Constitution . It mean then . [applause] [laughter] good afternoon. My name is victoria principe. I was born in venezuela and emigrated to florida at the age of 11 with my parents. My parents made a very difficult decision to leave venezuela when the situation began to deteriorate in our home country. My mother and father brought me and my Three Sisters to south florida in hopes of building a Better Future for us. My immigration story is one that so many here in miami are familiar with. We are a community of immigrants from all over. From cuba, to haiti, to nicaragua and in my case, venezuela. My parents had a successful and happy life in venezuela. But our life there was getting worse every day. Leaving was not easy. They left everything behind. And started from scratch here in south florida. Like many immigrant children, i remember seeing my parents at their most vulnerable, uncertain of whether or not they would be able to provide for me and my sister. Had to grow up earlier than other kids, helping out at home and doing what i could to help my parents adjust to life in america. An easy transition, but that is part of the reason why miami is so strong. Is because immigrants are tough, we are resilient, we persevere. Joe biden sees that. He knows that immigrants make america stronger. 2019, i finally became a citizen. I remember seeing my parents that day. Pride,e with emotion and after so many years, we were finally citizens of this country we call home. This country that we love. Citizen, ii became a registered to vote. And this november, i will be casting my first vote in a president ial general election for joe biden. [applause] joe shares of values that are important to our families. Empathy, humility, faith, and compassion. That is why i am so proud to be with you here today, to introduce the woman who has shown us that love can make a broken family home. She shows us that love makes us flexible and resilient. I know that love was what held my family together during our journey to america. And it is what will bring us together as a country. Miami, it is my privilege and honor to introduce the next first lady of the United States, a woman who will help unite us as americans, dr. Jill biden. [applause] jill biden thank you, victoria. Like so Many Americans, i am the granddaughter of immigrants. The values they brought here from italy shaped our family for generations. I know that experience and your heritage and your commitment to this country will shape your community for the better, as well. For yourtulations citizenship, victoria, and thank you for your support. [applause] and hello, miami. [cheering and applause] is great it is so great to be back in the city that we love. Especially to be here in little haiti, seeing some of our old friends and meeting new ones. How is everybody feeling today . Great . Good. Are you ready to get to work . Years,r these last few so many parents have told me endured moree questions and answers. What if i lose my job . What if a shooting occurs at my kids school . How do i tell my kids to be kind, when our leaders do not live up to that same standard . Enougharenthood hard without all this chaos . You know, motherhood came to me in a way that i never expected. Man, and love with a two little boys, standing in the wreckage of unthinkable loss. Mother, a wife and a daughter and sister. I never imagined that at the age of 26 years old, i would be asking myself, how do you make a broken family whole . Boys, joe always told the joe to us, and how could argue with her . So we figured out, in those moments that would go by too fast, thanksgiving, state football championships, birth and thengs mending ones that we did not even know were shaping our lives, reading stories, piled on the couch, rowdy arguments, liso think sounds of laughter of left or that would float downstairs, while i graded papers were studied for law school under the pale yellow kitchen lamp. The dinner dishes still waiting in the sink. We found that love holds a family together. Love makes us flexible and resilient. It allows us to become more than ourselves, together. And no, it cant protect us from the sorrows of life. It gives us refuge, a home. So how do you make a broken family whole . Make ae way that you nation home. And understanding, and with small acts of kindness, with bravery, and with unwavering faith. Ou reach out in big ways and small ones again and again. It is what so many of you are doing right now. For your loved ones, for complete strangers, for your ur cities. And that is especially true here, in the hispanic community. So many of you are on the front lines, or running the Small Businesses that keep our city strong. You remind us that the heart of this nation still beats with kindness and courage. Gods mom used to say that never gives us a cross to heavy to carry too heavy to carry. No one knows resilience like my husband. He has faced his share of tragedy. But grief can give you purpose, empathy that runs deep, resilience that cant be taken away, urgency to do everything you can in what little time we have. Gifts touts those work. He spent his entire career listening and bringing people together. He will be a president for all of us. [applause] he has a plan for all of us, to end this pandemic, to rebuild, to reimagine a future that is better than ever. But he cant do it without you, miami, because this is our moment. There are no doovers. There is no time to sit by and watch what happens. We have to decide what happens. So, will you join us . Will you help is show that our nation will never settle for less than our highest aspirations . Will you stand with the joe biden and Kamala Harris, because when you do, we know we will win . [applause] now, i have to leave a little early, because i am going to talk to my friends, el gordo y la flaca. To aski do come i want you for a commitment i want you all to make me a promise. If you have not registered to four, do it now. To vote, do it now. The deadline is today. To voteeed everyone early. Finally, i want to say thank you. Thank you for all you do for your communities. Thank you for showing up now, when it matters most. And thank you for your state, and an idea that is bigger than any one of us, and that is that we will build a better nation, because we will do this together. Thank you, and congratulations, victoria. [applause] welcome to the stage [indiscernible] good afternoon. My name is esther. I moved to miami when i was nine. I am a mom, with two teenage daughters would love more than anything. I am proud to serve this community. I chose to become a nurse, because my grandmother was a nurse in cuba. Before she came to this country for a better life. Like my grandmother, i love what i do. I love helping people. It is in my blood. I spent eight years serving my country in the u. S. Army reserves as an operating room technician. After my time in the military, i attended Nursing School here in miami. I have been serving our community for 27 years. And love my job. One covid19 hit, it hit miami hard. Miami became an epicenter of this virus, and it was difficult for our patients, but it was also difficult for my fellow Health Care Workers and my colleagues. It didnt have to be this bad. Im supporting joe for president , because he has a plan, and he is going to be beat covid19. I know joe is fighting to protect the Affordable Care act, and make sure health care is a right for everyone. I know joe will look out for Health Care Workers, who on the front lines of this pandemic. Ofwho are on the front lines this pandemic. I am supporting joe, because i know he will be a president for working people. Working people made this country and deserve to have a seat at the table. That is why i joined my union. Joe will bring us together as a country and united, we can build back this country better than its ever been. I love miami, we are a city of immigrants. Working people with many different cultures. We need a president who embraces that and will fight for us. Miami, it is my honor to introduce our next president , a man who will always have our back, joe biden. [applause] [cheering and applause] joe biden good afternoon, everyone. Its great to be back in miami. And thank you, esther. Beend you, our family has [indiscernible] please, ill sit down. All sit down. I learned from personal experience, as my sons, my daughter, my wife, my family have learned, if there are any angels in heaven, they are nurses, male and female. Nurses make you want to live. I really mean it. They are there through tough times. By the way, thank you for your service in the military, but , at theank you for beginning of this pandemic, being a surgical nurse. It was not easy when there was no ppe available to all of you. You walked into those operating rooms and dealt with all the problems. I know my son is a physician, my soninlaw is a physician, surgeon in philadelphia. Beginning oft the this process, when we should have had everything available. Thank you not only for your skill and your courage, but your bravery and doing what you have done. I want to thank you for the care and dedication that you and all fellow members, nurses who show up and struggle with illness, coping with the loss of a loved one in terrible times. Hold a of you had to phone to a patients here to say ear to say goodbye to a family member, because they could not be there at the hospital as they passed. I want to thank victoria. Familys journey with us today. Victoria and i were talking a little bit earlier. Asia speaking with a president. He asked me, what makes america unique . Itaid immigration, because is the history of this country. He looked at me funny. Why is that . Everybodycause almost who has come here, other than , camewho came and changed because they are escaping something, and it took enormous courage, i really mean this, enormous courage to leave everything they knew, everything that was familiar. Sometimes, family members. Train,d a plane or whatever the main ones, to start a new life. To haveat, he had optimism, courage, you have to be resilient. You have to be willing to believe you can make things change for the better. What built this country. Immigration. A are not figuratively, nation of immigrants. That is why we are the most unique and strongest nation in the world. Families like yours and esthers have made this country what it is, through the hard work, faith, and perseverance. The beauty of miami is built from the connections of families, cultures, values to be shared with our friends throughout the caribbean and latin america. Earlier this afternoon, i visited little haiti. Its been some years since i had been there, when the earthquake occurred, and i came to deliver some assistance to the Haitian Community as well as making sure we had temporary detective status granted. The cultural context. Herelebrated poets. The city is living proof of the incredible strength we draw from families and communities from jews in america. Thank you, victoria, for choosing us. And i am honored that you are going to vote for me in your first election. I will not let you down i promise i will not let you down. [applause] my prayers continue for the president and the first lady for their health and safety. Like so Many American families dealing with covid19, i was glad to see the president speaking and recording videos over the weekend. Now than he is busy tweeting campaign messages, i would ask him to do this, listen to the masks, supportt a mask mandate nationwide, require masks and every Federal Building and facility and interstate travel. Urge every governor in america to do the same. We know it saves lives. Is rejected ation mask mandate for Public Transportation on friday. The cia came along and said, we need to be protected. They said no. I believe that was wrong and not very rational. Experts say that universal , between now save and january, 100,000 lives. Let me say that again, between now and january, a mandatory mask mandate would save 100,000 lives. I backed that mandate months ago. He should back it now. Since the president entered the hospital on friday, more than people since friday, have been diagnosed with covid. This week, at least 5000 more will die. Cases are climbing in many states. I hope the president s recovery is swift and successful, but our nations covid crisis is far from over. Today, my prayers are with the families of the 210,000 americans who died from the virus. Getting upamilies this morning, theres an md chair the breakfast table. Tonight, and an teacher at the dinner table an empty chair at the dinner table. And an teacher at the breakfast table. Nearly 7. 5 million americans. Empty chair at the breakfast table. 7. 5 million americans have been affected today. Nationally, the infection rate among hispanics is almost three white, igher than nonhispanic. More than 40,000 hispanics have died from covid19, devastating families in closeknit communities and loved ones. Here in florida, where hispanics make up one quarter of the population, they make up 37 of the covid deaths. Nearly 3 million hispanics are unemployed. Thebreak that down, unemployment for Hispanic Women and hispanic youth went up last month. Hispanic Business Owners have taken a hit. Many will have to close permanently. Some economists are calling this a caseshaped recovery k shaped recovery. It means those at the top, their income goes up, but those in the lower and middleincome, it keeps going down, keeps getting worse. It means that essential workers, so many whom are hispanic, who have sacrificed to keep us going through this pandemic, are being left behind by the most unequal recovery in modern american history. Because while workers are struggling, this is a shocking statistic, but its true. The top 100 billionaires in , just since the covid crisis, they have made an additional 300 billion. Additional made an 300 billion. For everyone else, make up the bottom half of the k, downward, the downward slide. Out how you figure are going to pay your bills, put food on the table, pay the rent. Or if you are lucky enough to own a home, the mortgage. How to balance doing your job with being a teacher to your kids, because their school has gone remote. Work from home, or risk covid. Because you are one of our first responders, or a nurse, like esther, or on an assembly line, or working in a Customer Service or tourism industry, or at a checkout counter, or a police officer, firefighter. Not an easy time, but i also think this pandemic has helped us rip off the blinders of this so many things are. People didnt even realize until now theyve seen it. I truly believe we have a tremendous opportunity to turn this moment of crisis into a moment of great progress for the country. Thats why ive laid out a comprehensive agenda not just to rebuild our communities but to build them back, make bold investments in them so we can build back better than before the crisis. An independent analysis the president loves talking about wall street. He never talks about moodys on wall street that pointed out they did a detailed assessment of my economic plan and his and heres what moodys concluded. They projected my economic plan will will create 18. 6 million jobs. Seven million more jobs than the president s economic plan will in four years and 1 trillion more in groupt nab the president s plan, and heres how it works. Im not going to raise taxes on anyone who makes less than 400,000 a year. You wont pay a penny more, i guarantee you. I will ask the big corporations and super wealthy to begin to pay their fair share. Its not punishment. Its just that its about time you start paying your fair share. The money we raise for making sure they pay their fair share will allow me to invest it in working people and a growing middle class. I said i wanted to rebuild the backbone of this country. The working folks, the middle class. They werent built by wall street, it was built by labor. Advance labor y across the economy to make sure everyone is involved this time. Invest in creating millions of goodpaying jocks, union jobs in manufacturing and technology, making sure our future is made in america. And in intrastructure, building roads, highways, airports like i was able to do when i ran the recovery act for our administration. Pouring millions of dollars into the port of miami. Putting so many good, working people in good, decent union jocks. Able to accommodate the new super tankers coming through the canal. My plan will make sure hispanic communities benefit from hundreds of millions of dollars in investments to fitch the cracks in the sidewalks, install brommed band, close the digital divide, create places to work and play and safely and create energy. We upgrade 4 million buildings. Weatherize two million homes. The estimates are at least one impact goodpaying jobs and save us millions and millions in barrels of oil. Were going to invest in strengthening climate resilience. Where weve already dealing with the exist stenrble threat of climate change. I dont have to tell you in miami or south florida or in my state, which has the lowest degree of from sea level than any state in the nation. Stronger, more frequent hurricanes. Rising tides, flooding and no matter what the president says, maybe you should consider dropping an awe atomic well on a hurricane coming our way, its not a good idea. It doesnt work. Thats not some zanlts future in miami or south florida. Youre dealing with it right now. What do you have to do, get knocked in the head to understand it . Were going to make sure the Small Businesses come out the other side of this. My ideas will get 15 impact throwing to Small Businesses, especially minorityowned Small Businesses and make another 100 million available in lowinterest loans to make help hose those businesses get back on their feet and stay alive. Because you know as well as i do in ethnic communities, theyre the heart the center of the community. Whether its the grocery store, the beauty shop, the hardware store. The investment into a community. Its long pastime ive worked with Governor Cuomo to get it done in new york and other governors across the country. No one should have to work two jobs to be able to be 40 hours a week so theyre above the poverty rate. 15 should be a minimum wage in the United States of america, period, and for our workers, were not just going to phrase you, were going to begin to pay awe good wage and be sure up strong befores. Were going to ease the burden of the major costs in your life and what are they . Health care. Were going to build on the
