CSPAN Campaign 2020 Joe Biden Makes Campaign Stop In Chester PA July 12, 2024

[cheering and applause] hey buddy, how are you . [indiscernible conversations] in addition to that, i dont speak spanish. Cheered. [indiscernible conversations] [cheering] welcome to delaware. Mr. Biden ill tell you what, man. You guys have done one heck of a job. Its incredible. The numbers they gave me are almost hard to believe. You guys are knocking on 250,000 doors, so far. And that youve gotten more volunteers, more people engaged. I mean, hows the feel out there . It feels great. Mr. Biden for real. Ill tell you what. You are doing more than your civic duty. Here. S a lot at stake the congresswoman knows that. By the way, she gave me a passport to come into the district. [laughter] i spoke to the congresswoman before i came in. By the way, we made it finally. We appreciate you. Mr. Biden ill tell you what, man. Look, i will say a few things for the press in a little bit. But the fact of the matter is, this president s chief of staff, he just acknowledged they have given up. You know, all these super spreaders going on. I wish i could shake each one of your hands and thank you personally, but ill tell you what. As my grandfather said, [indiscernible] maybe we can get together in washington at some point. As long as you are in charge. Mr. Biden ill tell you what, i feel good. Its not over until its over. Youve got to run through the tape. I am kind of superstitious about predicting anything. Its not over until the whistle blows. [indiscernible] im heading to georgia tomorrow. Then we head to wisconsin and iowa. We are making the rounds. It just feels good. Is there anything you want to say, boss . We are so happy to have you here. We know we need you in the white house and we cant wait for that to happen. [indiscernible] mr. Biden when i went to ireland, i kept saying to the president , every time the Prime Minister would come, i would have him at my home for breakfast and we would go and sit in the president s office. Finally one day, they said, why dont you let joe come to ireland . And they said it is a land of 100,000 welcomes. I cannot pronounce it. I had to go back on business and we went back and spent five days going through ireland and they did a whole genealogy of my family. It had never been done. I dont want to hurt her reputation, but i think we are related. [laughter] there are scanlons in our family. I dont know where your family hails from. A little further north. Watertown, new york. Mr. Biden i know watertown well. Watertown is a place where when i was in law school, they had 61 inches of snow. Watertown had 102 inches of snow. Can you believe it . Anything you want to ask me . Do you need a ride back to wilmington . [laughter] mr. Biden is that where youre from . Whats your name . Becky. Mr. Biden how are you . Im fine. Mr. Biden where in wilmington . Im from north wilmington. [indiscernible] mr. Biden mayfield. Yes, i was putting up signs out there. Mr. Biden all right. How about you, what is your name . Sophia. Mr. Biden how old are you . 18. Mr. Biden well, thank you for helping. That is really nice of you. Whats your name . My name is tristan. Im from philly. Mr. Biden we really got it going. I tell you what, if you have any questions [indiscernible] here is one ive got. Whenever trump comes out and says h1n1. [indiscernible] mr. Biden ebola, no pandemic. With h1n1, it was [indiscernible] 15,000 people. No panic, no any of that. But, you know, we did it but i just want you to know that it was barack i know you saw him in philly, but hes a good friend. But the point is, the Infectious Disease experts said look, this is what will happen as we move forward. There are a lot more Communicable Diseases transmitted that walls cannot stop, you cannot build a wall high enough. And pandemics are going to be caused. So we set up an office in the president s office, in the white house, a pandemic office. And we hired people, we put people around the world, experts from the cdc and other agencies of the federal government. We would put them in other countries so you would see it coming. We had 44 people in china. In china. And to the best of our knowledge, trump never asked them to go into wuhan to figure out how bad the situation was. They all came home. And remember, he was praising the president of china, xi. Saying we owe him a great debt of gratitude and hes been so transparent. From the beginning, it is clear. And they wiped out the office. We will beat covid, but youve got to be prepared to deal with future pandemics. Its not enough to just beat it in the United States. You have to go beyond that. We can do that. People are trying to make an issue of Court Packing. Can you point out that the republicans have already packed the lower courts and are already doing that . They packed the supreme court. [indiscernible] mr. Biden i think the press is asking legitimate questions. What im going to do, because of your hard work, if i am elected, we will set up a commission. Constitutional scholars, liberal conservative scholars, and mainstream scholars. Put that commission together and have them do an analysis of what, if any, changes should take place and how the court functions. How long to stay in courts, if there is an idea put forward there was an idea put forward saying that [indiscernible] there are all kinds of things. Here is what i think we have to do. Im not a big fan of Court Packing or saying that we are going to add x number. But i will listen. Listen to all the ideas because it has become a serious question going into the middle of the 21st century. A lot of scholars are considering alternatives to how we proceed. And i asked them to report back to me assuming i am elected in 180 days, and we will decide if we are doing anything. Heres the thing no more questions, you are a pain in the neck. This guy. [laughter] but here is the deal. One thing that is important [cheering and applause] how are you . Thanks for letting me be here. I want to thank you very much. Look, yesterday, the white house chief of staff mark meadows went on television to admit to the country that the administration wasnt even trying anymore to deal with the pandemic. He said, and i quote, we are not going to control the pandemic. The Washington Post headline today says white house gives up on trying to slow virus spread. No caveats. Just a deadly admission. Earlier in this pandemic, trump called himself a wartime president. Fighting a war against an invisible enemy. Ive been saying for months, as you well know, that he waved the white flag all the way back then. He wasnt doing much at all. Some people said i was being harsh or unfair. The white house is coming out right now and admitting what i said months ago was absolutely true. Look at how many people are dead. 220,000. It is expected as many as another 200,000 could die between now and the end of the year. And he said, we are not going to control it. Not going to control it. The bottom line is, donald trump is the worst possible president , the worst possible person to try to lead us through this pandemic. He either doesnt have any idea what to do or he just doesnt care. On friday, dr. Fauci, the nations most respected Infectious Disease expert, publicly acknowledged that the president has not met with his covid team for months. For months. Even worse, saturday, donald trump said the covid19 count wasnt really going up. Everything was leveling out. He suggested the doctors were inflating the numbers, catch this, because doctors get more money. What the hell is the matter with this man . Doctors and nurses have given their lives trying to save lives. And he says the reason they are talking about testing is that they want to make more money. Mr. President , more than 1000 healthcare workers lost their lives fighting covid. Doctors, nurses. They are not profiting. They are dying. You remember, during the debate if you want to call it that, during the debate, trump said that we are learning to live with this covid. No, hes asking us to learn to die with it. Folks, this has got to end. We can, in fact, end this crisis. If he would only get together with the house and senate and work out a compromise on the spending bills out there. So that we could safely open schools. It will cost 200 billion to do it. But it is worth doing it. We should do it. We can lower class sizes, more teachers, ventilation, ppe, masks, gloves, sanitation. All the businesses to be able to open if we provided the help we said we would do. There is so much more to do. Testing and tracing. We should be pouring billions of dollars into determining how we get Rapid Testing so that you know within hours whether or not you have tested negative or positive. Many places you have to wait, sometimes up to six days or seven days. He is not doing what needs to be done. Seven days. And look, folks. I promise you this. Im not going to give up. You know, mr. President , you have to have a little bit of shame. Just a little bit of shame. Because people are dying. Here is the point i want to make and let me say it clearly more people are going to die. As many as 200,000 is suggested by some. But as pointed out, if we just wore a mask and kept social distancing and got tested, we can save between now and the end of the year over 100,000 american lives. We are not going to give up. I dont know what we will inherit january 21, but at the rate hes going, its not going to be good. But we are going to make it. By the way, i am happy to take some questions from the press. But let me make it clear, im not shutting down oil fields and i am not eliminating fracking. Im investing in clean energy and we will make sure that we dont continue to subsidize oil companies. They get somewhere between 25 billion and 40 billion in subsidies. That money should go to doing a lot of other good things. You have a relatively light public schedule the past few days. Can you give us a sense of how come of how much you will be traveling the next few days . Mr. Biden i traveled the last few days, too. Ive told you where i will be traveling. I will be going to iowa, wisconsin, georgia, florida, and maybe other places as well. Theres a lot weve been doing as well in terms of being online and everything from Fundraising Efforts to making sure i met today with a group of leaders in the Democratic Party laying out where we will go. Getting their input and the like. We are constantly there has not been a day that hasnt been a 12 hour day yet. [indiscernible] mr. Biden look, you know me. I am not overconfident about anything. I just want to make sure we can earn every vote possible. That is why we are here. And you know that blue wall has to be reestablished. By the grace of god and the goodwill of neighbors, i will win pennsylvania. It is a great deal to me personally as well as politically. I think we will win michigan. I think we will win wisconsin. I think we will win minnesota. I think we have a fighting chance in ohio, in north carolina, georgia, iowa. Because of over 6 million individual voters, the average contribution of 49, we are able to compete like we havent been able to before in these different states. We will continue to travel. The big difference between us and the reason why it looks like we are not traveling is we are not putting on super spreaders. We are doing what we are doing here. Everybody is wearing a mask and trying as best we can to be socially distant. Thats wait that is what we do and you attended our press conference as well. It is important to be responsible. You mentioned that as part of your commission, you will look at how long justices serve on the court. Are you open to term limits . Mr. Biden no, no, no. There is a question about whether or not it is a lifetime appointment and im not going to attempt to change that at all. There is some literature about the possibility of going from one court to another court, not just staying the whole time on the supreme court. But i have made no judgment. My word. I have made no judgment. It is just a group of serious scholars that have a number of ideas how we should proceed from this point on. We will give them 180 days, god willing, if i am elected, to be able to make such a recommendation. Do you have reaction to President Trump planning an outdoor event at the white house tonight . [bell ringing] mr. Biden look, you know, if you have children, all parents are taught that the example you set impacts on how your kid reacts. When you are the boss of an operation, the example you set matters to the rest of the company. The words of the president and the actions of the president matter. They matter a great deal. And when the president of the United States puts on these super spreader events, you saw what happened when she was announced. All the people, including his family, thank god they seem to be ok. All the people that came down with covid. I just hope that he is willing to learn a lesson and there will be significant social distancing. I dont blame him for celebrating. There are lots of things we could be doing. But the fact is it is just not appropriate now. I hope he and the Vice President and others act with some dispatch and do what everybody knows. People should be tested first before they even show up. Number one. Number two, they should be wearing masks. Number three, they should be socially distanced. Number four, it should not be a huge crowd, whether it is outside or not. Thank you all very much. [applause] we are going to load. [indiscernible conversations] i need you [cheering and applause] [bell continues tolling] [applause] [indiscernible conversations] [cheering and applause] with eight days left until election day on november 3, when Voters Decide who will control congress and occupy the white house next year, stay with cspan.
