CSPAN2 Campaign 2020 Pete Buttigieg Holds Rally In Las Vegas July 13, 2024

Pete Buttigieg
spoke at a rally with supporters in las vegas. It was the candidates first major event in nevada slated to hold the earliest democrat caucus after iowa. Thank you thank you, senator, and thank you to everybody providing such great leadership in this state and in this community. You know, they say that nevada today looks like the future of what america will be like in the decades ahead and if thats true, we have a
Bright Future
as a country. Thank you for joining us on this saturday and thank you for caring enough about the future of the country to be part of this process. I want to begin by asking you to form an image in your mind, paint it in as much detail as you can as you visualize this day thats going to come soon, sooner rather than later if i have anything to say about it. I want you to picture that first day that the sun comes up over nevada and donald trump is no longer the president of the
United States
. [cheers and applause] are we ready for that day . Are we ready to do what it takes to bring that day about . I so im running to be the president on that day. But i want you to really think about what were going to need on that day because if you think about it you can see whats going to be waiting for the next president. Sure, thats the day that some of our problems end. I think were all ready to put the chaos and the corruption in the rearview mirror, right . Put the tweets in the rearview mirror. But still, thats not the day our problems end. Thats the day our work begins. Think about how it will feel, how divided our country will be on that day. Even more polarized and exhausted from fighting than we are right now, in need of a president who is focused on unifying the
American People
. And yet,
Something Else
will be true at the exact same time which is that the issues that brought us to this point will be even more serious than they are now. The sun will be coming up over a climate thats just a few years away from the point of no return. Sun will be coming up over an economy where they tell us everythings great because the dow jones is looking good, but one job is not enough for far too many people. The sun will be coming up over schools where kids are learning active shooter drills before theyre hold enough to learn how to read. Thats what the next president is going to have to deal with to rise to meet those kinds of issues and to do it in a way thats actually going to leave our country more unified and not divided. Now, thats a tall order, but thats what the presidency is for. Im asking you to caucus for me because i believe that the presidency has a purpose and the purpose of the presidency is not to glorify the president , its to unify the
American People
and get these big things done. Thats why im asking for your support. And i see the road map for how to use the powers of the presidency to get that done. And it all starts with the values that we share as an
American People
. If we
Pay Attention
to what those values require of us, if we follow the values where they lead us, which can be a very progressive direction if we
Pay Attention
,
Pay Attention
to that flag and what the values of patriotism and love of country really require of us, but thats not as easy as the president who throws himself a military parade. Im not talking about the chestthumping militaryism of a president who avoided serving when it was his term and acts like throwing over military justice to pardon war criminals somehow makes you military. Its going to take more than that. That. [applause] im talking about the kind of support for our troops that honors them with a commitment never to send them into harms way if theres an alternative. Im talking about love of country that begins with the knowledge that our country consists of people, and you cannot love a country if you hate half of the people in it. Its going to take
Something Else
to build up the life of our nation for the road ahead. If we really mean business keeping this country safe, then weve got to recognize that that starts right here at home. Thats why weve got to see to it that the
Second Amendment
can never again be twisted into an excuse to do nothing at all to keep our schools and our
Shopping Centers
and our concerts and our places of worship safe from gun violence. We must act in the name of our security. And if were serious about protecting this country, then weve got to protect this countrys future, thats why weve got to do something to follow nevadas lead and deal with
Climate Change
in a way that creates jobs and rises to meet that as the great
Global Security
threat of our time. Weve got to do that to keep our country safe. Thats where that value of patriotism leads me. Im thinking about the very values theyre using to try to divide us and how they might unite us. Look at how they used fate to exclude some people and tell them they dont believe. Here is the thing, our country was built that they would belong to every religion equally, thats part of our constitution. We can uphold that value and let the faithful know that they have a choice and that choice is to do
Something Better
than what we saw out of texas refusing to accept refugees as they announced today. Im talking about listening, no matter what your faith tradition is, listening to the idea of i was a stranger, and you welcomed me. I was hungry and you fed me. Whatever youve done to the least of these youve done for me and the golden rule that we treat others as we would want to be treated. We could all look to those values while insisting that god does not belong to a
Political Party
in the
United States
of america [cheers and applause] im talking about values like the way we value work. If we value work, weve got to value workers and that means put an end to right to work law and better conditions and pay. Im thinking about values like democracy. I dont mean just democracy as a system i mean the value of democracy, the belief that it matters morally that we see to it that every vote is counted that every voter counts. Thats why weve got to put an end to
Voter Suppression
, especially the racial
Voter Suppression
that requires us to pass a 21st century
Voting Rights
act. [cheers and applause] thats why weve got to do something about these districts that are being drawn by politicians who get to pick out our voters instead of the other way around. Why weve got to do something about money in politics. If it takes constitutional reform to deal with citizens united, then thats what the amendment process is for, because its the right thing to do. This is our chance to make good on those values and one more value weve got to take seriously, freedom. But when i say freedom, i dont just mine cutting every regulation and every program and every tax thats out there. Im not interested in preserving amazons freedom to pay zero in federal income taxes next year. Theyll be fine. Im talking about the freedom to live a life of your choosing. Now, sometimes that does mean getting government out of the way. Im a big fan of keeping county clerks, for example, out of the business of telling you who you ought to marry. [cheers and applause] lets keep government out of the business of telling women what their reproductive choices ought to be. [cheers and applause] thats part of
American Freedom
, but another part of
American Freedom
is looking to the
Public Sector
to step up and deal with things. Every mayor knows this because were responsible for paving and plowing the streets. Maybe not a lot of plowing in las vegas, but we support local infrastructure because we know youre not free if you dont have a road to get you to where youre going. Youre not free if you cant count on clean,
Safe Drinking Water
coming out of the tap. So we deliver, we deliver schools at the local level and now its time to back that up with a secretary of state in washington who believes in
Public Education
and supports teachers. [cheers and applause] and, yes, it means doing something about health care because youre not free if you dont have it. Thats the idea of medicare for all who want it. Make sure every american can access the quality public plan, but trust you to decide whether you want it because if youd rather be on the plan your union negotiated, thats fine by me. The important thing is to make sure one way or the other, there is no such thing as an uninsured american in the future. [cheers and applause] so you see how these values can lead us forward in a way that can actually serve to help our country be more united. And we cant wait. Weve got to act now. This cant wait 10 years, this cant wait four years. The climate cant wait, its too close to the point of no return. We cant wait to do something about the crisis of depths of despair which means acting on meant health and addiction with just as much as we talk about other issues. [applause] weve got dreamers and mixed status families that cannot wait one more year living in the shadows, thats why weve got to fix our immigration system and give a path to citizenship. Why we cant wait to act to make this a country where your race has no bearing on your health or your wealth or your relationship with
Law Enforcement
in this nation. Weve got to act, it cant wait. And when we act, we have an opportunity to bring about a better life. Look, i know that theres a lot of fighting in politics, and well fight when we have to. Im not afraid to, but im never going to let us get so caught up in the fighting, that fighting is all weve got because the point isnt the fight. The point is what were fighting for. The point is what lies on the other side of the fight and thats an end to the crisis of belonging in this country. [applause] thats the opportunity in front of us and thats why im calling out to progressives. Im calling out to moderates. And im thrilled every time i meet one of those future former republicans, put an end to this white house and bring a
Better Future
for this country. Thats how were going to win. [cheers and applause] now, our numbers have grown a little bit since the first time we turned up in nevada looking to make friends. But still not such a big room that we cant have something of a conversation so weve gathered up questions on note cards from folks as you were coming in to guide our discussion and be our voice id like to welcome moe back to the stage with the famous fish bowl and well talk about whatever is on your mind. Dont we have the best organizers and volunteers, by the way . [cheers and applause] what moral leadership will you provide to schools regarding bigotry and bullying . What a great question and if youre what was the name . Monty. If youre here give a wave or a holler so i can look in your hi. Thanks for coming. This is part of what im talking about when i mention that crisis of belonging thats going on. People are getting the message for
Different Reasons
in different ways that you dont belong. You dont belong because of where you fit in the economy. You dont belong because of your religion. You dont belong because of the language you speak at home or who you love and it starts in school and that means fixing it starts in school. Look. The presidency is a lot of jobs in one. Part of its policy for sure and im a policy guy. I love policy. But theres more to it than that. Part of its running a government, running an
Administration Just
like a mayors got to do, but on a whole different scale, but its not just that theres
Something Else
, theres
Something Else
in the presidency so important, i dont think we understood just how bad we were needing it until we saw a president who doesnt have it at all. And that is moral leadership. [cheers and applause] it is setting a tone. Yes, weve got to have the right policies, mentorship programming, antibullying programming, and hate crime legislation and policy, but its just how we treat other people and how the president talks about others, especially those who are critical because were not all going to agree. Thats not what this is about. Its not about making everybody agree, its about making sure everyone belongs. And the only thing that doesnt belong in our great country right now is hatred and exclusion and we will flush it out with our every word when im in the white house. Thank you. What will you do to stop the rising cost of prescription drugs . Oh, great question. I see some of our aarp folks here who have been such a great voice on this. Look, i know that most of the attentions going to the argument over medicare for all who want it versus medicare for all, versus
Something Else
. Whose plan is the best. Of course, i think our plan is the best. But weve got to talk about a whole bunch of other things in health care. Weve got to talk about a provider shortage and a nursing shortage and a shortage of care workers. Weve got to talk about longterm care, weve got to talk about racial inequity and outcomes and rural health and yes, weve got to talk about cost. So, here is what were going to do. First of all, were going to have an out of pocket cop, 200 for folks on medicare, 250 across the board and its monthly. Here is why its got to be monthly. I see so many folks, friends of mine who are delaying a medical procedure or waiting until a prescription is filled until a certain month youve got to make sure you hit your out of pocket cap. Its not good medically or good for your health and not a lot of us experience the economy on a yearly basis. Most of us our bills, last time i checked are coming in every month not every year and our paychecks are every two weeks, not every year. Thats why its got to be monthly. Two, we have seen
Drug Companies
increase prices not because they have to, not because theres some shortage of a rare ingredient, but when you think about and by the way, things you need in order to live insulin. Epipens, and life saving medication for aids and i see people here affected, and any company that raises the price of drugs faster than inflation for no reason other than they can, weve got to put a stop to that. Third and third, this is so common sense its amazing it hasnt happened yet, but the time has come to make sure that medicare is empowered to negotiate drug prices with
Drug Companies
. Its common sense. Were going to do it and its part of how were going to be able to afford the other stuff. Why dont you have cats . [laughte [laughter] nothing against cat, happy c caterday, but cass is allergic and thats my excuse so weve got two dogs, buddy and truman, theyre rescue dogs. [cheers and applause] truman came to us, hed had a rough life before so it took a few months before he would do anything, but cower under the bed and then he got used to it and thought he might be lonely at home and thats where buddy came in. Chassen said meet him, hes laid back. Not true. Hes got one eye and been on a journey and brought love to the household and i think well draw the line at those two dogs for now. What is your number one
Foreign Policy
priority . Tristan. Are you here . The number one priority is to restore the credibility of the
United States
. [cheers and applause] when i was deployed, i could feel the ways that just as sure as my body armor, one of the things that protected me was the flak flag on my shoulder, and the fact that the flag was known to enemies and allies to stand for a country that kept its word. If we lose that, we lose everything because we count on so many people to put their lives on the line to stand with us. If you think about the 21st century threats were dealing with, not just conventional military issues, but state terrorism, cyber security, climate security, thats going to take more cooperation than ever. strength when necessary in order to keep us safe, i will also never hesitate to reach out and include our allies in our decisions and build up the friendships to keep the bulk of the work, and the leading nation in the community of nations. [applaus [applause] since you are a millennial, what are your plans to address technology that affects security and democracy. Very good question and if i were you, just give a holler. Taylor. So im starting to feel like an older millennial these days, but i count, i made it, i made the cut by three weeks according to wikipedia. Look, weve got to get on top of the challenges that these technologies create and early on, i think the government hesitated to do too much regulation because its such a new thing and we wanted to let it grow and see where its going. Its no longer a frail flower, its something that could devour us. We need to see that democracy comes into play to see that tech is working for us and not the other way around. Did any of you see where we had a tech founder before congress and abundantly clear that people regulating it had no idea what they were regulating. Thats dangerous, right . Thats how the
American People
get out maneuvered for companies that have grown too powerful. So powerful whenever they make a decision as a company theyre making a policy decision that we have to live by. Its why we have to make sure that we stand up when theres anticompetitive behavior so weve got to make sure that there are laws explaining what our rights are over the data that we create. Even when we give it to a company, we still ought to have certain rights. And think about this, did you ever download an app and scroll down the terms and conditions and click agree. Who here has actually ever read one of those . Have you actually . Good. Weve got some lawyers here. Most of us dont read that, right . But in the eyes of todays

American People get out maneuvered for companies that have grown too powerful.
Legal Framework it counts as a good faith contract weve entered into. There could be anything this there. Weve got to make sure we set a baseline, not 50 different policies for 50 different states, but a baseline on
Data Security and data privacy to make sure that were protected and weve got to recognize this is a security challenge, too. As we speak, countries, probably not just russia, are working right now with some of the best minds they can muster to use technology to undermine our democracy and we need a 21st understanding of that those threats. Right now weve got a president whose idea of a security he can technology 17th century, a big wall and a moat full of alligators. Thats not going to keep us safe against
Cyber Threats in the 21st century. We have need the right strategy from the artificial intelligence, to real deterrents to not make it worth your while to do this has a country. Even if you can, you figure out you shouldnt and thats my solutions in securing the country. [applause] as a president what will you do for low income affordable and livable housing. Mary. Again, if thats you, just let me know. I bet its a lot of folks here, thinking about it. There you are. So, hi thank you. With your help were going to make it happen and as soon as we do, weve got a lot of work to do on affordable housing. My plan invests over 400 billion to benefit 7 million
American Families that are housing insecure. What does that look like . First off weve got to have more housing thats why well get 2 million more built through funding and local policies that help promote that to get build. And local government to make sure we have more inclusionary, and if you have a family with kids, youre eligible for housing vouchers and right now theres a backlog. We could put an end to homelessness at least for kids and families with kids even as we work on the toughest areas of homelessness that involve
Mental Health and addiction. Weve got to make sure as we look to the future our housing designs are around equity. Because if you dont have it, basic freedom. Thank you. What will you do to connect more with hispanic voters . Eli. All right, where is eli. Thanks for coming . [laughter] thanks for coming, good seeing you, yeah. Well, first of all, were going to make sure that were speaking to the issues that affect hispanic and latino voters. Thats a whole bunch of things. On tv they talk about it like everybodys the same. There are different issues. Mixed status families different from those who have been here for generations. We have to support businesses led by latinos. Talk about health care, disproportionately a challenge for hispanic families. Weve got to deal with immigration reform, its the issues, but also the engagement. [speaking spanish] to make sure that were getting that across. With your help we can engage more and more folks and with your help i hope youll do it. Muchas gracias, good to see you. How do you compete against your billionaire competitors who sunk 10 million into nevada . Linda. Hi, linda. [laughter] so, so, yeah, its a bit of a challenge. I dont know if you saw
Forbes Magazine did this ranking of all of the candidates by individual net worth. [laughte [laughter] guess where i am . All the way on the bottom. Were doing okay, but by the standards of people running for president , smack on the bottom. So not a millionaire. In fact, im the only person i think on the stage next week who isnt a millionaire or a billionaire. But [applause] then again we seem to be running ahead of a lot of folks who have a lot more money than we do. Look, weve started this thing a year ago, almost exactly a year ago. We had an exploratory committee. It was a staff of four in an office that was about the size of this stage. We had no big mailing list, no years of building up federal
Committee Full of
Campaign Contributions and certainly no great personal wealth and we have now taken our place as one of the leading president ial campaigns in the country. If we can do that then i think the right message will get us all the way. [cheers and applause] having said that, in the event that anybody here would like to go to pete for america. Com and chip in in any amount, we would be very grateful for that help. Do candidates get briefed about the southern border and how would you handle the crisis differently. Joan. Great question, again, joan if youre here hello. So weve been following the challenges at the border closely. Ive got a fantastic security and policy team that includes a lot of the best minds from the
Obama Administration and other parts of our
National Security experience who maybe you saw the support that theyre offering that theyre doing really good work and they keep me informed. What were seeing is, first of all, inhumane and unacceptable candidates that are moral stain on the
United States of america. [applause] and so its not only yes, weve got to do a lot of legislative work to fix immigration. Weve got to create that pathway to citizenship. Weve got to protect dreamers and make sure theyre first in line. Dreamers are every bit as american as the rest of us, they dont have the documents to show for it, but thats the work weve got to get done through policy. Theres stuff we can do on day one. Day one, family separation is permanently over. [applaus [applause] another thing we change on day one is these obstacles for these people seeking asylum when seeking asylum is a legal right under international law. And third, were going to work right away to make sure that there is no longer asuch thing has a forprofit
Detention Center for children. That shouldnt exist and were going to put it end to it on day one. We have time for one more. Only one more. How will you secure our schools and what are your policies for gun reform . Risa. Hello, thanks for coming. How old are you, if you dont mind my asking. Say again . 14. Good that youre here. Youre way ahead of the curve. When i was 14 i was mostly paying attention to star trek. So the fact that youre engaged in this process speaks well to you. Im glad that youre concerned about policy and politics, but i dont think you should have to feel concerned about physical safety at school. Thing that we should deal with that so you dont have to. And the shocking thing is the
American People, including most republicans and most gun owners want us to undertake common sense reform and
Congress Still wont do it. Thats why we need a president willing, if necessary, to go right into the home towns of members ever
Congress Standing in the way and asking why theyre facing down even their own constituents. What do we actually do . Universal background checks, its common sense, at a minimum. Red flag laws like you all passed here in nevada that are going to disarm domestic abusers and people who can be a threat. You show it can be done and that its constitutional. And theres one more thing, when it comes to the kind of weaponry that is available, the kind of ammunition and the kind of guns, anything remotely resembling the kind of weaponry i trained on in order to go to afghanistan has no business being sold anywhere near your school and well act on assault weapons when im your president. Times up . [cheers and applause] one more time for moe for guiding our discussion. Thank you. [cheers and applause] and i want to thank all of you for being a part of this process and i can tell from the seriousness of your questions and the energy youve brought to this room that you are aware of the power that you have. Nevada, you have a thumb on the scale when it comes to deciding the future of this country and i can tell that youre taking that seriously. Its just a few weeks away and you will be a huge part of making a decision about what happens next. Thats why i want to leave you with this thought. I think a lot of us are watching the news, watching whats happening in washington and its just exhausting. I mean, this impeachment thing if it gets to the senate and its foregone conclusion, it wears you out to think about it, but if we give in to that sense of exhaustion. If we give in to a sense of hopelessness, thats when the scynics win and im here to make that happen. Hope is a funny word to use. Its what were up against as a country. The idea of hope went out of style in our politics, but im here to make the case, running for office is an act of hope. Thats why we call a candidate the 2020 hopefuls. Because were here as an express of hope and so are you. Its an act of hope to support a candidate. Its an act of hope to contribute to a candidate. Its an act of hope to show up at a caucus and to vote at all. So are you ready to spread your sense of hope to those who are this close to giving up . [cheers and applause] and are you ready to bring about that sunrise i was talking about where we can put this era in the past and launch the one thats going to come next . [cheers and applause] and are you ready to find some joy in the process of making history together and changing the story of the
United States of america . [cheers and applause] well, i think nevada is going to make me the next nominee and your next president and when you do that, ill work every day to make you proud. Thank you for being here. We will see you on the campaign trail and thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. [inaudible conversations] well continue to see that theres a fluid rate, but that were in the hunt and pushing with an underdog mentality until the voting against. Mayor, you talked about the importance of doing well in iowa to go to nevada and
South Carolina and onward. What do you think is the cause of the drop. You know, were not too caught up in the change from one poll to the next poll. We know were in a strong position and theres no campaign i would trade with and iowa is important because its our point to demonstrate our strength to voters who are very pragmatic in places like
South Carolina and nevada who want to see a candidate win. I know you recently tweeted everything going on, the military tell me whats your reaction to the latest whats going on in iraq . Iran. And first of all, iran is responsible and the entire region is more dangerous, a single mistake can lead to death and destruction and even set us on a path to war that nobody could stop. So the priority now has to be making sure that we walk away from instead of toward that break. More questions will be asked of congress in the coming days and weeks and bottom line we need to act to prevent war and have a more rather than less. And iraq for the u. S. Ramping up the tensions first of all, iran is solely responsible for shooting down the airline. We have a responsibility to make sure the
United States is doing what it can to deescalate and make the middle east a safer place. Outside the top five you talked about in the past [inaudible] your success in iowa . I think a lot of voters here who will be looking for that show of strength and iowa of course is the first stop on the calendar to demonstrate that so it becomes more important than ever and of course well be campaigning on the ground to directly get the support of caucus goers its possible it win here without doing well in analysts make their judgments about that. Are you going to be doing anything different [inaudible] what were seeing is everything, the voters who have been coming to events for years
Northwest Airlines our narrowing their choices well see a
Closing Argument who brings home why im the best to beat donald trump and the
Washington Post
National Poll of voters [inaudible] well, i think the biggest thing that we saw there was an interest in who can win and demonstration of who can compete and beat this president. We need to demonstrate that and one of the first chances well get to do that will be in iowa. Thank you very much. Thank you. Our campaign 2020 coverage continues tonight live at 8 p. M.
