause and cheers] edit is a majority that stands ready to honor our teachers a little more like we do soldiers and pay them a little more like we do doctors. [applause and cheers] this is the majority we will seek to energize into super tuesday and beyond, welcoming new allies as we go. [applause and cheers] just a few minutes ago i was reunited here with somebody that i served with overseas in afghanistan. A fellow american whose story is linked to my own. [applause and cheers] there you are. [applause and cheers] let us recognize everyone who has served this country at any time and in any capacity. [applause and cheers] one of the joys of this campaign have been those reunions. It has me thinking about those days where 7000 miles away from america i learned a great deal about america. I saw how was so many things i saw how so many things matter more. I came to determine its terms with the limits of things and just because i wasnt asked didnt mean i shouldnt tell. [applause and cheers] above all i was reminded time and time again how decisions made in white buildings in washington, dc are lifeanddeath for all of us. I joined americans with nothing in common except the flag on our shoulders as we learned to cut trust each other with our lives. When someone got into my vehicle, they didnt care whether i was registered as a democrat or republican, whether my father came to this country with papers or without, whether i was going home to a girlfriend or boyfriend. They just wanted to get home safe. All of us did. [applause and cheers] you know, american politics has already become much too much like a battlefield. But in this election in some ways we could embody more of the best of those we send abroad to defend us. Instead of refighting the last war, we can focus on the critical task ahead of us. [applause and cheers] narrow of indulging in selfinterest, we can summon the courage to embrace a common vision. [applause and cheers] and instead of being defined by eachifferences, we can see other first and foremost as fellow americans. [applause and cheers] that is the campaign we are building. That is the presidency we are offering and that is the choice before us in the days and weeks ahead. Because we know what we can do with the presidency. We know the purpose of the presidency is that the glorification of the president. It is the unification and empowerment of the American People. [applause and cheers] mayor buttigieg all right, i want to go off script little bit because you all waited so patiently. I have given my speech. You all waited so patiently and i want to make sure this isnt just a monologue that we have a bit of a conversation because i feel like we are making a bunch of new friends here tonight. [applause and cheers] how we can do this. We ask you for questions and we gathered them up and put them in our famous fishbowl. I would like you to welcome the moderator and guide to be your voice, welcome back to the stage reggie love, is going to help us do that. [applause and cheers] we love you, pete. [applause and cheers] mayor buttigieg first question. If it is your question, give a holler so i am looking in the right direction. Reggie how does the rise of populism fit in with democracy and how can it be used as a benefit to the country . Mayor buttigieg that is like an exam question. Though. Good one if that is yours, give a holler. Hey, all right. Cut both ways. On one hand we are in this moment that it feels so divisive and so chaotic and so toxic. That is what i worry about, that side of populism that is about arousing people to turn against others. We have had more than our share of that in these politics. There is something behind it which can be harnessed in the right direction. It is the fact the majority of the American People know politics as usual and the normal we have come to expect isnt getting the job done. We have got to do something different. I dont think we can argue. If everything was going along just fine, in our economy and political system, i would say a guy like donald trump would never have got within cheating distance in the first place. [applause and cheers] is itme what that means will be the job of leadership to harness a popular, maybe not populist, but certainly popular sense of Energy Things have to change. A little usedet to being in a defensive crouch in my party. The American People are pretty united on the things that have to happen. All of those things i am talking about, the need to raise with wages, the idea it makes no sense for corporation to pay zero in taxes, dealing with gun violence and climate change, these are american priorities. [applause and cheers] means, which means that in the right town, the process of gathering us together around those priorities could be one of unity, not of division. We can unify and energize the American People around those priorities. That is the difference between my campaign and the other approaches. We all share the ideals and the frustrations with the way things are working. But there is also an opportunity together together and to call into our side those who agree maybe dont agree 100 of the time but what we can do different. Those independents, future former republicans we welcome to our side. That is the potential of this moment. Great question. Reggie you got another good one. How would you change Mental Health . Mayor buttigieg such an important question. Before i get to the policies, i think the biggest thing we have got to change is how we talk about it. Lets [applause and cheers] i think it is always worth doing this exercise. If you or somebody you love or somebody work with has experienced serious Mental Illness or substance issue, if that has affected somebody in your family or workplace, lets have a quick show of hands. If you ever thought this was a specialty issue affecting a handfull of people, or you thought you were alone in being impacted, this is everybody. Why dont we talk about it the way we talk about other things . We have got to create a different kind of culture, starting at the top. This is what a president can help do that makes it as ok to talk about bipolar disorder as a hip surgery or fighting cancer. That is the culture that has got to change. [applause and cheers] that, all of the other stuff gets easier which is finding funding, making sure we compensate Mental Health professionals at the same rate, the teachers being expected to handle Mental Health issues with their students. In making sure those teachers have someone to refer students to come about is regime it is routine. It is ok to get an emotional checkup as a physical. We have got to put federal dollars behind that. It is part of what we have got to do and fund. Community led efforts backed by federal dollars. A lot of my should come from washington to get this done. Money should come from washington to get this done. Reggie we got time for one more. Mayor buttigieg im sure it will be a good one. Reggie i am a teacher. [applause and cheers] reggie my coworker had an injury and was concerned about going to the doctor because of the high copay. What is your plan to make Health Health care affordable for all people . Joe elliott. Mayor buttigieg first of all, thank you for being a teacher. [applause and cheers] mayor buttigieg i married a teacher, so i learned a lot about what to think. [applause and cheers] mayor buttigieg what you are describing shows why it is important a lot of people have insurance but the copays are so high on the deductibles that you are still in trouble and maybe hesitating to get the care you need. Or you have yearly caps. Im proposing what we it will be monthly. It will be for low income folks some other wont the any charge at all. It wont go above 250 on the prescription side. It has got to be monthly because have you ever had to wait until a certain month to get something done . It doesnt make sense medically. All why medicare for subsidizes for low income people it is free and no matter how much income you have the premiums are never more than 8. 5 of your income. That way everybody can afford coverage. [applause and cheers] it, i amay i see british are my plan in terms of copays and deductibles, it will be the best one out there. If i am right, everybody will pick it. Pretty soon it will be medicare for all. If i am wrong and some people have plans that are better, i will be glad we dont take them off. Lets have people figure it out on their own. I am counting on you to bottle up whatever sense of hope brought you into this room and i would argue you wouldnt be here if you didnt have a level of hope it matters for our everyday lives, that we get the right leadership in washington. Because of my experience in uniform seeing what fellow americans can do to trust each other without even knowing each other at first and learn how to get across the different political and other barriers. I feel that hope because i am not that removed from being a teenager in indiana wondering if he would ever fit in anywhere. And now i is standing in front am standingly i in front of you happily married, a two term mayor, seeking the presidency. Are you ready to spread that to everybody you know . Are you ready to come to this with joy in the process . Are you ready to make history in the selection and bring an end to the trump era in november .
