Mr. Nadler madam speaker, i rise in strong support of h. Res. 908, a resolution condemning all forms of antiasian sentiment as covid19. Among other things, the resolution, introduced by my olleague from new york, representative grace meng, calls upon all Public Officials to antiasian denounce sentiment, and it calls on federal Law Enforcement officials to investigate and all credible reports of hate crimes against asian data on the collect rise of hate crimes incidents hold covid19 and to perpetrators accountable. The covid19 pandemic is an country. Risis for our over 6. 6 million americans have been infected, and almost from covid19. Ed lives of ected the almost every american for some ay and it will do so for some time as we brace for the infections. Second Asian Americans have been forced to carry the added anxiety of prejudice, racial including racially motivated harassment and violence stemming from a stigma thats unfairly associated them with covid19 virus origins in china, a stigma thats been reinforced by rhetoric a link. Ng such according to the Asian Pacific planning council, since march 19, there have been antiasian00 cases of discrimination related to covid19. Resolution, at the pandemics earliest stage in this country, between february 9 400march 7, there were over such incidents. These include the stabbings of asian mother father and father and two Young Children in texas. 6 and entities including the World Health Organization and the and rs for Disease Control prevention have recognized that geographic virus by terms stigma tazs certain stigmatizes certain communities. Health and Human Services alex azar rightly phrase d the use of the chinese virus in testimony before the ways and means quote, e stating that, ethnicity is not what causes the Novel Coronavirus, closed quote. Incumbent that all public figures, including elected officials like us, to publicly bigotry and the stigmat stigmatizaiton. Stigmatization. Ociety can be especially vulnerable to racist appeals. End this, sought to some appear not to share the moral duty. F bully han using their pulpits, they have used prejudiceal d phrases and remarks in the face national kriers. A tactic thats crisis. A tactic that has a long and country. Ory in our left uncheck, this type of in the left, led to the internment of japanese americans during the second war. In the year 2020, condemning scapegoating cial should not be hard for any member of this house to do. Leave thepast time to of yellhysteria behind. Must pass h. Res. 908 unanimously. I ask you to strongly support this resolution and i reserve the balance of my time. The speaker pro tempore the gentleman reserves. The gentleman from ohio is recognized. Mr. Jordan thank you, madam speaker. We oppose this legislation. One everyone knows racism is wrong but thats not what this legislation is about. To the gentleman from georgia, three minutes, to speak this. The speaker pro tempore the gentleman from georgia is for three minutes. Mr. Collins thank you, madam speaker. I appreciate the Ranking Member for yielding to me. Clear. E theres no denying where the virus originated, chinese. Communist party has tried to cover up their role, their friends in the World Health Organization to do their bidding. Is that aid, how democrats are still refusing to the wledge chinas role in coronavirus pandemic . Just recently, a chinese virologist acknowledged the was released from a hinese lab in wuhan and are we just to pretend it doesnt exist or even a possibility . It seems the route the democrats take is to pretend the ommunist china didnt play a role and trying to blame it on the president. Adam speaker, all forms of racism is abhorrent, including antiasian sentiment. Talking what we were about today that would be better. Thats not what were talking about today. Tone, even from the chairman, is disgusting how we deal with this in words. Floor over the past year and a half denouncing both rms of hatred on sides. Lets be honest, thats not what this bill is really about. This ill is exactly what entire congress has been about the entire time. Ignoring the real issues plaguing americans just for the opportunity to criticize President Trump. Despite their overwhelming undermine the Trump Administration through the hoax and llusion impeachment, the democratic playbook has not changed at all. Now a little over six weeks from election. Now, democrats are leaning on the global kriebl to continue heir admonitions all at the expense for families and businesses for relief. Democrats have taken no issue on ignoring the coronavirus effect on the ground in favor of president. The their collective offense of President Trump calling the vir the china virus or the wuhan virus. Will forget the administration shutting down travel. Applauding the move, democrats and joe biden accuse the Trump Administration and resident trump of fanning the flames of hate, fear, and zeepo phobia when his actual actions getting it and kept it from spreading because it was coming from china. Years, last three democrats claimed that russia must have something on donald trump. From a tion is, frankly president ial election, what does the Chinese Communist party have on joe biden . Would also love for the American People to forget that many viruses are named for theyre originated. He spanish flu, ebola, german measles. Maybe because the democrats seem to be so bankrupt on this bill solutions, bills and maybe the next two weeks well measles and g on respiratory syndromes because time. Wasting the peoples if you want to go work on it, go outside the capitol, not on the house. F the the virus begins and ends with the Chinese Communist party and to acknowledge the problem they have and to let it go. Refusing to acknowledge that fact is wrong and failing to it in the house in the favor of political messaging bills like this is nothing more political attempt to take down this president. And with that i yield back. The speaker pro tempore the gentlemans time has expired. The gentleman from new york is recognized. Mr. Nadler madam speaker, i now to the o minutes gentleman from rhode island, mr. Cicilline. The speaker pro tempore the entleman from rhode island is recognized. Mr. Cicilline i thank the gentleman for yielding. March, as er, last the covid19 pandemic first began to affect our daytoday we s, the f. B. I. Warned could soon see a rise in hate crimes committed against Asian Americans. This moment, President Trump could have tried to bring americans together. Chose. Not the path he instead, the president has point of order, a quorum is not present gasoline on the fire terms like kungflu and china virus. The white house has stoked into ournsions and fed nations worst xenophobic impulses. More than 2,100 hate crimes targeting Asian Americans. 10 asian three in americans said they have been subject to slurs or racist jokes ince the start of this pandemic. These slurs and jokes arent just words. They are actions designed to Asian Americans designed to feel less than equal and they have no place in this country. The reality of life in Donald Trumps america. This administration has tried to the clock on racial equality. This administration has and ned, belittles, ostracized nearly every minority community. Today, the house is saying no more. Stand by as this administration attacks innocent en, women, and children much asian dissent. I urge descent. I urge my colleagues to support this excellent resolution, and i yield back. The speaker pro tempore the gentleman from ohio is recognized. Mr. Jordan thank you, madam speaker. I yield three minutes to the gentleman from the great state of florida, mr. Posey. The speaker pro tempore the gentleman from florida is recognized. Mr. Posey thank you very much, madam speaker. I was hopeful this resolution would lead us to common ground. None of us here believes in discriminating against our fellow Asian American neighbors. On march 23, President Trump said, the Asian American community ought to be totally protected in light of the zone phobic attacks during the coronavirus xenophobic attacks during the coronavirus pandemic. Its very important we totally protect our Asian American community in the United States and all around the world, President Trump tweeted. They are amazing people antispreading of the virus is not their fault in any way, shape, or form, he said. They are working closely with us to get rid of it, the president added. E will prevail together. I have restaurantures in my district who suffered from bullies because of their heritage. I asked my staff to prepare a resolution to echo the president s sentiments. My staff reported to me that the resolution already existed. H. Res. 908. Ostensibly to protect Asian Americans. On april 7, i signed on to what i considered to be a good faith effort to protect Asian Americans. Im more than saddened to see this resolution and todays debate is being used for nothing more than to malign and vilify the president of the United States. Just as the president and Congressional Republicans have been called domestic enemies in the last couple of days. I hoped for more, but sadly this body has chosen to take the low road. This debate has deinvolved into finger pointing, namecalling, and scoring political points. Rather than reaching a High Water Mark for bringing us all together is further ripped apart the fabric of america. Im deeply disappointed and will not be a party to todays partisan exercise that is more about scoring political points than rebuilding america. We should be working together to help all americans recover to investigate covid19, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths around the world. Trillions lost, and trillions more spent responding to covid. Lives and dreams have been shattered. We have a duty to all americans to find a cure to get to the bottom of just how this pandemic started and do what we can to prevent it from happening ever again in the future. I yield back. Thank u the speaker pro tempore thank you. Thank you. The speaker pro tempore the gentleman from new york is recognized. Mr. Nadler i yield two minutes to the gentleman from illinois, mr. Krishnamoorthi. The speaker pro tempore the gentleman from ill joy is recognized. Mr. Krishnamoorthi madam speaker, today i rise in support of house res. 908, condemning all forms of antiasian sentiment related to covid19. Since this pandemic began, there have been thousands and thousands of reports of discrimination and xenophobic attacks against Asian Americans in the United States, including in my district, which has one of the highest conservations of Asian Americans in the country. As an Asian American myself, this is deeply personal and offensive to me. When people, including those in the white house, refer to covid19 as the chinese virus, or the kung flu, they encourage bigotry and discrimination against Asian Americans. To put it simply, promoting antiAsian American sentiment or antiasian sentiment as related to covid19 is unamerican. Which is why i am proud to cosponsor this resolution an encourage my colleagues to vote yes. Thank you. I yield back. The speaker pro tempore the gentleman from ohio is recognized. Mr. Jordan thank you, madam speaker. Again we all know racism is wrong. This is not what its about. Its another effort on the democrats to attack the president. The third whereas in the resolution, the gentleman from just spoke about this, the third whereas in the Resolution Says, you perpetuate antiasian bias if you use the terms chinese virus or wuhan virus. Well, someone should have told the media this. Cnn called it the wuhan virus. Msnbc called it the chinese coronavirus. Abc cbs called it chinas coronavirus. Cnbc called it the china coronavirus. Someone should have told the media you couldnt use these terms. Frankly, someone have told the democrats a few months ago that a few months later the mob cancel culture would say this is a term you cant use because the Democrats Use it on their committee notice. January 29, 2020, committee notice, House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on asia pacific and nonproliferation, congressman barrett, the chairman says, in the subject line of the hearing for the following week. Subject, the wuhan coronavirus. Someone should have told the democrats you cant use that term. But in the new woke world you cant state the truth. As mr. Collins pointed out, did the virus start in china . Yes. Did it start in wuhan china . Yes. Did china lie to the United States about the severity and origins of this virus . Yes. Did china lie to the world about the virus . Yes, they did. Did the World Health Organization lie to the United States . Yes, they did. Did the World Health Organization lie to the rest of the world . The answer to every single one of those questions is yes, but you cant say that. Not in the world, not in the politically correct cancel you cant state the truth. You cant state that the Chinese Government launched a Disinformation Campaign to coverup its role in exacerbating the spread of covid19. You cant say the coverup included punishing doctors, limiting the access of journalists, common senseoring the internet, and withholding information from the entire international community. You cant say that. You cant say a Government Official publicly and falsely claimed that the United States army brought it to wuhan. The Chinese Governments failure to institute a full scale public response and underrecording of deaths propelled the virus on the course its been on. You cant say all that. You could a few months ago. You could a few months ago. You cant today. Thats the cancel culture world. Thats how the mob operates today. Used to be able to say as mr. Collins pointed ow, the wes nile virus, zika virus, spanish flu, not today. Not today. Theyll attack you if you dont say the way they want you to say it. And this is dangerous. You cant say china virus today. Tomorrow who knows what it will be . Like i said a few months ago, even the Democrat Committee chairman used the very term in their resolution they are saying you cant use today. Somehow its antiasian, antiasian bias. I think its more to do with the fact we are seven weeks before an election. This is one more way to go after the president. We should all remember this is dangerous. When you start saying certain things cant be said. If you dont say it the way we, the politically correct, cancel culture mob wants you to say it, you have to be quiet. Silence is the biggest threat to the First Amendment. Thats what we are seeing. They want to just say this is this is broader. This is bigger. I would say look at the sports world. Look at the sports world. Drew brees says, you should stand for the national anthem. He gets attacked. Mike gundy, football coach at oklahoma state, goes fishing with his kids and wears what the mob says is the wrong tshirt. He almost loses his job. He wore a tshirt that had a conservative news outlet on the tshirt. Oh, my good nevments you cant coach football if you wear the wrong tshirt fishing with your kids according to the mob. You cant say a term today that a few months ago they you used on their committee notice. You cant say today because thats what the mob says. James harden says back the blue in the mask. He has to answer for that. Last week two High School Football players on 9 11 run on the field with a back to blue flag and flag supporting our firefighters and they get suspended because today the mob says thats not ok. We need to understand the cancel culture restricting, limiting, telling you what you can and cant say is so darn dangerous and it will never stop because the mob never it never quits. You dont believe me . Two weeks ago, two weeks ago the mayor of this city, our nations capital, has a proposal to remove and relocate the Washington Monument and jefferson memorial. This is how ridiculous, this is how ridiculous it gets. Maybe ill just finish with this. Maybe the most ridiculous thing is the last clause, the last page of their resolution. The last page says, recommit United States leadership in building more inclusive, diverse, and tolerant societies to combat misinformation. Think about this for a second. If you state the truth, the virus started in china, you are a bad guy. You are not allowed to state the truth. This Resolution Says thats misinformation. The very misinf
