Those statements that have been made. My concern is some of the degree well be leaving this their take you live to due doubt, minnesota, where president ial candidate joe biden is holding a campaign event. This is live coverage on cspan2. Welcoming to us this appraising Apprenticeship Program and im excited to be here with senator klobuchar and Vice President biden. We are heres because we fund when the people can organize for better working conditions, better wages, safer places to work, thy do better, their family does better and everybody in this country does better. From what ive learned from people in minnesota is they want the freedom and opportunity to build the lives they want and they know that good jobs and their labor unions help them to do that. So think about what is happening here in this amazing apprenticeship facility that the Vice President has had a chance to tour that is doing great work. It is creating pathways for people to have good jobs and good careers with pensions and this is so important for making this country work and making peoples lives work. We know what to do to make this country work for everybody. Not just those at the top. It involves making sure that wages are good. We need a 15 an hour minimum wage, need to make sure we have paid family and medical leave and we need to make sure that when people work hard and they pay in, that they can count on their pensions being the. And this is a real challenge. Talked to folks in duluth who told me that they had done everything right, theyd worked on weekends, worked on holidays, paid interest their pensions and now theyre being told that the pensions might not be there. Think about that. A woman said to me, tina, i dont have a plan b. I dont have another thing to do here. So one of the things im so proud to stand with Vice President biden on, and senator klobuchar, extending standing up for the rights of people to have the pensions they earned. As we think about this most important election theres no doubt about who is standing with working people in minnesota and all across the country, and that is Vice President biden. And that is where i stand as well in this most Important Senate election. Now, a couple of days ago, Vice President biden said, i think this campaign is a choice between whether youre from scranton or park of knew. Is this campaign pout scranton or park avenue and i know which side i come down on issue come down on scranton and the side of Vice President paid. So thank you for being here. Im excited to be part of the celebration of the hard work and what the hard working deliver for families in terms of the opportunities to build the lives they want. Thank you so much. [applause] and now, senator amy klobuchar. Hello, everyone. Its wonderful to be here. Thank you to the carpenters for hosting us. Thank you to my friends, tina smith, who is doing such great job, and im so proud to have her as a colleague and a friend, real friend. People say friend in washington all the time but for us its true. And then also to be here and welcome back Vice President biden to northern minnesota. He has been here with me. Hes been up here with our steelworkers and been up here because he did some great work on Domestic Violence and came to duluth to talk about it and now here with the carpenters. I was just talking to the Vice President back stage, and recounting my background here. I think you all know, my dad grew up in northern minnesota, my grandpa was a miner, worked 1500 feet unground his entire lymph never got to dad what from medicalled school or high school because he had nine brothers and sisters and i was unions that made by grandpas life safer. My dad still remembers those bodies in the Catholic Church at st. Anthonys in eli because it wasnt safe. Even when my dad was growing up that was happening, and the unions pushed for safer rules, and they pushed for better wages, and its one of the only reasons im standing up here today. So we know theres Something Else going on in our country and we need someone to have our back. Im sick and tired of hearing donald trump say that he somehow making us more safe. Well, were not safe when we have a pandemic raging across our country. Where i go visit my dad who is now 92 at an assisted living and he has covid and im looking at him through a glass door like i was two months ago and i dont know if ill ever see him again. Thats not safe. And its not safe when people are scared economically and they dont know if theyre going to have their job back. What i love but joe biden and my friend, kamala harris, theyre looking not just how to get through the pandemic and looking at the day after tomorrow, and how were going to train our workers, what jobs we have available now, and what jobs we have available in the future. And we need a president who will fight for those who have lost their jobs because this administration is selling American Workers out when we need to buy american work. Way need a president who will fight for the people and workers of northern minnesota, not go town do maralago and tells all his rich friends after he passes a tax bill, you just got a lot rich. I dont think one person in minnesota was in that room in florida when he said that. We need a president who knows we dont have a shortage of ceos. We have a shortage of plumbers. We have a shortage of construction workers. We have a shortage of people that build things, that really build things. Joe biden is going to be a pratt for all of america and i was so proud endorsing him after starting my campaign in the middle of a blizzard in minnesota i got a chance to end it by endorsing joe biden. It was the obamabidens a marges that came up here in the face of Dennis Mcdonough and made sure we did something about chinese steel dumping. We passed news and a number of our iron ore mines reopened. That was their administration. If you are worried but you family and jobs you have a home with joe biden. Of if youre worried but cost of prescription drugs or childcare you have a home with george floyd if your worried but the divide is in country and having a president that just keeps adding more fuel to the name flames you have a home with videos because he wakes up everything morning and thinks how can i leafed this country and bring people together. So luckily just like the carpenter we are innovate afraid to roll up our sleeves. I have this vote mask because this the first day of early voting in minnesota. So lets go out there, lets vote, lets roll up our sleeves and get to work. And elect joe biden as president of the United States. Thank you very much. [applause] and now please welcome carpers Training Institute executive director. Thank you. Id like to work all of you to the carpenters Training Institute. Our mission here is to prepare our 2500 registered apprentices for a successful career as a professional in the construction industry. We provide continuing education for all of our membership. Our partnering contractors rely on the continue success of our programs and our members in order to thrive. On behalf of North CentralStates Regional Council of carpenters and our membership id like to think Vice President joe biden for taking more time to learn about what the member inside our region do and also hear what issues are important to us. Without further delay its my pleasure to introduce Vice President joe biden. Hello, minnesota good to be back. As amy was saying ive been here a number of times up in the iron range and its a magnificent part of the world, magnificent part of the world. I want to thank you so much, aimy, senator, you have been a great friend and a great, great senator, and senator smith, your Something Else. I tell you what. Thank you for the job youre doing, and im counting on it continuing another six years. I know youre both fighting around the clock to take care of minnesotans who are hurting. We have everything from covid to unemployment to a country that is divided along these being divide along racial lines, institutional racism, a whole range of things, and the people of minnesota know that they have two of the best senators in the country on their side. And, matt, thank you so much for that introduction and for showing me around today. This incredible Apprentice Program here at the Carpenters Training center. What people dont know if theyre not involved in labor apresent is apprenticeship trainers training the best people in the world but they get paid while theyre doing it, getting paid not full became but wage but getting paid and thats why these union Apprenticeship Programs are so incredibly important to stay this way. It matters. People who still make it while theyre learning a trade. The trade thats going to put them in good stead the rest of their lives. It was great to see some of the practical handson experience that apresenceties and journey men and women here receive, and while is a said earning a wage as a benefit. Its a bit quieter here because of covid19 restrictions but the pride of these workers who are learning the skills that we are carry them throughout their career is unmistakable, my father this warns saying every time, my dad used to have an expression, he said, joey, a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. Its about your dignity. Its about respect. Its about your place in the community. And being able to look your kid in the eye and say, honey, its going to be okay, and mean it. Thats the lesson ive never forgotten. Its the way i grew up surrounded by hard working families in scranton, pennsylvania, and a lot of steelworkers in delaware, all chose to jobs are gone, thats what i saw here at this training center. Dedicated women and men, investing anywhere dignity. In their dignity. Here in the iron range, we can see the resilient and grit of communities that built americans, the metal theyre made of and fortified by at the strength of union power, worker power. I income i was saying to you, matt, that my dad had at expression, the an way to deal with abuse of power is with power and the only real power for workers in america is union power. Youre the folks who keep the bare barians on the other side barbarians on the other side of the gate from making sure people can earn a decent living. But times are hard. Unemployment is way up due to the pandemic, few workers can be on the job at one time in order to abide by social distancing rules and the Economic Outlook for next year, including for the Building Trades is more uncertain than it need be. Here in minnesota and across the country there are plenty of folks who are hurting. Theyre worried about making their next mortgage payment, keep thing rent payments in check. They see the people at the top of the heap doing very well. Billionaires in america during this pandemic made another 300 billion. Hear what i just said . In the middle of the pandemic, left to wonder as a consequence ordinary folks who is looking out for me . That has been the spire story of Donald Trumps presidency and now in the midst of this unprecedented national crisis, trump has given up on even pretending to do his job. Almost 200,000 lives lost in the last six months, and experts telling us now that the same studies have relied on the administration has relied on to predict what is coming next, that well lose another 215,000 lives between now and january 1st. The United States has lost has another 36,000 new covid cases per day. Per day. Another average thousand deaths a day. Just across the border, a stones throw into canada, one day earlier the United States had a thousand deaths of covid, canada had zero. Just two days ago, three days ago i believe it was. America hat 1,200 deaths, and canada had nine. Nine. So many lives lost unnecessarily because the president s only worried about the stock market and his reelection. Refused to do what youre doing right here in this program. Social distance. Wearing masks, sanitize. Youre protecting your apprentices. Hayes not protecting america. Its estimated by the scientist if we just wore masks nationally wed save 100,000 lives between now and january 1st. Say that again. If we just wore masks nationally, we would save 100,000 lives between now and january according to the same study. Its statemented by a great medical school, columbia medical schools if the president just started one week earlier in march than he did, we would have 36,000 more people sitting at a dinner table tonight or being able to put your arm around grandpa or grandma tonight. And again, in otherwise own words, recorded by bob woodward, the president knew back in february that this was an extremely dangerous communicable disease. Think about that. How many people across the iron range, how many empty chairs around the dinner tables . Because of his negligence and selfishness. How many lies said and lives lost. Imagine if he had just maybe on the state of the union, spoke up and said we have problem but a we can handle it. Heres what we got to do. I cant think of any president who has ever acted in my view so selfishly. About his own reelection instead of his sworn obligation to protect the American People. Ailes said last night any home town this campaign is between scranton and park avenue. All trump sees from park avenue is wall street and thats would why the only met trick for american prosperity for him is the value of the dow jones. I spend guys with my life at donald trump looking down on me. Looks down on the people who make a living with their hands, people who take care of our kids. Clean our streets, maybe what bothers me most is the way he talks about reported too many sources confirmed by many outlets, talked but men and women who joined the military and gave the full measure for their country as suckers. And losers. Unless you think its made up, remember how the talk but john mccain. I did his eulogy. John mccain was no sucker or loser. He was 0 hero. My son, who volunteered and spend a year in iraq, won the bronze star, he wasnt a loser. A sucker. He was a proud patriot. The guys thought they were better than me, better than us, because they had a lot of money. Guys inherit everything theyve got still manage to squander. I have to admit and this obvious relative to trump, i just have a little bit of my a little bit of a chip on my shoulder about these guys. Recently probably shouldnt said it last night but i did, recently i read some stories and was asked questions bit a leading columnist that went like this. If you get elected youll be the first guy in a long time elected president without an ivy league degree. Like somehow . Kid went to a state university, didnt qualify to be float newt without an evey league degree . Let me tell you something. I know how to do the job of being president. Its pretty clear. No matter how wealthy donald trump is no matter how much he doctors his if he does his tax returns, he doesnt have a clue how to be president. Now the American People see these women and men, essential workers, workers in the middle of these crises, who deliver the food, farmworkers, nurses at risk their lives and in many cases gave theirlives to save other people. Essential workers. And when they walked down the street people, and hands and walked together, tell them how much they are appreciated , thats not enough. Theyre asking for a shot. And i remind you given a shot the americanpeople have never ever let the country down. So its about time we start to pay essential workers for the fact that they are essential. Blinders have been taken off the American People. I think theyre ready. Theyre ready to insist on a minimum wage and 15 anhour. Theyre ready to insist that people have child care and access to it. Theyre ready to admit and understand the needs that africanamericans have thats why my bill backbetter plan, in fact my entire campaign is built on the core concept. Its time to reward hardworking america, not wealth. Reward work, not wealth. We dont have to penalize wealth. But its the opposite now. Reward wealth and not work. Were out to rebuild the economy in the wake of covid19 and as we do we have an Incredible Opportunity to make long overdue investments for working families. And make sure the wealthy, very wealthy and the corporations finally again to pay their fair share. Were not looking to punish anybody. Just pay your fair share. Its time we give hardworking families who built the country for skills and their sweat and their blood like the united brotherhoodof carpenters and joiners a leg up for once. I have a big ambitious plan that abets an American Worker its going to create millions of good paying american jobs Building Products and technologies we need now and in the future. And it starts with the basic idea. When the government spends taxpayers money, we should spend that money to buy American Products made by American Workers in an american supply chainto generate american growth. And opportunity. My flan plan would tighten the rules to make by american reality. During my first term alone were going to invest 400 billion of federal money. To invest and purchase products and materials our country needs to modernize infrastructure. Replenish critical stockpiles. To enhance our national security. I just talked to an Apprentice Program with one of your carpenters thats showing me how to read blueprints and find a frustrated architect. I just love rolling my kids years ago awhiteboard. I have no professional training but i like and i carried around a graph paper and im always making up and designing homes and landscapes. Its my way out
