We will have lots about the launch of a great guest today. We have bob cabana, director for the candy space to come Jim Bridenstine, administrator, commercial crew astronauts, and nasa deputy administrator jim or more hard. Well be hearing more from them in a minute but first lets talk to bob. Thanks. Good morning and welcome to get space center. I dont have to do how exciting it is to the first light that humans to space from the Kennedy Space center in nine years. And what is tort bad to be doing it from. We went to the men from pad 39a, 882 over 135 Shuttle Missions launched off that path including three of my. Brazzaville brushing away in the air through a partnership with spacex, that pat is being used once again and it is not for commercial crew program as well as of the missions for spacex and thats absolutely outstanding. Truly an historic time on historic pad. We are pleased to offer nasa administer Jim Bridenstine with us this morning. As a member of congress jim was a huge advocate and proponent for aviation and spaceflight ass a member of the Armed Service committee and also the science base and technology committee, and now he sharing that passion with all of us as he lead to mass into a new era space explosion. Jim . Thank you, bob. Its great to be at the Kennedy Space center. We are once again launching american astronauts on american rockets from american soil. This is a big moment in time. Its been nine years since weve had this opportunity. Bob, we want to thank you for the great work you have done getting us up to this point, getting to come to space center ready. Everything is looking good. We are as of right now we are go for launch. The weather is but 60 favorable for lunch tomorrow which is good news converted what we were yesterday. We were at 40 , so the trend is in the right direction. We are very, very excited. I think id like to start by saying again this room is empty. We would love to have this room full. Would love to have it filled with reporters, we would love to have it filled with space enthusiasts and, unfortunately, were in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. Our country has been through a lot but this is a unique moment where all of america can take a moment and look at our country do something stunning again. And that is launched american astronauts on american rockets from American Silver were going to go to the International Space station, and what we do there of course is to transform how we do spaceflight in general. The commercial crew program is, in fact, about commercializing lowearth orbit. We have resupply, now well have crew. Soon well have commercial space stations. This is unique opportunity to bring all of america together in one moment in time and say look at how bright the future is. Thats what this launch is all about and yes in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic we have taken extraordinary measures to keep our people safe and we are one day away from launch. This is an exciting day here thank you and alternate back to you. I would just echo what jim and bob had said. This is a historic milestone. The reality is that we in the past nasa developed, designed and built and operated spacecraft and rockets. This is the first time that a commercial company is building and going to operate this spacecraft and capsule. Were really looking to be a customer to space x and two other companies in the future. And thats what were trying to do is to create and expand, really expand the economy in lowearth orbit. Thats really what this is about tomorrow. Thank you. And our commercial crew comfort with nicole. Thank you so much. It is an incredibly exciting to be. People always ask what you like to be an Astronaut Office entry with folks that are flying on so many different spacecraft . We have soyuz come spacex, starliner and then we are already starting to lay the foundation for our ride. Its an incredible time to be training with all these different opportunities in front of us and were so proud and happy for doug and pop. It feels like one of your close family members having a great Lifetime Achievement and really thats what it is. On a personal level that is i think i could speak for the Astronaut Office and thats how we all feel. So proud for everything have accomplished with nasas space x team to get ready for this launch. Its so important because this is not just about one launch. This is launch in america. Its not launch nasa. It is launch america and its huge. My son is eight years old and so hes never seen americans launch from the United States ever. Its kind of foreign to them and as i was getting me to come on this trip today, or yesterday, he asked me, are we going to the men . Is this our first light to them in . I said, not technically but it is the first big step on our roadmap to the moon or the artist nation and eventually to mars. And he as a young boy sees this i know theres a lot of kids out there that will be watching the launch tomorrow and its just an exciting time for all of nasa come spacex and a proud moment for all of america. Aye nichols sentiments exactly. I echo. Commercial and Government Entities working together come spacex nasa to pull something off like this. And what a privilege to be here just a day away from launch. We are so incredibly excited to be a part of this. I had the opportunity to launch with our International Partners, dinesh space station back in 2015 and thats at the core of what were doing here today is to continue that incredible legacy of work weve done on the International Space station. We have had humans living and working on that horrible outpost for almost 20 years, conducting site and research to extend our presence in the solar system and to improve life back on earth. This launch represents an extension of that capability and having the ability to launch americans from an american soil on a u. S. Spacecraft is absolutely amazing. I think about my launch and the family, a few family and guests that i i still have out there o watch that. And i think about now so Many Americans in the future being able to congregate down here and watch this incredible vehicle take off here for people to live there in florida just to go out on their porches or to look up, parking lot and to see this vehicle claw its way into space, to watch americans flying into lowearth orbit and to the International Space station, and the power, the power of that to inspire our future generation of explorers and leaders. It is truly a privilege to be a part of this, to be able to witness this is stored moment and to see where this journey ultimately takes us. Antacid. With that will take our first question but before that just reminder if youre interested in what were doing today, watching the launch go to nasa. Gov be our guest to get more information on the virtual experience. Well take our first question. Ivan. Administrator, will can you confirm whether you will have a europeanrussian with him on that mission . The crew for the crew dragon for crew one has been selected. I dont think you on the crew, where you. Us not on crew one. I have the opportunity to back up both bob and doug and crew one, and i think the following crew, those assignments are still being processed. What was the second part . Yes. When will europeans or canadian are russians lie on crew dragon for the first time, do you expect . Thats undetermined at this point. I can tell you crew one, we will have japan with his come our First International partner on launching a falcon rocket. As first other International Partners, that is not yet been determined. Thank you. Our next question is from abc news. Yes, thank you. Can you talk to me about the go rosses to more. Who will be making those calls . Who will be here making those calls . So we have a Mission Management team that is working all the checks as a go through the process, and all along the way people can say no go if you need to but the the a final countdown to the launch where about 45 seconds out they will make a determination go or no go, and then we will go. Bob, did you want to add to the . It is a space x launch. Spacex is in the firing room floor in the Launch Control center through a partnership we have with them, and it will be a space x launch director that gives the final go after everybody is pulled in the nasa Management Team is going to be involved in watching closely. Our next question comes from marina of the atlantic. Hi, everyone. Thanks for your time and best of luck tomorrow. A followup to the question that was just asked now. I wonder if nasa personnel are allowed intervene and take over from spacex at any point during the mission if nasa fuels that it is necessary . Reacted to the question is yes. We of course are the customer here, and so we do. But look, our goal is to spacex be able to do missions one day without nasa do we want them to go get customers that are not asked. So we want to make sure that making decisions, but if we see something that we disagree with, certainly we have the right to intervene i dont see that being necessary, but at this point, but yes, we can intervene if necessary. Our next question comes from paul from upi. Yes, hello. I would like one of you to comment on the sort of builtin uncertainty of this mission in terms of the length of the mission. Anywhere from six to 16 weeks i believe. I know any manned spaceflight has uncertainty, but im wondering how much of the readiness reviews with over the astronauts training and uncertainty of that time period . Yeah, so theres a lot of things that go into this. Number one, we have to get her astronauts to the International Space station. Once they are there theres a lot of different elements that come into play as to when they come home. Remember, this is a test flight. The highest priority is to test the vehicle and get it home safely and then be prepared to launch crew one. Some of the things that go into the mix as to when theyre going to come home include the solar arrays for example. There is a limitation on the solar arrays of about 114 days, period. We cant go beyond that. Of course some engineers might argue that weekend as her on the space station will understand how the solar arrays are performing, but right now were looking at a limitation of 114 days for the solar arrays. Then we have to consider when we come back to earth where to make sure that the winds and the precipitation and lightning, all of those things create a metric, if you will, as to how safe it is to come home. And so we need to make sure with the right weather and if we have a good window to come home, remember, this is a test flight and as such if we have a good window to come home and are not necessary on the International Space station, we will be taking it. And then when we think about the other big parameter is when is crew one going to be ready . We are targeting august 30 for a launch of crew one. Thats what were working toward. What that means is that we can keep our astronauts on board the International Space station doing the maintenance of the i is as as well as doing the iss for a period of time knowing that they can be there probably entail early august. When you get the spacecraft home and we need to evaluate the spacecraft, collect all the data, make sure that it performed the way we wanted it to perform, then get ready to launch crew one. The big parameters of course are the weather, the solar arrays, when crew one is going to be ready. So there is a lot of flexibility built into the back end of this nation but thats intentional. I want to reiterate it is a test flight. The goal is to get into the International Space station, test the systems and get them home. If they can do more work than that while there on the iss certainly thats okay but this is a test flight. Thank you. Our next question comes from keith. I have a question as a member of the apollo generation. I know jim remember when we were kids we wanted to visit asmus did an nasa wind out of the way to tell us including what they ate. Yesterday there was a straightforward honest question what would after breakfast . Managers at another would get back to you. They found out the aston breakfast menus are not subject to disclosure. Is that really the answer . Had explained to sixthgrader and artemis generation we cant say what the astronauts are eating . Shouldnt there be more transparency in some of this . I dont think as far as transferred to go i can tell you what its like in the past. Astronauts get anything they want for breakfast. You got your choice, whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner. Its made to order. I can go to my personal experience on my first light. I heard some folks get spacex answered wanted to get i dont get airsick and so i had like a toasted english muffin and a cup of coffee because im addicted to caffeine. I was going easy one cremate at steak and eggs and hashbrowns and is poured hot sauce on and he didnt get sick but no, so they may not even have decide what they want for breakfast yet, tomorrow. Its hard to release what you dont know but im sure it will make a decision and it would get anything they want. Thank you. May be some of the astronauts would like to answer. I know kjell, what did you wait . With that anything we want as long as it was what was being served that morning. [laughing] i was kind of like you, director, that i wanted to take a little easy. I did know exactly how is going to react to being on orbit and so i went easy on the solids. I also got my hair share of coffee. We ate really well while we were in quarantine, but we didnt have the choice of what were going to eat and honestly i was so excited that delicate member what it is that we ate, but it was plenty and it was great for what we need to do that day. Of course that was absolutely. Will go to our next question, jackie with the times of london. Hello. Yes configure my questions for mr. Bridenstine. I wondered what you would say of what youve said that you can share to the two little boys about what the dads are doing and the significance of it . Thank you. I had hard time here and you. Those question about the children of the astra . Both astronauts are fathers saw wondered what you would say what you said that you can share with us to the two little boys about what the dads are doing and the significance of it . I would start by saying, ad they know this, the dads are heroes. American euros. They are laying the foundation for a new era in human spaceflight. Its an error in humans space flight were more space will be more available than ever before. We envision a future where lowearth orbit is entirely commercialized, where nasa is one customer of many customers, where we have numerous providers that are competing on cost and innovation and safety, but they are down costs, increasing access and were putting out a Business Model, a Publicprivate PartnershipBusiness Model that ultimately enables us to go to the moon, this time sustainably. In other words, will go to the men to stay. We love apollo. The apollo era was fantastic. The problem is that into. Now we have Artemis Program which was our sustainable return to the men named after archivist is the twin sister of apollo in greek mythology, and she was the goddess of the moon. This time when we go to the moon we get to go with all of america, a very diverse highly qualified Astronaut Corps that includes women. What bob and doug are doing is they are the final step in proving the success of a Publicprivate PartnershipBusiness Model that dries down cost and is going to enable us to go not just to the moon but to go sustainably with reusable landers to the surface of the moon and all of this ultimately is for purpose and that is to get to mars. When those little boys are 40 years old and we have a permanent presence on the moon and with astronauts on mars, they are going to know that their dads played a Critical Role in enabling not just this country of the world as we need International Partners to humanity going further into the solar system than ever before. Beyond that i would remind the children that their dads are both military aviators that serve the country. Yesterday was memorial day. We had an opportunity to reflect on the people who served this country and, of course, these gentlemen have done that as well. So they are heroes in so many different ways, but as i said when they arrived here at kennedy, im 44. Im about to turn 45, and when i grow up i want to be like bob and doug. Our next question comes from joey from reuters. Thanks for doing this. Question for Jim Bridenstine. Its been a long run to get to this point and am wondering how i guess has this commercial Crew Development to get crew dragon to the point shaped figure of the commercial space marketplace . And jim are hard, feel free to answer since you mention something of the same. Thanks. So this is an important milestone. We have been very successful with commercial resupply of the International Space station, now we have commercial crew tomorrow. Knock on wood. That would be a successful mission, and then we need to build commercial space stations and lowearth orbit. In order to create a market where these programs can be capitalized with Publicprivate Partnerships we need to prove that there is an economy or human activity and lowearth orbit, and thats what were using the International Space station for right now. And, of course, some of the most salient projects happening there that have been going on really for a
