And i still remember the day when we lost the family station wagon. I remember how my mother used to tuck me in at night and kiss me and give me a big smile and i knew what was coming next, she closed the door and start to cry and never wanted to cry in front of me. I knew that. I learned words like mortgage and forecast. And one day i walked into my folks bedroom and laid out on the bed was the dress. Now some of you in this room will know this dress. It is the only one that comes out for weddings, funerals and graduations and there was my mother and had on her slip and in her stocking feet and pacing back and forth and she was saying, we will not lose this house. We will not lose this house. We will not lose this house. She was 50 years old. She had never worked outside the home. And she was terrified. Sees me sobbing and standing in the doorway and just a kid and looks at me and looks at that dress and looks back at me and walks over and pulls that dress on and puts on her high heels and walks to the sears where she gets a fulltime minimum wage job and saved our house and saved our family and the first lesson that my mother taught me and that is no matter how scared you are and no matter how hard it looks, you get out there and fight for the people you love. When i was a kid, the question asked in washington for setting the minimum wage is what does it take of a family of three to make it in americas middle class . What does it make to have something to build on . What does it take for a family to get a toehold and build something Going Forward . Today the question asked for setting the minimum wage is what will maximize the giant corporations. I want one that works for us families . Nd i got a plan for that in fact, i got a lot of plans for that. [cheers and applause] senator warren i want to tell you a little story. A little story about what it means to get in a fight. So, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, i was watching what was happening and i studied families going to go broke. And i saw people getting cheated on mortgages, that they had their own homes already and they needed to refinance their homes. And the banks were making more and more money. They started out by targeting communities of color, africanamerican homeowners and went after seniors and i started ringing alarm bells. We got a real problem over here. And heres what i discovered. Nobody what they wanted to hear. When your ears are stuffed with money, its hard to hear. The banks kept on selling those mortgages and the regulateors just looked the other way. The regulators were so deep, they couldnt even here what was going on and sure enough, the economy crashed in the 2008. E just loaded on that much debt. He banks got bailed out. Millions of families got left behind in detroit. Millions of people lost their jobs. Millions of people saw their Pension Funds shrunk. This pain was felt by families all across this country. I decided, we are going to make it through this crisis and there is going to be financial reform and going to vr protection to make sure that we never wreck this economy with a bunch of banks cheating people. [cheers and applause] senator warren i had this idea. Man, that sounds sexy. I had this idea and the basic idea is the same as the idea behind the safety we have Consumer Products safety commission. You cant sell a toaster in america that has a 15 chance burning down your house or shouldnt sell a mortgage that that has a 15 chance of could costing a family their home. So, thats the basic idea. Agency, ted an agent the banks will rework these things and will figure it out, but i wanted an agency to make sure they dont get cheated, mortgages, credit cards, payday loans, Student Loans and dont get cheated on financial products. So thats the basic idea. I go to washington. Im not in elected office. m a fulltime teacher and researcher. Lets here it important the in other words. The first is you dont get what you dont fight for. It has been a monumental failure for American Families . [cheers and applause] senator warren i had this idea. Man, that sounds sexy. I had this idea and the basic idea is the same as the idea behind the safety we have Consumer Products<\/a> safety commission. You cant sell a toaster in america that has a 15 chance burning down your house or shouldnt sell a mortgage that that has a 15 chance of could costing a family their home. So, thats the basic idea. Agency, ted an agent the banks will rework these things and will figure it out, but i wanted an agency to make sure they dont get cheated, mortgages, credit cards, payday loans, Student Loans<\/a> and dont get cheated on financial products. So thats the basic idea. I go to washington. Im not in elected office. m a fulltime teacher and researcher. Lets here it important the in other words. [cheers and applause] senator warren i go to washington and basically knock on doors. Democrat, republican, i dont care, im trying to pitch the idea. We are in a crisis and rewrite the laws and lets get this agency in it. Heres what happened. Basically, i started getting the same two answers from everybody. Nd first answer was, huh [laughter] laugh senator warren you could make a real difference. You could make a real difference. And the second half of the answer was, dont even try. You will be up against the banks and wall street and all of the republicans. And up against half of the democrats. You will never get it done. [laughter] cheers and applause] senator warren yeah. [laughter] cheers and applause] senator warren so i heard this and thought, i thought, i get it , big structural change is hard. But it is the right thing to do. [cheers and applause] senator warren we got in this fight and took on the big banks and they were spending a 1 million a day for nearly a year to fight this and the other financial reforms. We fought them all, but we built the coalitions and in 2010, barack obama signed that agency into law. Cheers and applause] senator warren and heres the thing. Heres the thing. That little agency, has now forced the banks to return more than 12 billion directly to people they competed. [cheers and applause] senator warren so, i take away two lessons from that. The first is you dont get what you dont fight for. I am in this fight cheers and applause] senator warren and the second and this is really important, after 40 years of Ronald Reagans<\/a> trickledown economics oh, i see you have heard it. It has been a monumental failure for American Families<\/a> . [cheers and applause] senator warren the second lesson that i learned about this agency as we built this agency is we can make government work for the people and thats what this agency has done. And being with you has been is about the fight and also about the hope and what we will be able to do together. Thats why i am here. I have known what i have wanted to be since second grade. Some of you in the back didnt know it was fourth or fifth grade. I have wanted to be a Public School<\/a> teacher. I had 46yearolds in special education and i loved this work. I probably would still be doing this work today but at the end of my first year in teaching i was visably pregnant ap the principal hired someone else for the job. And thats how i ended up going to law school and right back into teaching. Heres the thing. I truly believe if we are go to go build a future in america, roads and bridges are important. I get it. We need to produce a an infrastructure. But weve got to invest in the education of all of our children. Cheers and applause] senator warren it starts, its time for a wealth tax in america. [cheers and applause] senator warren yes. You already know. I want to make sure everybody is on the same page. 50 is a twocent tax on million. Your first 50 million free and clear. Reenable. Is not un two cents on every dollar. You have to pitch in a couple of pennies and everybody tracking on this, anybody who own a home . You guys have been paying a wealth tax and called a property tax and all im taxing and all for the billionaires and not only include the stock portfolio, the realm brant and the yacht . Thats the basic idea. Now you may have heard there are some billionaires who dont like his. Some came on tv and cried. And it was so sad. President. For [laughter] senator warren thought it would be cheaper than a wealth tax. I worked hard. I stayed up late and all of the time i had a great idea. You shouldnt punish me. You made a big fortune for you in america, good for you. Good for you. But heres the deal. I guarantee if you build a fortune in america you used workers who helped pay to educate. You built it at least in part getting your products on roads and bridges. You built at least in part protected by police and firefighters to pay the salaries. And were americans. We want to make these investments and opportunities. All were saying, when you make big, i mean really big, top 1 , has a 0 of chance to make it. Because now we get to your question. What can we do with two cents. I want to spapped how we think of Public Education<\/a> with two cents. We can provide universal child re and universal childhood education, universal prek for s and yearolds and four stop exploiting the people largely africanamerican women o do this work and raise the wages of every preschool teacher in america. And that starts the answer because that is equal funding. Go straight to our communities and come straight to detroit. But there is more. We can make an historic investment in Public Education<\/a>. Not two cents. Well do that for our babies plus. 00 billion investment in all of our Public School<\/a>s. Lets lift it up. And when you asked me about equalizing, that plan quadruples the title i schools. Thats how we level this out. And one more, youll hear this from the heart of a special education teacher. For the first time in history, e will fully yead so every child with a disability will get the education that child deserves. [cheers and applause] senator warren investing in our children is not just a local obligation, not just a state obligation, but the obligation of a nature that wants to build a future. [cheers and applause] turns out,ren so it at top 10 tf of 1 , we can also dor posthigh school education, two year college, four year college, tuition free. We can put 50 billion into our history canically plaque colleges and universities. And just one more thing, we can ancel Student Loan Debt<\/a> for million. Ok. Tchaup good. I love that question. We need a Strong Economy<\/a> and just doesnt work for five giant banks but an economy that puts us in a much stronger position to work around the world with the rest of the nations. The importance of allies. You know, i know this is going to be tough but we ought to know the difference between our friends and the people that do us harm and ought to treat our friends than the people who do us harm. When you think of what we are trying to accomplish internationally, we have to remember that will leadership happens by example. That is how we have enough money for infrastructure. The second part is what we were talking about. We have to be willing to pick up our regulatory tools and use them. On behalf of the people. Trickledown economics, we talked about a minute ago, inc. About it this way. , what has beenrd the principal, how does it work . It has helped the rich and powerful get more rich and more powerful. How do you do that . You cut taxes for those at the top. That is how they get richer. And you cut regulations. That is how to get more powerful. It is time for us in america to say trickledown economics has been a failure. Youre going to build this economy from the grassroots up your it and we are going to save our democracy.
