CSPAN2 Liberty University Conference Panel On Chinas Influence In America July 12, 2024

Of the true heroes of. In the Society Today sadly. Of the two warriors on the topic these gentlemen have been battling this topic ther their e careers and their entire lives. Both sacrificed greatly as i like to quote with their lives and military service. There wasnt quite enough to get up for the country i and that ty wanted to u then go even further and give the gift of their time and talent and sacrifice in our congress fighting on the issue, fighting communism. I wanted to use as the wife of a former senator there are issues you can take on and be a hero and issues you caner take on a takes courage and fortitude and personal sacrifice. This issue is an issue that if you are going to takeue this on, your family is going to be hit, your family, you will be hit personally on a daily basis. That is the beginning of things that are going to happen as you take on thepe issue that these o courageous men have taken on and so thats why it is truly an honor to get to introduce two of the bravest we have among us in today. Untry they are the hope for our businesses, the hope for our children and their future and to the hope for the continuation of our republic in this United States of t america. Welcome representative jim banks and ken krenshaw. I want to start by just opening up to whoever would like to take it first. In passing, what is your statement on the f culpability f chinas moral responsibility to its googo to you first, congres. First and foremost, there is more on the classified as having what they can say is we can get hung up on whether or not the coronavirus was intentionally released and thrust upon in the world and to destroy and affect farm on americans or we could puput that discussion aside from what i prefer to do. What they know a we know at thee day we know that by preventing the cdc and who in january from coming in to study at the beginning of the outbreak by refusing to allow two International Organizations to study those some of the National Securityty adviser says 90 of cases of covid19 would have been avoided if we could have gone in in january when they tried to investigate to better understand it. That alone is by china is more legal trouble and why they should be held accountable for the spread of the coronavirus. Back in 2005, china and the United States and a number of countries around the world signed on to and International Health regulations with the un to stop the spread of the pandemic that you hearken back he that and look at what they are dealing with now, they violated the regulations they sign on to in 2005 and should be held accountable for it and right now they are not. I fear what thats going to look like after this next election if things change and we go back to an era in american politics where we turn a blind eye not just to the coronavirus but a lot of other activities on the part of the Chinese Communist party where we dont hold them accountable. I want to get to that because this is an educational, not a political event at not beingti political, there are two candidates and both of them have played out the binary plans not only that but they demonstrated ntas a part of the Obama Administration they had a very distinct policy and plan for the ccp and President Trump has taken a completely different plan. I want to get to that. But i want to move to you and talk aboutut what should, what s the price that china should have to pay a portion of the reprisal be for what happened . I wantf to add a couple thins as well to what jim said. China knew there was a virus. They cut off travel but not internationally. I agree we could question their intent, but we do know their actions. Aey did all ou allow it to sprd they also spread misinformation through the context of the World Health Organization and even just recently they wouldnt allow scientists to investigate the origins of the virus. There is more than that. They presented exports of ppe as well. No one should be the price of that and that is where the discussion rather complicated. We need a realignment and a change in paradigm. We need to view them for what c they are. Its an adversarial relationship. Its not quite like the a cold r where you can argue they wanted to see that. I dont think that is part of china necessarily wants. The economies are closely intertwined that they want to spread their domestic outlook onto the world is we have a global order thats been protected. The chinese want to replace that with a system with an authoritarian regime run by them so thats how they operate domestically and i think they want to export that internationally. Thats whatn the crude initiatie is. Its an initiative that allows the marketbased system to work, but the rules of the road they wantnt to dictate. B w need to be fully consciousf that and when you look at the difference between joe biden and trump, he was in office for quite a long time well before i was born and he is part of this notion we should help the rise and if we do that they would enter the order in a responsible way and adhere to our values that is simply not true and its certainly not fair to me that biden for one has realized that. Going back to the culpability and responsibility on this before, whacovid, what should thd what price should they pay specifically, what does that look like to prevent the next pandemic . I have a bill that would make them pay a price. It allows u. S. Citizens to use our court system to sue china for damages. In reality what does that look like, it looks possibly like a class actioaclassaction lawsuis Class Action Lawsuit that was after their state enterprises. Do i expect them to write us aoe big check, no i do not but its the one thing among many that we can do. We need to in bridge these investigations and come up with creative ideas. It isnt a simple answer how do we make them pay. Again thats why i reverted to the broader discussion it is competing with them on multiple fronts of intellectual property theft which cost him the consulate in my district in houston that is being used to spy on the Texas Medical Center tose get access to the technologies are now they want to make money on the virus they were hiding from everybody, so we absolutely need to hold them accountable. Ol what degree of hope should we expect from our allies on this . Last week secretary pompeo gave what i believe is the most significant speech hes given to in his timthem his time in the p administration. Of course at the Richard Nixon library which is symbolic in and of itself, as the president opened the i door to lead to the to normalizing relations with china. In that speech, he talked about leveraging our allies abroad and creating a coalition of the free world versus communist china not just the effort to hold them accountable but the realignment of the dam washi talking about much in the same way we formed coalitions around activities in iraq andoa afghanistan. Its time we begin to build that coalition of western countries who believe in western values. If you boil this down, its the repressive authoritarian regime and values of the Chinese Communist party versus the free and open Democratic Values of the United States of america and most of u our allies. Thats the dividing line. What dan is describing whether we have incredible significant examples in recent months im from indiana and we love basketball and i cant tell you how sick to stomach it made me feel when theow leadership and many of the best basketball players of the day groveled to china and the Chinese Communist party values versus the values of the country that they come from. Those powerful examples to show heu what they are up against. Will the next be one that is governed by american interests or wealthy old subject ourselves to what lebron james had so many others have and chasing the almighty dollar and the interest of what china wants us to believe in, that is what they are up and cannot allow to happen and why the secretaries speech delivered last week this Administration Bottom line is the only administration in my lifetime that have sought to be tough on china for tougher trade deals, building up our military in a way that could combat chinese military. This administration in its very first year released the National Security strategy that called for Great Power Competition with china and getting ourselves out of other we both agree what is going on in the middle east wasnt just important yesterday and today that for a long time to come. To build up a militarye. That cn combat the china threat in a way that our military over the last decade or th are the last genern hasnt been able to do, so that powerful statement rallying our owallies to join us on that endeavor is something significant that we shouldnt losein sight of. Yo good point how a do we classify whatever it is we are engaged in if it is a war, informational, technological, is its medical. We know that theres a lot of battle on that front. Geat is it that they are engaged in and how do you classify it flex they call it Great Power Competition at least they did in 2017 andwe since then as this administration builds upon that, this administration it seems all of us feel like weve been through a long movie the last four years. Where we are today with secretary pompeo, National Security adviser obrien, this president has surrounded himself with the leading minds of the time to understand the greatest existential threat we face today is china, economically and militarily. Is interesting and i want to stop you for just one second to address that. If youou watch the news today on any network perhaps the one i work for and very few other exceptions youll hear the greatest threat to todays russia, not china, so continue. I goes Mainstream Media outlets will tell you that its the president of our own country sadly. And hes the only president in my lifetime that identified the true threat that we face. We cannot fight and win the new cold war if we aree constantly engaged in the civil war we are engaged in in american Society Today. Thats what im concerned about and while i understand the challenges and restrictions we have to talk about politics, the election in november is all about whether we will continue down the path of recognizing the greatest threat we face in china or whether we retreat not just the Obama Administration of republican administrations, too who have turned a blind eye to the threat, whether allowing them to join the wto or altogetherer ignoring their violations of Many International laws and stealing our jobs and thrusting the coronavirus on us without ever being held accountable for it. I think the best way to describe it as a conflict of visions. We have a different vision on how to govern. Ours is one where people are allowed to self govern freely, choose their own a government ad pursue their own happiness. Thats a particular vision where human nature can be set by Democratic Institutions that you cannot fundamentally change the nature of man. Addition of chinese is different. They do believe in the ability to form human nature and create a collective into any basically means justify those ends. You can see it now they are putting them in concentration camps, shaving their heads. That is an instancthe present iw where our customs seized a bunch of human hair that was being shipped to make air raids. Its horrible what is happening and just because they have a totally different vision of humanity, they have a different vision for civilization and they want tohu export that. This is the conflict on how they perceive the freedom of the individual. What scares me the most. What are we seeing right now in america. The progressive belief is a topdown belief that people should think the way they want them to and people should speak the way they want them toy and again is justify the ends because theres something type of utopia they are trying to achieve. Now it has a pretty bad history and humanity and always results in a lot of peoples deaths. They are basically just reenergizing the same kind of vision and again when you talk about it again its kind of people are susceptible to it especially young people because deep down they are good and one to achieve Something Better that what they fail to understand is for success that created america and economic freedom, personal freedom of rights, the culture of rights. That is something only we have in america. There is no public rights in Great Britain or w even canada. Their freedom of speech can be trampled on. Ours cannot be by law. Thats a different discussion but at least we have a culture of rights and we are losing that to this conflicting vision and the chinese are happy to perpetuate that. Its not to say russians are not a threat. They are good at this Information Warfare because theyve been doing it for a long time, playing out this conflict of interest game for a century. They are very good at it. The chinese are Getting Better at it did we need to be going into this race wide open. When you talk to people about this topic which you must obviously have to do every single day, when you have the opportunity to try to pick them up, what is that like in that moment . Because i feel like so much of ce country is asleep on this. Its technical, they dont understand the geopolitics. You cant really hearken back because they dont really know what they are talking about. You cant even go back as far as world war ii because they dont really know that history. So how then do you wake up the population that doesnt understand history or the geopolitical situation or really understand the constitution, what does that light bulb look like . That is a milliondollar question and why we are in such a difficult battle becausequ if they another generation of teaching the right principles to counter generations of teaching the wrong principles. That we dont have the time so where do we as in all can start today . In your individual know, askons, you questions of the person i you ae trying to persuade somebody and in that persons demeanor and how they are coming at it and which misconceptions they already have built into their mind it depends. What i find this to do is to simply ask the questions you wish theywish a reporter wouldi. Dont confront them with your ideology because what does somebodsomebody do, they automay ett defensive and its hard to change somebodys mind. The facts do not matter at a certain point once you are emotionally attached to an argument commits are hoping to,n through the method is generally speaking my best advice without knowing the context of the particular conversation. My best advice on how to persuade somebody, but it takes work. Thats why i say it is a generational battle. I find where i come from people do get it. I dont have to educate them about it because farmers in northeast indiana have seen what bad trade deals with china have done to the supermarkets. Where i come from we have more manufacturing jobs per capita in my district to ban any in the country. We make ours, medical devices and businesses every day that have experienced either themselves or someone in the supply chain has experienced ip theft. So working class hardworking middleclass families in my district have seen china recovered on the economy. This is when donald trump was elected in 2016 to begin with and why he got over 70 of the vote in a district like mine, which is one of these bluecollar type districts hes always done well in and the eni think because of this issue. Today most of theso same people are setting up onn the thing why arent we doing enough to hold them accountable for what they are suffering from at the moment and i dont have a lot of things about the administration buthato wish that this administration would rise up and be tougher to hold them accountable for the coronavirus of 3. 5 trillion is added to our National Debt already thats going to grow in the weeks andad months to come d for the longterm damage thats been done to so many working class people seem their wages scaledback for their lives have been disrupted in a substantial way. They want i want this president t they votethey voted for on the m of Holding China accountable to do exactly that right now for what they are going through today. I want to hear you both layout again this is an educational summit, but i want to hear you both layout what this looks like in terms of you know, joe biden has been in Public Office foros almost 50 years so we have a long record to look at. We have a recent president s give donald trump so we know what that looks like. If joe biden is elected, what does that relationship with china look like and ifoe presidt trump is re elected, what does that relationship look like and what does that mean in terms of real lives, real americans, real families in the midwest and in texas, what does this mean to the average american and i want to hear both i but if you speako that. The answer is simple. Thewe have a 50 year framework f what it would look like. Joe biden and senator and later Vice President was at the helm when we normalize relations and allowed them to enter the wto when we largely turned a blind eye toward china cheating economically from steel dumping to a lotin of other bad trade practices that did a lot of damage to the american economy, so we could assume joe biden in the whit white houses white hoy different than joe biden and senator Vice President. Donald trump on the other hand turned everything upside down. From the moment he was elected, whether it was negotiating a new trade deal which has been most forgotten that the merits or so fundamentally important and expecting more and demanding more from our trade deals with china to what hes done to build a better relati
