CSPAN NASA Holds News Conference On SpaceX Docking With International Space... July 12, 2024

Space center in houston. Today we will hear more from nasas leadership to tell us more about the mission in the last 24 hours. With us is nasas administrator, jse director, director of the Johnson Space center. The Program Director of the commercial crew program. Space stationnal Program Director, deputy Program Director. The nasa astronaut. Thank you for joining us. We will start with opening remarks, and then we will go to questions from reporters. First up is our nasa administrator. To say, just want congratulations to the nasa team and to the space x team, and congratulations to the United States of america. This has been an amazing two days. We are still at the beginning. We have a mission in front of us. We need to make sure we bring bob and doug home safely. When we think about watching american astronauts for the brandnew, on a rocket, this has been done four times in the history of the United States. Mercury, gemini, apollo, and now crew dragon. Now,actually five times and this has gone as well as we could have expected it to go. I want to say a big congratulations to nasa, big congratulations to space x, and we will continue to work day in and day out until bob and doug are home safely. Next we will hear from mark, the director of the Johnson Space center. Mark it is great to be here today, thank you for joining us. A tremendous day in Mission Control as we watched the dragon approach and then have bob and into the spacerd station. We have been launching with our russian partners for so many years. It was nice to see astronauts enter from the american side. Moment. Big we have a astronauts, Mission Control and we think of ourselves as the space craft experts for human space flights. It was great to see this mission executed. We look forward to a great continuation. Next we will hear from the deputy corrector of the crew program. Steve its an exciting day to be here for commercial crew. The launch was phenomenal. With the space station, many of us are been working on this for many, many years. I cannot tell you how many people across nasa, space x, and across the whole country put in hours, missing time with their families, hard work and dedication to make today happen. We are thrilled. The docking happened a little before 9 30 central time this morning. Hatches open at 12 02. What has been happening has been a series of rendezvous. Getting into this approach phase. Really well. We are learning a lot about the vehicle, how to manage it, watching the lifesupport systems over the 24 hours. Certainly different than the on crewed flight. The lifesupport systems are doing well. The crew got in the suits again today for the rendezvous timeline. That went well. Dragon is performing extremely well. Hours intoxt few tomorrow. Of crew is joined as part the space station crew. They will go to sleep around 4 30 this afternoon. Then they join the station. To see what we mean. It is kind of a hybrid mission. We will have some other objectives while we are docked to demonstrate other capabilities of dragon. It serves as a lifeboat. We will do other steps to verify all the dragon systems. We are excited to look at all the data. Great mission so far, but we have to continue to be vigilant and look at all the data while we are docked. Next we will hear from the iss Deputy Program manager. Ken it is great to be here. What an incredible 24 hours for human spaceflight. You dont have to be just american if you are just a fan of human spaceflight, and exploring, and going beyond the levels of what we understand to discover. You cannot help the be excited about what happened the last 24 hours. Was very cool. From the International Space station standpoint, we dont think it could have gone better this morning. The space and the station was a good, stable platform and the space x team delivered a beautiful spacecraft. We are happy to have it on board the space station. Andlly, as glad to have bob doug on board. Chris cassidy was lonely being the only person who is among the u. S. Having two friends up there, we will do our best to keep the three of them busy. The commercial crew program and the space x team, learning as much can about the dragon. And as others have stated, this is a test flight. Thes really important is next mission of the dragon, which is the crew one mission, which is set up to be a longduration flight. Wewant to learn as much as can, as quick as we can about this vehicle. And doug busy doing work on that dragon and on the space station. When the time is right, get them back home safely and start looking towards getting the crew one mission on board. We are looking forward to the next few weeks, couple of months. It is off to a great start. From thee will hear nasa astronaut. Thank you. What an incredible privilege to be a part of this phenomenal team, this space x partnership. And to be a part of this historic 24 hours. To see the vehicle dock with the International Space station. And happy for bob and doug for nasa and america. For the past year and a half i had the opportunity to train as a backup, to work with rob and doug and space x and nasa. It was cool to see all that training. The procedures, the simulations, they all culminate in an happening in real time. Incredibly excited to see bob and doug get to work as they do the space stations mission, then returned safely home. I know that my colleagues are incredibly excited. This mission represents the opportunity to launch from u. S. Soil in the future. We are excited about that mission, and excited to have the opportunity to find the future on this and our partner with the spacecraft. If you will like to ask a question, please press star one and you will be part of the queue. We will be getting as many questions as possible. We ask one question poor reporter to give all the media as many opportunity to ask questions. These direct your questions to the person you want to answer it. We will start with our first question. Congrats on a successful docking. You,this question is for left, the doug situation in the u. S. Escalated. You said this mission is meant to bring people together and unite america. Its clear a space mission, even one as historic as this when can do that. Not in 1969 and not in 1920. Do you think the message should change . How could we celebrate American Space x celebration while also recognizing what americans are going through at home . I will just speak from the heart. Think our country is going through some real challenges. That is true when you look at the unrest and you look at the coronavirus pandemic, times are tough. But we have been through tough times before. Even in those tough times, the United States of america has an amazing ability to accomplish astonishing and impressive achievements. Thats what this was. I will say that i think there is a moment in time yesterday when these two astronauts launched, when everybodys pods everybody paused. We thought about what the future could be and how much brighter it could be right now at this moment. Nasa has a history of doing these astonishing things in tough times. It requires leadership. To achieve it,le even in the coronavirus pandemic, we made sure we protected this mission. This was the highest priority for the United States of america. We were launching american astronauts on american rockets from american soil. Our objective was to get that done. E moved very quickly when the coronavirus pandemic broke out, we moved quickly to move to stage three and state for, make sure everybody was working from home. We protected the Mars Perseverance Mission. We named it perseverance intentionally because we need to persevere. The Mars Perseverance Mission will launch in july. These are very unifying things. Only talk about human Space Exploration, it has drawn bipartisan support. Only talk about Space Exploration in general, and the science and discovery that comes from it, which is what we will get from the Mars Perseverance Mission, these are unifying things. Republicans and democrats, and even internationally. We get support for these kind of activities. I do think that this was a moment in time for people to aboutt on what is great exploration. About what is great about the United States of america, and what we can achieve when we Work Together. Thank thank you, jim. Our next question comes from stephen clark. Thank you for taking my question. My question is for stitch. Looking forward, looking ahead over the next few weeks, i know well be looking at data on the solar rays to determine how long this mission can remain in orbit. Do you have any idea how long that might take . How long that assessment might occur . Whether its days or weeks as we monitor the solar array performance . And if i could also quickly, one of the differences between this spacecraft and the crew dragon on crew one, i know there are some differences. Can you describe those . Thank you. Sure, stephen. To address your first question, how long is the Mission Going to be, weve certified the systems on this dragon vehicle to be able to last about 120 days. So thats the capability and that is driven by the solar rays. They slowly degrade over time. Well start watching that over time. Well power up the spacecraft about once a week and get some data on those solar rays. It will take some data. Today, the dragon is extremely healthy. Theres really no major problems so it should be able to stay for a longer period of time. But not only are we looking at this particular vehicle, were looking ahead to crew one. As kenny said, thats an Important Mission for us. It has has full crew. Thats really what commercial crew is about. Its about doing these increment missions. Right now its being targeted toward being launch ready at the end of august, timeframe. So well just continue to look at this vehicle, if its performing well, the readiness. And in a month or so, we will be able to make a decision as to how long to keep this vehicle in orbit. The second question was whats different between this version of dragon and the crew one vehicle, which is the next dragon . They were very similar in terms of their systems, the life support. The crew one vehicle can land at little bit higher wind state. Spacex has changed some of the outer composite panels to make that a little stronger. It can land in higher winds. Pa. It can land in higher winds. It has the capability to dock not only in the ford port but they can they be go to the zenith port as well. Largely it is the same vehicles. Andan dock at either port better capability and i would characterize that as the big difference. Thank you. Our next question comes from stephen callan. Happy you can join us. Your question please. Ofi have been watching a lot tv with a lot of split screens. Nasa on one side and riots on the other end it reminds me of 1968 when i was a kid watching the apollo missions. Topsay that the coverage everything but these heat charge seemed to suggest the only interest you are seeing is from the states where the dragon was old and flown california, texas and florida. Can you provide more detailed stats to back up your claims . Convince angry and upset people who are out in the streets with their phones and wearing gas masks that two guys in a spaceship is more important than the problems that we have here back on earth, which is the line that was used in 1968. There doesnt seem to be a connection between what nasa is doing and this subset of the population who is looking for answers. I think what nasa does is astonishing and impressive. It does bring people together. Onthe expectation was things the ground were going to change because we launched a rocket, i think the expectation might have been a little high. Do you tell you have the numbers on how many people watched . We are still collecting the for may peak viewership 30 broadcast across all platforms was at least 10. 3 million concurrent viewers, the most watched event weve ever had. And think it is impressive i think a lot of people saw it. We are very proud of that and i want to make sure we can continue to congratulate the spacex team for doing amazing work even in the midst of tough times. Those numbers are only for nasa. That doesnt count other news agencies. Question, to our next marcia dutton. I wonder if you have heard ism elon musk and how he dealing with the good news today . Can you repeat your question . I think we missed the first part of the question. Could you please repeat the question . Yes. Im wondering if you have had a chance to touch base with elon musk since the docking and, if so, what he is saying about it . I have not, since the docking occurred a few hours ago, i have not had the opportunity to speak with elon musk, but that would be coming up in a few hours. Wholean say from the spacex team, ive talked to a lot of the leadership there. , hisission directors vehicle did outstanding in the first 24 hours of the mission. When you talk to the spacex employees, they are proud of what theyve done, they are excited to have this phase behind them. Otherthere are any questions we have gone through most of our questions. There have been so many great media events throughout the last couple of days. Weve been trying to give access to reporters. If anyone has questions, please press star one to be added to the queue. Meantime, we have got a lot of questions like what is happening with the astronauts. We heard them recently through the downlink. That or anyone joining us on the panel on what the astronauts are doing now and what is going to happen that they are part of the iss team . It was great to see them all together. I know chris was looking forward to having help, so theres a great video of them together. I think the key part is, as steve said, the vehicle is there, the crew is on board, that is the main thing. Lets make sure dragon and the mission is going well and kenny can speak to this. There are some options for bob and doug, some actions to help chris while they are there and that will be part of the assessment as well as making sure that we have a landing and, that we have a safe fairly straightforward landing plan for bob and doug and that is what the team will be fleshing out in the next few weeks. Talk a bit about the major objectives. We have a test plan for sometime next week. We will see how it works, operating in zero g is different than on the ground. Planned. Test there is a mode of dragon where you can go into it if the station were to have a problem temporarily. You can transition and stay as what we4 hours call a safe haven. We are going to test that out and do a test of some of the emergency systems so we have a few of those things planned over the next week to get some of our test objectives done. We can talk about some of the station planning over the next few weeks. We are starting to integrate the dragon crew vehicle, what kind of things we will helparn that them get a step closer to support the crew one mission needs. In addition to that, we have a couple of spacewalkers on who have an incredible amount of experience. Point blessed at this with a whole set of lithiumion batteries that just arrived, thats going to take an order of days. We are looking at all options that could allow us to do those evas while we have bob and doug on board and get those lithium ion batteries installed in their home. They are fine where they are at, but i do worry that this is fairly expensive hardware. Installedies that are , the last set of batteries that need to be installed, they are in good shape at this point but we have the new batteries up there. We will have to temporarily stow these batteries and it would be in our best interest to have those batteries installed and have that work behind us and not have these assets in these temporary Holding Patterns and that is something we will be looking at as we put the requirements together for what we need to do with commercial do with what we need to these batteries and other things on station. More than ahave single crewmember on board, we are in a better position when it comes to dealing with issues and failures that might come up. Thats part of the risk balance we have to strike in terms of looking at what we want to try trying toish versus get these guys safely home sooner rather than later and start working toward the crew one mission. Add from thest crew perspective that bob and doug are excited to be in lowearth orbit, successfully docked at the space station and at this point, they can breathe a sigh of relief. Launch is an incredibly dynamic phase of flight, having the opportunity to fly a spaceship in lowearth orbit away from the station and close to the station, to demonstrate that capability and have a successful docking and come through the hatch, at this point they can relax a little bit and enjoy being on the International Space to maybe have a meal with the crew that they desk that they just join. I know they are doing a safety brief right now and i recall doing that, meeting up with scott kelly and the crew members on board during my expedition and going through all the emergency equipment, being shown this is where the toilet is, this is where you are staying, this is where the food is, all of those important items. Ton having the opportunity get used to floating in space, being in that weightless environment. Bob and doug are veteran space flyers, so that adaptation will happen quickly. I know they are enjoying being in lowearth orbit and looking butard to the work ahead, kind of reflecting on this incredible experience these past 24 hours and team, nasa at spacex, their family and friends that helped get them up there. Thank you so much. You were talking earlier about what is next with the program. Anything to add to that . We have had a big agenda to commercialize low or lowearth orbit. We are launching american astronauts commercially. We need spacex to get customers that are not nasa. Weve seen evidence of that, which is a positive thing because it will drive down our cost in the long run. We need another commercial partner on board. Going is working toward that objective with nasa and i think we are going to have success there in the next year. Why we are doing private publicl partnerships. If the government is providing the demand for spaceflight and supplying the is supplies, we will be limited by budgets. They are whimsica
