The International Space station for about six months. Nasa tv coverage. Headset are six key positions were monitoring the health of the vehicle and crew. The mission director, responsible for success, is in charge of the room. The person you here talking is the crew operations and resources engineer. Open. Con 19, this is the other positions are focused on things like navigation and control of the propulsion, tware, lifesupport systems and communications with ground segments. Nasa has its own team members in Mission Control, houston, where they have been preparing for crew dragon crew dragon arrival. For now, lets go to john for an Operational Update on the launch countdown. Hello from spacex headquarters in hawthorne, california. On the falcon principal integration engineer. We are just over four hours to launch it its a major event, getting to this point. The falcon nine for the dragon capsule on top and it has remained vertical on path 309a falcon static fired the nine we used the same caps off procedure that we are using today. The engines were fired for 30 seconds and we did not allow the flight computer to command lift off. Following static fire, we did perform a final dresser her soul with the crew. Dress rehearsal with the crew. We loaded the time sensitive items, what we call the late load cargo, on the dragon late saturday. , the lunchpad 39 a team will perform final checks in t minus two hours. The dragon team has been prep pressurizing their propulsion systems. Asked her a weather briefing, condition the astronauts received a weather briefing. Weather protects a 50 chance of rain on the flight path, thick clouds possibly, static electricity might be an issue. But they sound a little optimistic that the weather we have seen come towards us may not make it and will stay away long enough for the launch today. Also, around the world, splashdown locations for the contingency argo. In the event of an all andomenal scenario, spacex nasa are ensuring crew safety on splashdown. This includes includes extra ships. This will help mitigate safety for any boaters approaching the landing area. We have been instantaneous launch window, that means we cannot move the watch time. We have to go at the planned minute. If we need to delay there is a launch opportunity on wednesday. With everything going at pad 39 , lets go to houston. Welcome to the International Space station control room in houston, texas. Mission control houston is the nerve center for operating the International Space station, working with our Partner Agencies and providers around the globe. We have ensured that the station is ready to welcome crew one. We have the team inside the room with the director. There is a noticeably smaller team inside the room. The crew is currently asleep. Tomorrow we will see a larger group for docking. A few hours before dragon arrives at station, the flight director will take the chair again through dragons approach and docking. Pools, lead the gono go where the integrated operations are with Mission Control here in houston and also in hawthorne, working in sync to bring crew dragon home. Later i will go through the work you have been doing we have been doing to prepare. Until then, we will keep an eye on the countdown to launch and check back in with you soon. Lets go back to Kennedy Space center. Thank you. The astronauts will begin suiting up in just a few minutes. One of the traditions they continued is designing the patch for their mission. This marks the beginning of sustained government commercial partnership missions. And this spacecraft is the focus of the patch. The spacecraft is flying from the bottom left to the top right, rep romantic representing assent. And superimposed on the background of stars completing the outline of a dragons head. The c borders the patch which with the number one represents the mission, shadows the legacy of the human spaceflight programs around the border. Thats a shuttle, apollo, mercury, and gemini, recognizing their contribution to the crew. The outline of the space station is also on the border to acknowledge their destination and its contribution to remaining a lowearth orbit for the u. S. And international partners. You may notice there are no individual names were flags. The patch on his not just the flu member the crew members on board but all of the nasa and spacex employees who Work Together to make this spacecraft. Vision,h honors their service, and support. They dedicate this to their families. I have to tell you, when i saw it, it made me smile because of the blue dragon. One of the traditions we have within the Astronaut Office, in addition to designing the patches for mission is that the class before you gets to name you. When shannons class came on, our class, the bags, class of 2000, got to name class of 2004. They originally wanted to and in themselves. They wanted to name themselves the blue dragons. We denied that, they are the peacocks. But i thought that was funny, no coincidence that shannon is on this mission and theres a beautiful blue dragon. At t minus four hours, we are just inside that, any moment we expect to see the roots begin to suit up just down the road from us. We will have a live look inside the suit up room as they begin to help astronauts put on spacesuits and perform key checkups. The current scheduled wake up time was 11 47. Theyre are probably up a little earlier but that was their scheduled wake up time to adjust their sleep schedule in preparation for launch. They had lunch at 12 15. I got a text message with what they all ate. Mike hopkins had a new york state, medium rare with seasoned fries and dirty rice. Shannon had a juicy medium hamburger with no soggy bun, brioche bun, sweet potato fries and arugula salad. Soichi had and victor had lamb chop medium with sweet potato mash, the same salad but no dressing. I wonder if they had to preorder. You can get premuch whatever you want. Forou are so well taken taking care of us. You are so well taken care of and i think food is at the top of the list. My mouth was watering thinking about all that. Besides lunch, they did some other thing this morning. They had the routine daily medical check, flight day preparations including reviewing the procedures on their tablets before suiting up one final time. They listened to a weather briefing 15 minutes ago. Any minute now we expect a live view inside of the suit up with an instantaneous window. The crew is starting preparation. Checkouts are complete. We are not tracking any issues at this time. In the event of a scrub, the next available launch time will be wednesday, november 18. Open in the event of any crew emergency. 45o into lockdown at t minutes. To personnel are requested stay in their location until lockdown is complete. Healthy and good to go. Copy. Any comments . Successful security test overnight. Any issues. Racking were expecting to have a live view inside the suit up room momentarily. Sound like theres noshes with falcon 9. The primary concern is weather. The down range weather actually looks pretty good. Were going to keep an eye on weather around the pad. Heres our first live look inside the suit up room. Well, it is so exciting to see this. All four of them. Yeah, theres a look at commander, mike hopkins. Kate, walk us through what are they doing in these seats and theyre getting check outs and making sure the fit is good. Walk us through what is happening . Each astronaut has an assigned Crew Team Member to make sure they are part our suitup eteam. That assigned crew member is responsible for communicating any feedback, making sure were getting thumbs up and everything is fitting well and is comfortable. These suit techs, theyre all assigned to each astronaut. Its to make sure each astronaut is undergoing the same checkout list. Theyre doing this would have happened before the suits came on. Those suitup technicians were doing maybe things that we might consider small in detail. They were checking to make sure that the astronauts they didnt have any jewelry, rings, earrings. Only thing theyre allow to wear is the nasa provided watch. Making sure those smaller things are off before the suit gets put on. We can see shannon in the seat now. Tell us about the seats theyre sitting in. Theyre not like the recliner. Theres a special reason for these chairs. Yes. These chairs, these are basically gsc, Ground Support equipment chairs that are pretty identical to the chairs they will be sitting inside of the cacapsule. The reason were suiting them up there, to make sure the umbilical that connects directly to the seat. They communicate they allow the astronauts to communicate and they provide environmental systems. Make sure our friends are nice and comfortable during their ride. We are pumping cool air through the suit. They are sitting in these chairs that are duplications of the chairs inside of the capsule to make sure that all of the umbilicals will get hooked up properly. The recliners nicole is fond of, they are in the room. You might be able to see them in the background in some of the shots. Essentially these chairs allow us to make the essential checkouts prior to econom exit exiting. Nicole you did this twice before. It really does. I dont know, im kind of feeling some level of excitement that they might be at this point. Its nice to see all four of them in there and snug in their seats and getting ready to go launch in space today. This first Long Duration crew to fly on a special spacecraft as a diverse collection of experiences they bring to this mission today. Crew dragon commander mike hopkins was born in lebanon, missouri but grew up outside richland, missouri. He was selected as an astronaut by nasa in 2009. Hopkins is a colonel in the United States air force and holds degrees in aerospace engineering. He flew on the russian soyuz. Logging 166 days in space. Hopkins performed two spacewalks totaling 113 hours. His military experience includes testing c17 and c130 aircraft. Pilot Victor Glover was a native of california. Hes a commander in the United States navy and holds degrees in general engineering, flight test engineering, Systems Engineering and military operational art and science. Which will be gloves first space flight, he has extensive military test flight experience. He was test pilot for the fa18 hornet and superhornet. Hes accumulated 3000 flight hours in more than 40 aircraft over 400 carrier arrested landings and 24 combat missions. Mission specialist Shannon Walker is from houston, texas. She was selected as an astronaut by nasa in 2004. She is a doctor of philosophy in space physics. Walker flew on the russian soyuz on board the iss in space, for 163 days. During that mission, she was the robotics operator supporting the team has arrived with the crew arm on schedule. Shannon is one of only few disease people tdozen people d cosmonaut. During the mission, she lived inside the worlds only underwater research station aquarius, which is 50 feet beneath the earth surface. I can attest that the nemo missions are the best analogue to living and working in space. Mission specialist, Soichi Noguchi is from japan. He was selected as an astronaut by japan in 1996. He has degrees in air nautical engineering and is doctor of philosophy. Noguchi logged total 177 days in space. He became the first japanese astronaut to perform spacewalks on the International Space station, completing three of those spacewalks totaling 20 hours. Each of these four crew members will serve as flight engineers for expedition 64. We will be sure to well continue to give you a close look at each of them as we continue to approach our t20 time. Its interesting, as we introduce the crew members. We have all these small world, brings you back connections. Noguchi was on the flight from columbia. One of his crew mates is shannon husband, andy thomas, who is also an astronaut. Its a small world for sure. You know, we heard a lot about their individual experiences, nicole, how important is it to have a group of astronauts on a Mission Together that do have who have been through so many different things. Whats your perspective . I think its just in general, weve seen across different industries, nasa, i think, exemplifies this fact that when we bring different backgrounds together, we have a more Successful Mission and we can look at solving problems in different ways. The International SpaceStation Program, without looking at the crew members here today, has brought together 15 different countries, five International Space agencies all working peacefully successfully for this last 20 years. I think its a perfect example of how when we bring these different experiences together we have real success. Its also worth noting, even though this is the second crew to suit up for crew dragon space flight, they will accomplish several first. Walker will be the first woman on a commercial orbital space flight. Noguchi is the First International partner crew member. He will be the First International partner astronaut to fly aboard three different types of orbital spacecraft. Those being the u. S. Space shuttle, russian soyuz and now third the spacex crew dragon. Glover will be the first black astronaut to fly on a special spacecraft and the first black Long Duration crew member to live aboard space station. Making history on many fronts today. Just checking back in with the crew there. We see them lifting the visor what they were doing just before they were actually pressurizing the suits to make sure that everything was fitting properly, making sure all the seals were in place. The spacesuits are custom fitted for each astronaut. They are especially design to fit their specific body. Theres absolutely no chance that you can put someone elses on and you cant mix them up. Same goes for their seat assignments inside the capsule. These suits utilize zippers in certain places to help make sure. Some of what we saw before, making sure the zippers are fully closed in place, making sure we can apply pressure within the suit for environmental controls and also allows us to maintain environment in the unlikely event of cabin depressurization. Safe to say, this mission represents a lot. Its crazy to think that demo 2, lifted off and splashed down earlier. Years of cooperation with the cargo program, the Cargo Resupply Program with nasa going to the International Space station, developing this crew system that we see here. We had 22 trips to station so far to date and nine of those have been completed on reused dragon. Thats pretty exciting. Weve had lot of progress this year inflight abort test was completed in january and demo 2 back in may and splashed down in august. Nicole were you able to follow along with that absolutely. Just because you were tired from the Astronaut Office, doesnt mean you completely separate yourself. I made a point of following along lot of living bob and doug for sure. Its interesting, bob and doug were in my astronaut class. It was like watching family and pretty special to see when meghan and karen there, their wives were able to be out there. While there are lot of firsts that we have accomplished on this mission, for mike and victor, the most important moment so far was when siochi and shannon was assign to their crew. When they had their full one assignment, it was a big deal. The fourmember crew started training together as a unit earlier this year. I remember shannon saying, it was friday, she was management astronaut on monday she was training for the flight. It was really exciting time for her. While training to fly aboard dragon is serious business, the crew was able to have fun and get to know each other better. Shannon told us that in some ways, pandemic made it easier for them to bond. Once covid hit, nasa and spacex had to find ways to make it safe for the crew to travel. You can hear the hilo flying above us. The crew ended up traveling as a unit and lived together in a house while they were in hawthorn instead of stayin sta n at the end of each day, theydinner together. The crew also told us that the emergency trainings they underwent brought them closer together. Training for emergency scenarios is typically very stressful and the crew have to approach each exercise with an exceptional amount of teamwork. The end of these training days, everyone was always a bit sweaty but mostly smiles as they 8 and debriefed around a Conference Room table. For mike, he said those were some of his favorite moments. Sitting around the table, sharing story and laughing with each other. I know they each talked about how it doesnt feel like work. Its like fun. Its serious business. Theyre having a blast with this. Its clear that this crew enjoyed the journey with each other so far. Going to be exciting to tee them lift off 39a. We are at t minus 3 hours 41 minutes and counting. Nicole, the four of them, looks like they are nearing the suit up process. Whats their head space like now . I think its probably little bit of a balance between holy moly im really here about to go to space today. Then thinking about they need to do as they get strapped into the spacecraft. Victor with his first flight, i imagine, theres little bit of hypersensitivity. You coming in this room. This is a historic room itself. The suitup room. Theres this ora about it. I imagine hes taking everything he possibly can in it. Hell be thankful for the pictures and videos. For sure. The people they are there with, kate mentioned this suitup team, you get to know these people. Theyre along with you for the journey in general, training and all the way out to the pad. You feel like youre there with family as well. You want them to feel like theyre part of the experience, the excitement that youre having too about it. Thanks nicole. We got 15 minutes. Lets check in for operations update. Thanks. Were coming up on t minus 3 hours 40 hours as we wait for the crew to walk out of the building. The area around pad 39a was clear personnel t minus 8 hours. O
