Lot of time thinking about things like that so why am i to sign my name that we refer to myself that way i guess in the world of sound bites i am. H. Is for henry my grandfathers name. I grew up in texas in the arkansas border. Cspan how long did you live there . Guest the time i was born until my first airplane ride. Cspan what was the reason your parents have gone there in the first place . Guest i got dropped out of school when he was 14 and worked as a cowboy when his dad died, walked 21 miles. That wasnt uncommon in those days, became a cotton broker from the farmers and it was a cotton farming center. To realize that you were rich and my reply is i was born rich because of the parents i had. My mother did and my dad saw me finishing the Naval Academy i couldnt take it home and finally i could buy and sell horses but i couldnt take them to a ipad paper routes and more than anything watching him do business with farmers he was a wonderful man and a very kind and decent man he works hard all year and the broker buys it. Treat the farmer family and he will come back to year after year. Good thing to teach a little boy. I have a thousand fond memories of her but she was a tiny little lady who would walk across the Railroad Tracks up the little dirt road past our house, and again and again they would come to our back door and ask for food. While we didnt have a whole lot, he always gave them food. I will never forget one day they said you have a lot of people coming here. He saidcome out here and i will show you why. He says you see that . The term originally came in after he left i said you want me to get rid of that and she said no, these are good people, just like us but they are down on their luck and we should help them. In a thousand ways, she told me that by example, not lecture that example. God bless my dad and anybody else anybody that worked for him when they go to to work he kept paying them because they were people and had families that needed to be taken care of. Every sunday after church he would go to their part of town, go into their homes and sit on their porches and summertime. People didnt do it back then that he did because he loved people. Everybody carried his Business Card and every black man that worked for him understood if anybody treated him improperly, he was to hand them my dads Business Card and he was a very modest man and a highly respected person. As a little boy i saw that and it was a wonderful place to grow up. Outstanding sister everybody asks me the whole time i was growing up why i wasnt with my sister, a grade a student. She became Vice President david coprincipal and i had money to get away and i asked her to run the foundation. She had from the foundation since 1969. This was a foundation that has more overhead. Nobody makes a penny. She runs it as an act of love, does a brilliant job. Well over 100 million. Cspan what is the criteria for giving money away . Guest first time i had money left in 30 days i gave half of it away. I got 5 million i gave 2. 5 million to an Experimental School for disadvantaged children. This is children who would have no chance they were going to prison or they would be on welfare ar and started when they were tiny, got breakfast, lunch and dinner and got the hope andd nurturing that i got at home, they got a proper diet. The school logo is a thumbprint and that meant you are special and unique and theres only one person like you and you can be anything you want to be. That school was a success if it was part of the Public Schools and it got wiped out one day by a federal judge on an integration order and he didnt know what he had done until after he had done it. Its exciting these little children at the school right now from the time they are three to nine. We are changing it now that the First Contact with the mother is pregnant and many cases she will come right to the school and until he or she finishes third grade heres the exciting thing in the general privation hanging on the ropes, 90 of the children are on the honor roll. You can take a segment of society destined to go on welfare and send them to college but also because our Public Schools are too easy. From that population, 100 100 t started first gradbutstarted fie ropes. It will be a generational change in adult allday and my parents had changed. Cspan do you remember the first thing you have to say . Guest i never thought about it. I was president of the student council. They had decided to build a new Junior College across the street on a square of land. I and the other students felt this was a great mistake and they should build a better campus. This was unthinkable at this time. I took a pretty good level but we were able to build a consensus number two if you do expect to get cut up and number three if you are worried about your image its probably not good to get around. Host you know you get a lot of response and youve been at the press club three times in 16 to 18 months. I dont know that they have done this before. Do you know why they invite you back . Guest i have no idea. Everybody asks me about and why did they invite you back . I dont know. Cspan do you get reaction . Guest it is my understanding they get a very large reaction but you should check that with them. Cspan what do you do when you gave a speech, you should look out there and see if thats what do you do and what is your technique . Guest i talk about what i believe in and i write my own speech. If there is a technique thats it. I talk about what i really believe in. Cspan do you sit around and talk too much . Guest for example, i collect newspapers. I read newspapers and magazines, tear things up in facts and numbers and i spent two days on the speech i gave to a common typ, typed upon a typewriter thn i was a young officer in the navy and then had a great young lady that worked in my office and she cleaned it up when did you start doing that, taking the articles . Guest a number of years ago. I would read things that interested me on education, international affairs, the development of children, research is another interest. Anything that im interested and i take an hour and a half off some afternoon and get it organized. Anytime i make a speech i just have to go disappear and get it organized and write it and this is an unusual case i try to organize the press club. It shows. Cspan where do you live now . Guest in dallas. Its headquartered here in virginia. Cspan you mentioned eds earlier. What is the . Guest a Computer Service company that created a whole segment of the computer industry where you go to the companies and tell them in advance what they are going to get and what its going to cost and how long it takes to build and operate for ten years at a predetermined price which is a great appeal to the countries over just short of finding out each year with a budgethebudget with computers id that was a great adventure. Its fun to talk to the young entrepreneurs. You go to Harvard Business school. How do you make all that money and get the idea to start . I never had a goal to make a lot of money and never cared about money. My idea was considered so bad when i started up if nobody else would touch it and i was stuck with the whole thing. Fortunately, it worked but i would love to have an investor that everybody looked at it and said you are going against ibm. You will never make it and then a few months into the game in the first account that i find them here is life in the trenches. They got the public bank and arthur young to come out and explain to the founder that if he did business with me it would bankrupt them. A strange Little Company with a strange idea and when they left, he started out cooking potato chips in his kitchen and delivering them in his truck. He looked around the room, smiled and said that these boys must have something. Or all these companies would be overreacting in these ways. I later became the largest customer. When the public bank failed i had interesting assignment guaranteeing the transaction was building so that nothing would be interrupted in the process. Wait long enough into the world comes back full circle i guess. Host then the Naval Academy. Guest is importan guest is important for young people to understand things like this. First year, second year and one day a telegram came and i had it framed in my office. Of course i remember who it was so i was thrilled and wrote him a thank you letter. A man called me and said do you ever wonder how you got that appointment i was the senators aide and we were cleaning out his office and i said senator, we have an appointment for the Naval Academy. Shhe said does anybody want it d the senator said your name never came up. I got to go to a great school and got an education and was top leadership to give you a contrast accepted at west point he spent his life on the factory floor. The difference between he and myself, i passed the exam. I will tell you another thing i never forget, if im driving down the street and there is a road crew working inside look at those guys, they are taxpayers and its people like that that made it possible for me to have an education so i have been very, very lucky and the lock continues. 4953, keep in mind ive never seen a ship it was terrific. Terrific. I met wonderful people from all over the United States an interesting thing happened they were evaluating on leadership by classmate of the upperclass, u, military officers and academic officers. At the end of the first year they posted that and i was ranked first in the class. It was like learning to play the piano by ye ear. That kind of ranking kept happening and i realized this is every skill i had that nobody thought about before. It was just something new. I had the honor of being the president of the senior class, junior class on the committee. I just had a wonderful experience. I have four great years. Host cspan do you remember people that taught you . Guest number one, my mom and dad. Number two, some great teachers. They said its a shame you are not as smart as your friends and i had some outstanding friend. I had young people i grew up with that were an inspiration to me. Visit talk is cheap. Straight as the next six weeks she laughed and walked away. It gave me the academic record that allowed me at the end of my first year at the Naval Academy i finished writing up to the toy class in english i said i thought about writing new. So she had an impact. They sought his advice and said theres only one issue and that is staying on the principle that if you think you should, thats what you should do. Dont worry about the controversy. Cspan how many years . Guest 2 00 in the morning to that experienced it gave me an opportunity to see the world and its interesting that when i grew up of geography courses were terrific. I knew where everything was i couldnt afford to go. Now everybody can afford to go but they dont know where it is because they dont teach geography anymore. We went around the world i came home ancamehome and by then i hy present wife, she was still in college and had five children from 34 down to 21. Cspan what is your philosophy about kids and money . Guest it became a publicly owned company and people started asking me what i first felt like and i said repeatedly i dont feel like a big success and i wont until all of these children are adults and they have to do something about that concern. All five are just worldclass. The sun is the most wellknown. He has my name. There is no better place to live. In college he decided one year he was going to jump school then he decided he wanted to go 13 weeks marine officer training and a navy crews wanted to fly a helicopter he got his license and wanted to fly when he flew to alaska came home and this is i can fly this thing around the world. Anybody that has any sense can fly over a big lake. He kept coming in and coming in. Finally we announced he was going to do it, he came in, looked me in the eye and said you raised me to be this way and now yonouns you dont like me ty i am. If you start this, just dont quit. He laughed and walked out and 12 days later walked off. They made it around the world in 30 days the most critical part was from japan to try to get them to the carolinas. He came up with a creative idea this is in a 12 day period halfway between the illusions and japan. I could land on the container and refuel. I said that is a good idea but can you find one and they came back and he had a time slot and landed just ahead of a typhoon so hes halfway there. The ship was rolling to the point they had to get it off the top. All of these calculations showed he would go in the water at night. If they try to land at the carolinas they would shoot him down so he wasnt testing to go over there. So he pragmatically decided i di will get as close as i can its the same interpretative and they would have to shift it he won the medals very few people have with a technical difficulty he got all kinds of recognition and i watched him then he came in in a few months into this i will never feel right about myself going into the service. I will let you know. The coast guard and the air force. They selected him as a cadet and i said that they wouldnt have picked you on day number one. Here is a kid with a silver spoon. Then he had a great adventure as a fighter pilot. One the top award, none of his sisters knew what it was. Just had a great experience in the air force and suddenly the air force sergeant recommended him as one of the Outstanding Young men. Thats nice, thats from the heart the proudest moment in my life is what happened next. He said theres one thing thats important to me i want tha won t sergeant sitting right next to you and there is a kid with his head straight for he finished his turn in the air force and i found out last summer he had an opportunity to fly for 29 and have done it. One last great for those i hope hes out of it now but straight down the runway he put it o than his tail and 70,000 feet into thats something an american Fighter Pilots would never think that he could have the chance to do. Ask him if he wanted to do and he did i. Can go through each of my daughters but we would have to have a sixhour show. They are all too good to be true. Two of them are married and have four grandchildren expecting another two and another getting married. Cspan would you say that you have a large disappointment in your life and if you have, what was that . Guest a love disappointments. Everybody thinks like this carefully planned we will come back to that if you want to. Ive had people in the best schools in the country say if they were like you, i could do what youve done and this goes all the way to say what do you mean . If i didnt feel pain or hurt or cried, then i could do what you do. I said do you really think thats the way it is . I think its important for everyone to understand that just goes with it and theres a lot of frustrations and disappointments the ones that would have broken my heart, no. Five out of five or just pearls and i can tell you how proud we are. Cspan money, agreed. Talk about that, do you ever feel greed . Guest i am not interested in money and my wife isnt interested in money. Because i surrounded myself with a group of very talented people who built a Great Company it wouldnt be the company it is today if we hadnt have all these talented people and as it is as executive, you understand the multiplier. You cant take it with you. If you can take it with you is the most overrated thing in the world. We drove into dallas had everything that we owned was in the trunk of a 52 and we were just as happy then as we are today. Happiness is a state of mind. Its the saddest thing in the world to see people chase the dollar. Greed is terribly disruptive. We are born selfish and anyone will tell you that. We have to be taught to care and share. Greed is disruptive to the civilized society. As a hunter survivalist. Greedy people are disruptive. That was a very destructive thing in the company. A lot of damage cspan are you going to run for president and you told us you are waiting for the 50 states sign up. Do you think it will have been . Guest i dont know. I didnt think so. It came up on the larry king show and the first question was will you run, no then we talked about a lot of things. Then the last question was is there any set of circumstances, under any circumstances would you run and i said just one. I have all these people that write to me and call me day after day after day that are just your ordinary people most of the letters were written in longhand. If those people on their own want to go out in 50 states with nobody programming them, nobody telling them what to do and put me on the ballot as an independent, i will run as their servant, but if i do, i dont want to belong to anybody but them and they wouldnt consider running within the twoparty system because you have to compromise and make deals to get their. I feel personally that reason it isnt working now is the ordinary person in our country, the owner has abdicated his responsibility as the owner. You are supposed to have a government that comes from us to washington. The people in washington are supposed to be our servant. You have a government that comes from washington at us and the people feel power. And that is the first example i can give you right here in them is our servants in washington are surrounded by quadruple layers of security. If you go down the street, the owners of the company come if you live in washington, d. C. , but in the neighborhoods where you are afraid to go outside the daytime that is assuming you have some folks working at your house in a high risk area but they were all covered with security. And they were absolutely on your own when you walk up and down the street. Streets. The most interesting phenomenon when i came to washington i said isnt this interesting. The owners are unprotected and a good time and got elected servants protected themselves like royalty. The challenge is to have the city safe working at the capital of the United States. Cspan have you thought through what would happen if they are signed up . Guest i told people i would run and i will. If there is only one condition and i hope to cross this bridge early because i have to put this on the ballot pretty early. I have to petition pretty early. I will hope to have a vice the e president is a more qualified person than i am, and i will not just reach for an empty seat, this person will have to be totally qualified to replace me if anything should happen to me. Thats the way it works if you are in and defend and. Youve got to pick your <
