Subject a very important subject as you may know i am a pharmacist currently the only pharmacist serving congress of healthcare something extremely important to me. It is also important to the american citizens and everyone would agree with that. I thought it was interesting that you start by you start the book with the premise that the Healthcare System is broken. And if we look at the polls, think the polls would indicate that. Almost 70 of the people in america say the Healthcare System is broken. Right, i really think that healthcare is going to be the number one domestic policy issue in the president ial election. In a recent poll just came out from dallas it said 35 of the American People polled rate healthcare is extremely important as one of the issues. We have seen in the polling, 53 of americans support a singlepayer with no private coverage at all. But now 65 are supporting the public option which will be a Government Insurance plan that would compete against private insurers. I called does stepping stone approach. I would think the proof is in the pudding. If you look at the last election cycle two years ago, i guess it was my party, my party the Republican Party we were ousted as the majority in the house of representatives. Many people make the argument the reason for that was the issue of healthcare. Many of us campaigned on repeal and replace, and unfortunately we came close we didnt get that done. And it was shown at the ballot box. Exactly and i think it was unfortunate because i think donald trump won the presidency knew how the house in the senate saying were going to repeal and replace this disastrous obamacare. At turn the whole Healthcare System upside down for a very few people. But we are definitely going to see healthcare be the out layer and be the issue. Weve got to prove an tramp present a Cohesive Strategy to the American People to educate on why it is important we have a marketbased Health Care System and not one controlled by government such as the federal government. Lets talk about obamacare for a minute the obamacare wrecked the book was written by senator tom coburn and he made the statement there is that the Affordable Care act failed to deliver on its promises. Five years after president obamas legislative achievement went into full effect individual market premiums have risen 75 . Many low and middle income people have been forced into plans with adaptable as high as 12000. What is your opinion Obama Obamacare . Obamacare will turn ten on march 23 this year. I thought for sure it would have been overturned in the Supreme Court in 2012 and then in 2015, but senator coburn is absolutely right. The American People do not like obamacare because of high premiums and high deductibles as you mention. And they are even higher coming into this year 2020. A Small Network of doctors and hospitals, a lot of people have talked to about the platinum or the gold plan on the exchanges, thought that they were going to build a keep their doctor, their healthcare be fantastic. Unfortunately they call their Doctors Office and they said we are not taking any of the exchange plans. So its really being in overturned and the healthcare and system and it has not done what we wanted to do. And still is about 207 Million People in this country uninsured. But most of them had options they couldve signed under the exchange and were eligible for medicaid and others and for subsidies on the exchange. And they just didnt sign up. Were looking at about 4 Million People, some were illegals it could not sign up for obamacare. But really we need a competition and choice in healthcare because we have families and individuals should be able to get the kind of healthcare that suit their needs and not one where the government is mandating Ten Essential Health benefits and all the states. Mandates that really make healthcare more extensive and limit the choices that people have. From my perspective i have always thought the greatest failing of obamacare of the Affordable Act was that did take choice and competition out of healthcare people and away from patients and from doctors where it should be. We want a system that empowers doctors and patients not the federal government, not state government. So that was really i really thought we would be able to repeal and replace obamacare when the democrats took the house back in 2018. I think the republicans made a mistake and not really explaining to the American People what would happen to those people to preexisting conditions. Because the democrats set a hundred 20 million americans have preexisting chronic conditions there to lose their healthcare and theyll be out of the cold itll be a disaster. But most of those people have employersponsored insurance and theyre not going to lose their coverage. There are only about 6 Million People with a have chronic conditions who are in the individual markets. Those of the people we need to take care of and doctor tom price when he was in the house when he was in the house he talked a lot about it in the federal government to give money to the state said that it could set up or expand and make better the high risk pool said that those people could get really good coverage that they could afford and they wouldnt lose it. And the younger people who really came out against obamacare even with individual mandate and pay that penalty rather than buying insurance because the cost of a young person of 205 or 208 of three to 400 a month and with the cover with preexisting conditions. And theyll say hey i minute pay that individual mandate rather than by healthcare coverage. So everyone else was supporting those people who are with preexisting conditions. And i would have to agree with you although i love my party and support my party. I dont think messaging is arched on point. We need to do a better job with that. But if you look at the American Healthcare act that came within one senators voted passing, you will see that we did indeed cover preexisting conditions but were never able to articulate. That is a problem, and its one of my jobs is a former canadian to educate the American People on why government takeover of our healthcare will lead to ration care, long waiting for cara shortage of doctors, and of course higher and new taxes. People like senator sanders, senator warren, they say the canadian Healthcare System is free. It is not free the average canadian family pays 13311 a year in hidden taxes for a system that denies them care. Lets go into the premise of medicare for all. Medicare for all you describe it is a shiny new toy that the democrats are grabbed hold of and as we quite often say in politics, perception is reality and for a lot of people they perceive this to be the answer. Until we get into the details. Exactly the medicare for all single payers out in the u. S. Bernie sanders talks about this as part of his platform for many years. It really didnt come onto the floor until 2016 when he was running against Hillary Clinton for the democratic nomination for president. He really was stamped with medicare for all. Then in 2017 had a singlepayer bill, 2019 cosponsored eckstein like corey booker and Elizabeth Warren and all of the people that are out in that race were in the race. And so he really told the American People we need the government to run the Healthcare System that will lead to universal coverage and it wont cost very much. And everybody will have access to the very best care. And we can talk about how much the singlepayer system is gonna cost in america, what it would mean for doctors what would be for long waiting list such as in canada where im from or in the uk under the National Health service. So senator sanders is just adamant for singlepayer, and i find it amazing and im sure you do to that he is a 30 in the iowa caucus and at the top of the list of candidates in new hampshire, and just in recent polls in weeks, he is the number one candidates in california. Of course california is extremely liberal, but i was amazed that the young people are really buying into whats better than free healthcare . It sounds like a fantastic idea until you unraveled the onion. Thats exactly right it should be interesting, talk about a contrast, donald trump and Bernie Sanders, thats a contrast. So let me ask you this has grown as you pointed out when his first mention when Bernie Sanders was running against Hillary Clinton, the support was high. In 2000, and it continued to grow and into thousand the support was that 40 and in 2019 and it got up to 51 , 72 of democrats were in favor of it. But however when he started talking about Different Things that you brought up that eliminate private Health Insurance, then all the sudden you see it pumped. Exactly we have poor response coverage and they have employersponsored coverage for its obesity in the polls that 59 , 53 support medicare for all, but then as you say what you think about medicare for all if you are going to lose your private insurance. Then the numbers drop down to 37 . While how do you feel about medicare for all if your taxes are going to go up . Support goes down also to 37 . I think the problem is the American People dont really understand what medicare for all means. It sounds great and its free, but you have to get under the weeds, unravel the onion and explain what it will mean for their healthcare and they wont be able to keep their employersponsored coverage of which of the recent polls, 71 of people who have esi they like it. They rated as excellent or good. So Elizabeth Warren gets up and says ive never met a person in my life who likes their Health Insurance. How would she talk to 71 like their insurance i like my insurance. These are lies to the American People and they think of nobody likes it then why wouldnt we have the government taken over . That is one point ive always noted that people like medicare. The people who are on medicare now generally when you say medicare, it has people positive connotations and people like it. However you add everybody into it and what can happen . If you look at medicare today, which came into being in 1965 under president johnson and the great society, we are spending seven or 800 billion a year on medicare. But the Medicare Trustees said that part eight could be bankrupt by 2030. A lot of people i would say upwards of 50 of people on medicare today have Medicare Advantage or medicare supplemental because one in three doctors are not taking new medicare patients because they are reimbursed at about 40 below what they get treated for people with us with private coverage. That is a very important statistic so if the government took over the whole thing it would be far worse. Just think about medical doctors if they are going to paid 40 below, what they get paid today, they are going to quit and retire. And i think the bigger point is that the best and brightest have traditionally gone into medicine his country and they are not there just not going to go into. And then also doctors are going to be employees of the government. The government would would determine what kind of medicine they could practice, how theyre going to be paid you may be the very best orthopedic and i may be the worse but were going to be paid the same because as a global budget. And what happens in november if the global budget that set for us is done . We would just have to go on vacation. We couldnt afford it. So what about some of these other plans that are advertised with more moderate if you will, Solutions Like adding a public option or allowing more patients to buy into medicare and medicaid . How would that impact our Healthcare System . While i mention 65 polled now support the public option. When you back to an Kamala Harris from california said she could very will be the candidate. But she really her candidacy dropped because of her waffling on medicare for all. One day she supported the next that she didnt. So she lost support and she is out. Senator warren of course, up until very recently was a big supporter of full government takeover of healthcare. Now she says within the first hundred days i would offer a public option in my third year i would bring in medicare for all. So all those people have the public option which is a Government Insurance plan that would compete with these exchanges against private coverage, they would all love their Government Insurance and therefore they would want to be medicare for all. I just think it is a complete lie, we know that in talking to people. But senator warren, mayor buttigieg, joe biden, they have all switched to this well we are going to go to this public option, government plan first and its a steppingstone approach. Even mayor buttigieg has said that while he supports the public option is after couple years its not working and not everybody is in, then he would go to medicare for all. Only talk about medicare for all, that is somewhat of a misnomer because its not somewhat it is a misnomer because it is really should be called what it is, and that is a onesizefitsall government run Healthcare System. Writes, couple years ago i was debating with princeton economics professor has sadly passed away a year end a half or so ago. But i was doing an International Debate with him talking about the canadian wait times, the ration care, you cant see a specialist without seeing a referral, how hard it is to get a doctor. He interrupted me and said sally we have an example the singlepayer system and is terrific. And i said what point is that . He said the va, the Veterans Administration. But of course this is before all the information came out the fact that our vets are not getting top care, they are on waiting list, they dont have access as you all know to the latest drugs and biologics that are available for people who have private coverage. We really have to educate people. I think the American People understand the Veterans Administration is a disaster. Is that what we want . These politicians are really pushing because some people should vote for medicare for all singlepayer and then lets go have a public option just to compete first. And my own ob gyn said just recently when i was having my checkup that i lose a lot of money on my california medicaid patients. I barely break even on medicare and i have to make my salary from people like you who have private coverage. But i get really good care. So lets talk about two of the plans, the sanders plan and the other plan. Hes a friend of yours. Thats okay. I know her and thats fine. They would actually destroy medicare. They would as we know it and for Young Americans rich or poor, that would mean they would be into a new government run Healthcare System. Exactly so she is chairman of the medicare for all caucus she is really pushing to tell the American People purchase from Washington State i am from vancouver so inner similar areas of being very liberal. But senator sanders and jaya paul said medicare would be eliminated medicaid would be limited. The Government Program is for everybody the only two programs left to be the Indian Health services, which i dont think is the best care to our indian people and the second would be the Veterans Administration which is another example of the system that has not gone well. And missus jaya paul has admitted when asked what would happen to all the people who worked in the Insurance Industry and stuff like that. She admitted a Million People in the Insurance Industry would lose their jobs. At Elizabeth Warren when can she was confronted with that i was asked what will these people do it she civil they can work in the auto Insurance Industry or the life Insurance Industry. There is no comparison in working in Health Insurance versus auto insurance. Intercourse Bernie Sanders said will yes one to 2 million will lose their jobs, but im going to set up a federal Training Program to retrain all those people so that within five years they will have a new career. You and i know that is just not going to work, and it would be incre
