CSPAN2 Rep. Liz Cheney Discussion With The Reagan Presidential Foundation July 12, 2024

Defense form and on the podcast. We appreciate it. A lot to cover today. So much is going on here in washington dc and across the country. That for our listeners many people know you you are the loan congresswoman from the state of wyoming. The daughter of Vice President. But you going in and out of washington dates back further than when her father became Vice President of course he was chief of staff during the Ford Administration then like you served in congress. Coming in and out of washington for a lifetime with Public Office or a Family Member and then going back . I feel incredibly blessed way to grow up into have the opportunity to see both worlds but certainly some of my earliest memories have to do with my mom and dad in their publichave serviceo when my das chief of staff for president forward back in the early seventies my sister and i were toyoung it would take us down to the white house on saturday mornings to have breakfast with him and as you can imagine his schedule was very busy. We would sit on the floor of his office in the west wing which is the chief ofin staff office at that time the very hightech nature of the tools the chief of staff had at s the ready i remember mary and i were so impressed with the wall with four televisions you can watch cartoons on every network simultaneously. Those are the days usually watch cartoons. See you have the white house and then the congress and during the reagan years like you in the Leadership Conference is that a fun place to be as well . Yes. That was the first taste that i had campaigning across wyoming is a family end walking in parades and handing out buttons to learn what it means to participate in the political process that First Campaign especially was wonderful memories my dad had his first heart attack. There was a period of time we werent sure if he would continue to wno run. My mom took over and we campaigned with her. It was a wonderful way to understand. To see your mom campaign of course as your father is recovering as wellth known. But to see a woman in that rol role, in that moment did you think i would do that . Its interesting. Mary and i were both so blessed to grow up with parents that are gender never even occurred to us would be an obstacle it was an issue not even discussed i remember growing up my mother was writing and teaching and one of the first things i read was an article that she wrote about Elizabeth Blackwell the first woman doctor in the United States. We knew we were willing to work hard enough we should not be denied opportunity because of our gender. It didnt even occur to us that being a woman would be an obstacle we were always expected to work hard and prove ourselves and we grew up knowing how important it was to fight for what isr right. So with the world of politics and policy when your father was in congress and campaigning as a family in wyoming and then later serving in the bush 43 department so how do you go from a family of politics then working in the policy world of foggy bottom . First of all for us the politics have been completely intertwined and i know we would sit around at the dinner table is kids that discussions were usually about what was happening in the world than. Politics is an important way to be sure you get the right policy in place so i have always seen that as intertwined i have also been very interested in focused on east. Ddle something that i became interested in the first time at ten or 1111 years old learning about king tie in history class but that worked on that throughout the years when i was in private practice working on business deals the International Finance corporation and then the state department actually wass my state one my second time during bush 41 working on the aid programs to the former soviet union and Eastern Europe and the wall came down. I want to get back to you are mentioning before that for you it was a matter of course as a woman to have Elective Office whether from wyoming or anyplace else was doable and reachable. Of course now we look at an election here in a few months. One of the areas of focus in your role through the republican conference in house leadership is thinking about getting republicans elected come november in the house and in particularic one focus is getting w women elected. Your colleague has been focused on it and a 197 republicans maybe 13 or women. So give me your n perspective on why that is the case and your thoughts about changing that number. First of all we have to do everything we can to get more republican women elected. Its not an accident the number is so low its important tohe remember facebook is really effective at targeting all women particularly looking across california if the tactics the democrats have put in place like ballot harvesting and others that particularly have helped to ensure in some places i think unfairly that women and men have been beaten. If those who are not familiar of the t nomenclature what they do to shape outcomes what does that reference . As an example young kim running in california we thought she was elected she won the election on election day but then as the absentee ballots came in and ballot harvesting democrats uses extensively with a have volunteers who basically go around and collect absentee ballots and make sure the people that may not know that they could vote frankly if they are not here legally or qualified they help to get them ballots and ensure that anybody can have any kind of access to an absentee ballot then they harvest those and collect them basically we believe you should only be able to vote if youre legally gaqualified so we have to clean up the voter rolls so people who are able to vote and are legally qualified dont to have their vote diluted by those who should not who are abusing the system. Host are you optimistic the number ofnu republicans womens will increase this election cycle . I am we have a tremendous number of wellqualified candidates across the board and its important that we not just select women because of course some women like aco that we need fewer of those types of members of congress i believe their views are dangerous. But we need to encourage women to jump in and encourage those who think they dont have the experience or expertise to take the leap to recognize how important it is to have their voice at the table. Another thing about republicans in the electoral process and the challenges is young people. Those trailing their opponent by 30 points in 2016. What arer your thoughts about getting that group of americans . The 18 or 29 yearolds to support and vote with that outlook the liz cheney . To make it has to do what frankly what Ronald Reagan spoke about and the idea what we need to make sure everybody in society can prosper is freedom and equality of opportunity and people to understand a fight against socialism is a fight fundamentally to if we canhe exercise the individual rights are constitution guarantees. It was so important historically that you lay out the terms of that debate and then explain what happens when nations adopt socialism. Unfortunately today summoning and people are attracted to the idea of socialism. Too many people view that as a more equitable way to organize society but it steals power from every single individual and gives it to the government and we need to do a better job at making those kinds of points so young people understand they are future to make decisions for themselves requires that we protect freedom and that cannot bereed done. Holding on to that point because something thats not wellknown or intuitive predicate on present reagan supports along the same demographics when he left office exported by samples by 90 percent he was old by the time he left office. We talked about and then to have a substantive approach also about their future is a key component of what they spokent about. How reagan looks that individuals do you think republicans you see running for office and focus seeing about freedom and also how that . There is a tendency people dont care about National Security reagan has done important pulling on these issues and i think thats wrong and dangerous for candidates too assume and our obligation is to ensure that we are facing a real choice i right now that International Global order those that have freedom and belief will looks likehat that or the Chinese Communist party and they will make that determination that is absolutely the battle right now young people when they see whatspl happening in hong kong and to the extent of which covid has disappeared we need to make sure people understand fundamentally this is not a moral equivalent its a situation where one power is totalitarian will oppress its people versus United States of america with those protest drifting and issues around read on race and is unparalleled around the world that also to reference the competition of political ideas for the idea of whats going on at home we have o protests around Police Brutality and racism so give me your take in terms of george floyd and how you as a member of congress will address that if at all in the us congress. First of all the killing of horrific andwas every one recognizes it terrific. What i think is moving is at several protesters when george floyd called out for his mother he summoned allor mothers. Dont think anyone is unmoved by that you cannot live in a society where mothers of black children have to worry they could find themselves killed by those who have to protect us its an issue we have to addres address. But i also think it is absolutely wrong for us to say we will condemn all Police Officers to say we will Defund Police is ludicrous. And what worries me good people decide they will not go into Law Enforcement. And then to have the resources we need and what has happened or who killed george floyd. As i government what we need to do is encourage transparency and dealing with recruiting issues. Theres no way somebody that had that many complaints against them before he joined the force and after should be on the force ator all. Let alone treating other officers. Exactly. There is no question that Police Officers around the country and thats important. But when i see things like graffiti and the attacks as i watched your building was broken into i saw that as that was happening on the live stream. Tt and that was all over the mall and world war ii memorial. And the rioting and alluding. And then to have black store owners and other minorities and then to sit and listen to each other in these issues and come together that kind of writing and taking advantage what is a really important moment for the country. And asking on the question and police and Law Enforcement and overwhelmingly 74 percent came up with police and Law Enforcement do you think of the trust and confidence in the police will alert to the point we had a problem . I hope not. I think a lot of this has to do to make sure we have this conversation in a way that reflects reality. And when you have to talk about whats going on in minneapolis and across the country the Police Department that is most effective are those that police with their community and Work Together and then to raise their families and that stores will not be looted. They want to know the Police Officer trying to protect a store from alluding and was killed in cold blood. All of Society Needs to come together to stand again so those Police Forces stand with those communities are most effective. So the Police Forces that are doing the right thing. The most important data how local communities view local police force. And then you wouldnt be reelected if that is the view of the country but if youre graded this is all going on amidst covid19. Every city and locality and the approach. And we have focused on china and the Chinese Communist party conducted themselves with the transparency to make there world aware of what will come with more than 100,000 americans and scores more across the globe. Talk about your take on covid1 covid19. First of all there has been a big debate whether or not the Chinese Communistov party , the government of china knowingly spread the virus. In my mind that question has been answered and if you recognize stopping travel from move on into the rest of china and allowed travel from move on into the rest of the world, they knew they had transmission from human to f human. And thats why they stopped into the rest of china but at that time thats the only answer that you need. We will continue to look at if it came from the wet market or the lab and all of those are important but in terms of culpability we know the answer causing economic devastation and 110,000 americans at this point have been killed. This is devastation. The rest of it. Exactly. And the Chinese Government made a very good calculation with transmission a new they would cause economic devastation and that the devastation would only had china and that they word rather be in a position frankly for that was spread globally not only affecting china negatively. And its only the latest example and the worst in the most damaging of the nature of that regime. And the ability those two expresses the World Health Organization certainly you are from your time in the congress and state department. But there is a lot of the criticism and add is complicit with the chinese narrative with respect to covid19. To make it funding or defunding. What is your take on the who and how we should or should not engage that those multinational institutions when they are complicit. With the Chinese Communist party. In this hugely incredible work even talking about covid talking about ebola and hivaids some things that who was expected to do before the era of covid and the problem is looking at what happened with covid is not that they are just pushing the storyline that it has prevented and pushing out the talking points coming out of china. And the things that turnoutur isnt true and that organization is supposed to save lives but took action. And then to hold these international organizationshold accountable. And anybody who spent time working at the United Nations as i did at the state department and there tends to be three anti american and bias. Your talk about thees professional workforce working for United Nations. Exactly. Then you get into and with the Human Rights Commission at the un but thef fact and those like libby on the Human Rights Commission tell you what type of organizations they have become. And with taxpayer dollars every year and with that Financial Support when they are not doing the job they were intended to do and then to bash america they are causing lives rather than saving them its important to have the who of some, kind and to track global pandemics so we can Work Together. But the government of china is working very hard and aggressively in many instances to see those secretary positions that are supportive of and are beholden to them. How do you all these institutions accountable for their conduct . Amidst covid . And china with respect to hong kong and then democratic that has been walked back by every account and its this covid pandemic and as an advocate of the us to maintain its leadership role in the world and as we discussed earlier with freedom and democracy so give me youran take on the us role. I think this is a crucially important issue. To the the nations of the free world there was no other country that can do that are will do that if you look at books i agree its not an accident that the last 75 years through unparalleled peace and prosperity and freedom but because the nation that was the most powerful on earth had the strongest economy and military was the United States of america which was fundamentally based and founded on the values of enlightenment and freedom. We are uniquely able to lead the world and we should because its right and necessary for continued security and prosperity. That idea is being tested today in the United States in our political debates and globally the government of china would love for people to believe democracy is toomo mess. Thats their line its too messy and too complicated you should throw in your lots with us in china going around the world blackmailing countries to accept infrastructure over huawai and 5g. Many countries now because of covid19 understand thats a deal with the devil and the tremendous cost entering into those arrangementsts with china the government has even then blackmailing over medical issues responding to covid. We have seen positive movement now from the government of the uk to recognize that they do allow huawai to play a role inn 5g come it will put at risk intel sharing with them and now covid has laid bare absolutely the nature of that regime. Something that really stands out with respect to china and the us views and leadership in the world is the poll that we did at the end of last year almost 70 percent of americans 68 percent support the prodemocracy movement in home, in hong kong but that was before covid19. Something the president would be surprised to hear and that others may not believe or think thats a role for america but you have america support standing by maybe they dont support boots on the ground but rhetorically on the economic front, there seems to be very strong support. I think it is bipartisan. When you look at what america has stoo
