Transcripts For CSPAN Democratic National Convention Day 4 - Pete Buttigieg 20240712

The promise of a place where everyone can belong. We know that for too many and too long, that promise has been denied. We also know america is at its best when we make that circle of belonging later. Wider. I joined a military where firing me because of who i am was not just possible, it was policy. In 2020, it is unlawful in america to fire someone because of who they are. The very ring on my finger, a wedding we celebrated here where i am standing reflects how this country can change. Love makes my marriage real. Political courage made it possible. Including that of joe biden who stepped out ahead even of this party when he said Marriage Equality should be the law of the land. There was a long way to go. If this much can change between 2010 and 2020, imagine what could change between now and 2030. Imagine what we could achieve, this coalition we are building this very season, gathering progressives and moderates, independents and even what i like to call future and former republicans, standing for an america where everyone belongs. Joe biden is right, this is a contest for the soul of the nation. To me, that contest is not between good americans and people americans, it is the struggle to call out what is good in every american. It is up to us. Will america be a place where faith is about healing and not exclusion . Can we become a country that lives up to the truth that black lives matter . Will we handle questions of science and medicine by turning to scientists and doctors . Will we see to it that no one who works fulltime can live in poverty . I trust joe biden and Kamala Harris to guide us toward that better future. Empathy andtheir capacity up close. Just as i have seen my fellow americanss capacity to support one another and include one another in new ways and do better by the promise of america. The day i was born, the idea of a candidate seeking any federal office at all was laughable. Earlier this year, i campaign for the presidency, often with my husband at my side, winning delegates to this very convention. Now i come to this convention anddly supporting Joe Biden Kamala harris, joining fellow democrats who are squaring off in competition just a few months ago. A number of us recently got together to talk about the joe that we know. Cory cory booker i am excited to present to you a group of people that ran in the 2020 democratic primary against joe biden. You can think of this sort of like survivor on the out interviews of everybody who got voted off the island. Bernie, dont you laugh, i have questions for you like why did my girlfriend like you more than she likes me . Because i am smarter than you, that is the obvious answer. Senator sanders and klobuchar, you actually served with joe biden in the senate. Im wondering if you have any memories of what he was like as a colleague in the senate . I remember one night when i was given one of those floor speeches giving one of those floor speeches. No one was watching. I was alone and i gave my speech to a complete empty chamber. I walked out of there and i said i wonder if i was if my mom was even watching this on cspan. At that moment, the cell phone rings and i thought my mom was watching on cspan. Do you know who it was . Joe biden. That goes to not only his kindest for calling me and being a mentor but it goes to how much he cares about our government and what people were saying. At home, at night, he is watching and he cares. Bernie we all want to know if your mother watched the speech. Dear remember when we were all going on . Hei was there the same time was. He pulled me aside at one point and he pointed to somebody we both knew who was working on my campaign but he had known from before and he let me know that that was somebody who had gone through a family tragedy. He thought it was important for me to know that about someone who was working with me. That ise i realized just basic degree is but that is just basic to who he is. But that stuck with me. Elizabeth the day that i saw joe the clearest was on one day bostonyear after the marathon bombing, everyone was honored to have the Vice President there but he shifted to the parent who had lost a child, to the man who had lost a life, to someone who had experienced loss very personally. Familiesto each of the from the heart. That is phenomenal. We will get you excited about this idea of the inclusion of big ideas from all over the party and to the future and the next administration. The magic of joe biden is everything he does becomes the new reasonable. If he comes with a plan to address climate change, all of everyone will follow his lead. He wants to build the best team but do it together. That is how we will rebuild this country. I am so optimistic about our country right now despite some very dark days for a lot of our fellow americans in large part because of what young people are doing right now. After the murder of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor and george floyd, young people by and large led these protests and did so in the best traditions of this country. The tradition of john lewis. My optimism and my faith in this country is reflected in those young people. And, joe and kamala are listening to that. This from aeing point of privilege that a lot of people dont have. There are people that live on the margins. Maybe it is not a life or death issue for you. This is clearly the most important election in the modern history of this country. Joe biden, you have a acumen ng who is empathetic man beinging a hu who is empathetic. That is something this country needs. All of us, whether you are progressive, moderate, conservative, we have to come together to defeat this president. I want to thank you all for joining for this segment. It was an honor to run against you. It was an even cspans washington journal. We are taking your calls live on the air and discussing policy. The Republican National convention with the Hills National reporter, al weaver. Also africanamerican voters with an Advisory Board member for black voices for trump. Watch washington journal live at 7 00 eastern monday morning and join the discussion with your phone calls, comments, texts and tweets. Democratiche national convention, a virtual rollcall was made across the United States to officially nominate joe biden as their president ial candidate. We will take a look at that rollcall next.
