I am robert costa of the Washington Post was welcome back to the postelection daily show. We launched this show just yesterday so you could have up to the minute news at 1 00 pm eastern. Im joined by Newt Gingrich who is a strong supporter of donald trump, and attorney general eric holder has been working on redistricting for years now with president obama, and advocating for democratic nominee joe biden. To to my network a bit of the headlines, paying attention to in the final days, and an that is the focus once again. And and going to broward county, i will talk to you about that and Voter Suppression issues, florida is in the 5 days to go, shows you it is in play. A new poll shows Vice President biden is ahead narrowly 51 with likely voters, donald trump is 47 of likely voted. That is in the pauls margin a. Pennsylvania, unrest, Deadly Police shooting of a black man in philadelphia, Vice President biden seized on the news in pennsylvania rising number of coronavirus cases, if you succeeded 200,000 in that state. In the final days a competing narrative from the trump side, law and order, Vice President biden is being critical of any writing and looting, swinging the spotlight in pennsylvania on the pandemic. He is speaking to suburban voters and urban voters with that kind of message. Immigration, cant forget about that. Vice President Biden knows it is key to get the latino vote and beyond the latino vote suburban people paying attention to the issue as well. Think about children being separated from their families, biden has announced a task force in the headlines, and real quick, Vice President ial candidates, senator harris reaching out to historically black universities, mike pence is in iowa making sure evangelical voters come out speaking to conservative voters in nevada. I want to bring in eric older, former attorney general, the chairman of the redistricting committee, welcome to the program. You are tracking Voter Suppression and redistricting efforts across the country. Lets start with Voter Suppression. The concerns i have overwhelming enthusiasm by the American People but i also note studies have shown of your africanamerican you are 7 times more likely to wait in line over one hour, i am concerned about that, the measures being taken by the Republican Party to keep people away from the polls and they are going so far as to say they dont want to count all the votes that have been cast. There have been lawsuits in texas by republicans to take the votes that have been cast by people who drove up in their cars and not count those votes. It strikes me as a major differentiator, democrats want as many people to vote as possible, republicans want to restrict the number of people. And that is inconsistent with who we say we are as american democracy. We remember ten years ago covering this at the post republican sweeping across not only congressional races but statehouses. I democrats going to do better this time in winning state seat and state legislative seats. Good question. I think quite frankly democrats focus on state legislative races to the extent we should have in 2010. As a result 2011 redistricting went well for the republicans and led to the gerrymandering that has affected our politics, focusing on statelevel races, around the country, this is an exit essential president ial election focusing on down ballot races, a greater impact on your life on a daytoday basis, where decisions are made on womens reproductive rights, criminal justice reform, healthcare decisions will come from states. A variety of things from state as opposed to the federal government. Can you be more specific which states do you believe democrats will do the best in in the state level . I think we will do in a bunch of states because of work weve done, independent commissions drawing the lines. We will do well in michigan, north carolina, texas, ohio, pennsylvania. There have been structural changes to make the vote more fair this time. To the extent we have concerns in 2010 and those replicated in 2020. My sources tell me on the democratic side, they are concerned, white voters casting ballots at a higher rate than black voters. What explains that and what does that mean for this campaign . Support and enthusiasm by africanamerican voters. Joe biden and Kamala Harris but also as a reaction to the efforts to suppress the vote in the Africanamerican Community. I have not seen those reports. Im confident we will see a robust turnout in the Africanamerican Community but around the country. You believe the Biden Campaign is fully prepared by the postelection fight in the courts . I think we are. I hope it doesnt come down to a fight postelection in the courts. I think we can avoid that by simply counting all the votes was i think they will be a winner and there will be a decisive winner but it comes down to a court battle, we have lawyers at Campaign Headquarters and around the country. Im working with groups who are interested in these issues to coordinate to the extent we can so we have legal bases covered. What about the doj . You were attorney general of the United States. Look at william barr, how do you believe he is positioned for this election . Did anything concern you . Gives me a great deal of concern. The Justice Department and the republican as well as democratic attorneys general been a player for fairness, posted monitors around the country in places you expect to see problems. I dont expect that from the Justice Department this time. Of the Justice Department were neutral that would be a bit of a disappointment not focusing on fairness. This attorney general has weapon is the Justice Department in service to the president that appointed him and that gives me a great deal of concern. How has he weapon iced . Coming out for doing things consistent with the president s best political interest, interfering in cases that put supporters of the president at risk with regard to the manafort stone, people like that, the way in which theyve taken positions in election cases. A whole variety of ways this attorney general has put the Justice Department on the side of the president as opposed to the people. Your friend and ally president obama was in florida earlier this week. Where do you believe he should go in the final few days of this campaign . I think he is getting a few things off his chest. That was interesting to watch. He should go where he needs to be, certainly florida, the industrial midwest will require some attention toward the end of the election process. Democrats are suffering ptsd from 2016 and dont want to repeat what is perceived to be a mistake by not devoting attention to michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania. Pennsylvania is a critical state but i dont think we should forget michigan and wisconsin as well. What is your assessment of the Postal Service at this moment and its ability to monitor, to manage all the ballots coming forward . The Postal Service has been crippled. As i said in a tweet yesterday or the day before people need to not use the Postal Service, rely on the Postal Service to get their mail in ballots to the balloting places on time. There has been a deliberate attempt by the Trump Administration and the postmaster general to decrease the ability of the Postal Service to handle this Record Number of mail in ballots. Firstclass mail deliveries are down well below 90 which is an acceptable rate. Theyve been successful in what they have tried to do. I hope they will be held accountable for what they have successfully done but now is not a time to rely on the mail to get your ballots in on time. On the Voter Suppression question, the physical activity at polling places and intimidation, what about people who are concerned their mail in vote might not count because they made a mistake on the envelope, didnt fold something correctly, how could that affect the final ballot . I dont know the extent to which this will be a problem but it is something that gives me concern. It is why we filed lawsuits in a variety of cases to make sure ballots dont get tossed for crazy reasons, signature matches. How many can see her signature has remained constant over the course of your life . To make sure people are doing the right thing, in pennsylvania the problem with naked ballots, not putting your ballot in the security envelope, a whole body of things with the mail in ballot process, perhaps of not done and that gives me concern that ballots are legitimately filled out for technical reasons might not be counted. Im worried about that. You have seen the rise of militia groups, threat on different democratic governors. Is that a permit of justice under donald trump doing enough to address that threat . Depends on what part of the Justice Department you are looking at. If you look at the fbi, director ray rightly called out the problem with white supremacist groups, militia groups of primary concern. Ive not seen the same rhetoric from the attorney general, the Deputy Attorney general. They have been notably silent when it comes to that. For great faith in the men and women of the Justice Department, i think these problems will be handled by tone of acceptance must be spread expressed by the leaders of this nation. I expect to hear the president come out against what militia groups have done in michigan, expect to hear that also from the attorney general. Theyve not given voice to the extent they should. If joe biden wins the white house, should he retain chris ray as fbi director . I dont see a reason why director ray should not finish the term. Those terms are there so you have stability at the fbi so you dont have what we have with director hoover, i dont see any reason anybody lost faith in the job he has done. He tried to navigate that which was thrown at him by the president , criticism that has come this way. I support his nomination and dont see any basis to hold him on. Do you support the effort to prosecute donald trump potentially if he loses the election out of office . Something we have to consider. A look has to be taken, the cases that might be against him, not least involving Michael Cohen where the president was individual number one, the determination that has to be made. Accountability has to be a guide. What would the impact be for the prosecution of a president , a nation that wants to heal, a new administration that wants to enact programs would that be a distraction so this, between accountability and the desire to move on . Where do you lean in that sense . Given the breadth of corruption weve seen in the Trump Administration i tend to lean towards accountability, not only with regards the president but those who serve within the administration and abused their office. Of joe biden wins are you open to returning to a cabinet position . That is something i havent considered. I suspect the Vice President and the new Vice PresidentKamala Harris have their eyes on new folks to serve in the cabinet. Final thing, you were probably watching the final debate. In recent days joe biden talked about his regrets on immigration during the obama years, do you share his regrets about not being able to enact comprehensive Immigration Reform . I would not call it regret. People have to remember bipartisan bill came from the United States senate and the people behind that deserve credit. It took political courage. That never got a vote in the house of representatives, john bain are never put that before the house, they knew it would have passed the Freedom Caucus prevented it from being presented. I regret that comprehensive Immigration Reform was not acted upon. It could have been acted upon but republican failures in the house prevented occurring. To the extent i have any regret, the leadership, the needed leadership in the house of representatives. If you are not running the cabinet life, who do you think biden should pick as the next attorney general . He has a lot of good choices. Somebody who has a degree of familiarity with the department, dont think this is the time for people learning on the job or someone who will meet the moment or deal with the civil unrest that engulfed our nation. The need for enhanced Justice Department protecting right to vote. The outcome of that experience to meet the moment and would be politically savvy. A lot of things will be shown at the next attorney general, fair and unfair that will require some degree of political acumen. No name mentioned, we believe it there. Appreciate your time and come back sometime soon. Thank you. We will now turn to former House SpeakerNewt Gingrich, longtime supporter of donald trump over the past four years and he served as fiftieth speaker of the house of representatives. Welcome back to Washington Post live. I remember doing this a few years ago. A few years ago we were talking about georgia as a battleground. The state you are presented in congress for years. Now it is a battleground. Are you worried about Donald Trumps chances in that state . Im not worried. I think he will carry the state but it is more of a fight then it would have been a few years ago. I think you have to give stacy abrams and others some credit for how much they have gone out and organized and gotten people registered, which is what america should be about. I think donald trump will carry georgia and i suspect in the end we will have both u. S. Senate seats but it is more of a fight then it would have been 12 years ago. How have those suburbs around atlanta changed in the last 20 years . They are more diverse ethnically. A little more moderate on the social policy than they would have been and the democrats have been very effective organizing in suburban areas, one of their great strengths. Republicans are enormously wellorganized when you get into small towns and rural counties. The margins role up in those areas, pretty enormous and you cant quite tell how the votes will work, stacy abrams lost the governorship because she lost a significant number of africanamerican males in rural georgia who found her to be too much of a big city person, too antigun and too dismissive of agriculture. The margin, large part of the margin came from africanamerican males who repudiated the democratic nominee. What is the trump campaigns closing message on the economy . On one level you have 20 million Americans Still on some form of unemployment benefits. People have fallen into poverty and the new gdp numbers grow 7. 4 in recent months. Theres a lot of pain out there but the business side of the economy cited thompson recovery. Is a too much too late for donald trump . Gallup did a survey number 56 of the country said despite everything they were better off than four years ago under obama and biden. At that point, that was a hint of what the election was going to end up. He has to be ecstatic, 33 increase in gdp in one quarter. 0 possibility, Vice President biden, anywhere close to matching that Aggressive Growth so the president s message is simple, if you want an economic recovery with trump, back to a world with the lowest black unemployment, lewis latino unemployment in history or you want a long slow painful somewhere between a nonrecovery in a depression with biden. That is a powerful message, the first third of every single now to election day, that simple message. If you like poverty joe biden is your candidate. I have been talking to voters in pennsylvania, they agree they believe donald trump would be better on the economy for their communities. At the same time, disappointment with how donald trump handled the pandemic. How much is the federal response to this crisis . Much more of a burden. The fact is the news media spend months saying look how much better the europeans are doing. The french announced a complete shutdown, germans announced a complete shutdown, and it is going to turn out donald trump saved a lot more lives and ran a more Effective Program than the europeans of the largest losses of lives were states run by democrats who terribly abused the process, in Nursing Homes they shouldnt have been in. The process killed thousands of senior citizens. Trump can make a good case that he react aggressively before anybody else on china, the fact is biden did say trump was xenophobic. Pelosi went to chinatown, to say you shouldnt be worried about china. Then cut off all the fights. Trumps entrepreneurial style, aggressive outreach to business, they have the largest fastest Vaccine Development in history. It will prove at the end of the year to have historic, under traditional bureaucratic biden style government will take four or five years with entrepreneurship, it will take 9 months.
