The morning. Industry. The federal government. Philanthropies and civil society. Welcome to the 2019 summer meeting of the nations governors in beautiful song city utah. Please to once again come together with my colleagues. About the key issues of the day. Including outcomes for disconnected youth. Safer and smarter was. Investing in resilience. Cyber Security Workforce development. They all arrive at early learning. Innovative strategies. We will discuss how together, we can develop bipartisan approaches to improve the lives of all americans. Also want to acknowledge our International Best who have traveled from so far away to be here with us today. Please feel free to stand up as you recognize. From japan we are honored to be joined. He serves a special advisor to the japanese prime minister. Complimentary vice minister of foreign affairs. Japanese ambassador to the u. S. Going to japan. We are joined by governor dominguez. What are you . The chair which is mexicos equivalent of mga. From canada we are joined by a delegation of senators. This is from ontario and quibec. Were also excited to recognize the Council Generals from mexico and japan. Thank you so much for your focus for being here with us today. Thank you also governor and first lady for being wonderful host and showing us a fantastic time here. We certainly looking forward to several social events to complement these business sessions. That includes bringing in that incredible childrens choir. The foragers governor. We appreciate your leadership. We are honored to have you here. Our special guest we have. Those that are here. The childrens choir may make mention. The group of young people from around the state. They just completed a tour in japan. Great ambassadors for america is the travel around seven that cells. And love for our country. Please give them one more round of applause. Let me just mention a couple of things here. Im starting my limit the as governor of the great state of utah. I can tell you that this organization has great progress for america. Is an opportunity for us to come together and discuss issues. To see if we can affect help develop policy. As we learn from each other. I have had the privilege of coming here and gaining some real good longlasting friendships for the past 10 years i have been governor of the state of utah. I hope they will take advantage of the opportunity to come in and associate in the National Governors association. All of us are proud of our states. Without the successes we are having. Also to do the same thing about utah. There is always room for improvement. To come here and learn from you. To see best practices. Taking place in this country. It has helped me become a better governor in the state of utah. I read the song the other day, god bless america. I think the best hopes for our sisters going forward. They are really providing solutions for the nations problems. Is laboratory and democracy. These little pilot programs that we all learn from. Us a tremendous success taking place. I want to congratulate all of them. This organization for bringing them together. Let me just conclude by saying i hope you have enjoyed so far. The event last night. Again, nevada she said this is my first rodeo. We hopefully have that checked off your box. Again, a great example of just local entrepreneurship and a small group of brothers that got together. The southern barbecue. Now spreading intimately with the barbecue. I hope everybody got enough to eat. We have an opportunity as we have seen. Im excited to kick off our summer meeting with the session dedicated to the theme. That is good job for all americans. Over the past year, i have engaged many of you. Both in this table it in the audience. And staff in how we as governors can prepare workforce and businesses for the changing world of work and support the promise of the economy in future opportunity. We all know that we face a profound economic and social transformation catalog by technological disruption. We know how we work and what we do will continue to evolve as it has in the years passed. In our conversation, we heard loud and clear that the challenge facing our economy is not a lack of job. And lack of good jobs that can grow and sustain the middle class. Maybe the Fastest Growing sectors in our economy. Today, we see the recent college graduate. Barely seen the Hourly Earnings since 2000. We cannot grow the middleclass with the following a percent. With 60 percent of americans effectively have not seen a pay increase in 40 years when adjusted for todays turn. Win on the economy is not working for everyone. They place. Through this initiative we have spoken with expert. From many walks of life. We held three original workshops to help identify solutions. Thank you governor windows for certainly bring gracious host. Through this exercise with her for more than 200 experts. Representatives for nearly 40 states. During the series of workshops. Like this past may hosted a solution summit. To continue this conversation. I like to sell you a brief video that will take you through some of the results of the initiative. Other subject matter experts. But for what we see and what we hear from employees. Also what we hear from our constituents. Every single governor around the country is trying to make sure that the folks in their state are prepared only for the jobs of today but also opportunity jobs tomorrow. During this initiative, we have had over 200 experts. Over 42 states and territories involve. Coming to the table to say what are we doing today but what can we be doing in the future. Due to changes in the automation of globalization. With their color shifting underneath their feet, do we have to recognize what those changes are and equip people with new skills and new opportunities. One of the things i think a school is that we have been able to place the navigator within the education. There really help to work with the Different Community colleges. To create these experiences. Whatever that looks like. Now we really are in a time of lifetime learning. We have to be able to get them the skills and the opportunities. I think it takes you looking differently what the Education Systems are. So you can come back to the two year colleges. It is this idea of helping those midcareer job changes. Looking to adopt the new technologies out there. Does not seem to be a lot of policies out there. Im looking forward to learning. Nobody should have to leave their home or their church. The focus on initiatives and the second adults. We need to get more of our adults into middle skilled or high school job. The talk and discussion about what other states are doing. As an attempt to incentivize individuals to come to our state in areas. All the great opportunities are available for work. It has been exciting. The answers that we need. Right there in front of us. The people all across this country doing good work. How we want to tie this all together is to bring that good Work Together. For a guide for every single governor in our country. So they can make sure every single individual in the state and communities make better shot. The joint our conversation today and provide a different perspective, please welcome me. Visual business. Certainly pleased that he is joined us today. He oversees broad Digital Services portfolio. That includes digital strategy. And analytics. Digital engineering. Digital content platform. The program which implicates digital adventures. The was executive Vice President and chief marketing officer. Evident across media. What to do when machines do everything. Both of which received multiple International Book awards. Offered numerous white papers focus on the future work. Mount industrystandard. Always sought after. Thank you so much for being there. Thank you for having me. I want to talk about 2 topics. The first is job. The second is your state. I depot become a magnet. We have a lot to cover. With go back to hundred plus years. They were actually right. They could do the work of 40 of them. They were not very good economist. It became the platform of the First Industrial resolution. They embrace the new machine. They saw skyrocketing gdp. Incredible Public Wealth creation. Also created their job of the future. It was the machine for the second industrial revolution. The Assembly Line for the third industrial revolution. We believe Artificial Intelligence performs are now the new machine. Driving the industrial revolution. This is debatable a few years ago. Look at the value creation. Eight of the top 10 companies on earth are based on this preference. To have become trillion dollar farms. Like amazon and microsoft. This is a special time. It is only just beginning. It is a great story of our time. Is a story that generates lots of based emotions. On one hand, the art of the possible. We see this tactical wonder. All of us been way too much time on our smart phones working on these platforms. If there is this deep concern with this fear about job. The software is eating the world. The foundation of a good society. Are we going to be left. Society of the hyper rich and then the poor. Living up to basic income. This is a real concern a lot of folks have. We did a lot of research. Our latest book was about this. Wish you think there is a sign of hope here. If you are proactive. If you take the right steps. When it comes to software and jobs, only one of three things will happen. A job can be eliminated. They can actually be enhanced. Think of using ways when you drive around town. Youre actually being enhanced by a machine. We will see this come to medicine. Or they will be jobs in the future. We do not know now. Tried to explain the web designer to somebody in 1970. These are the three things that are going to work. There were eliminating job. 90 percent of the activity is going to be about job enhancement for creating the job of the future. Our estimation. About 12 percent will be laws. This is quite significant. Millions of jobs that could go way. If you do nothing there is going to be a gravity. You will be victimized. I grope in the cleveland area. It was rough. To watch all of those jobs go way. It was really brittle to observe. Quite optimistic. I spent time on your state. How do you become a magnet. A lot of the tech employees. We have about 280,000 employees. We also worked very closely with leading platforms. Im going to give you a playbook. How we view you. When we decide where to invest. We have a 100 Million Foundation run jobs for the future. Investing in local communities. Economic shifts. This is not just for a bunch of bearded hipsters in San Francisco or new york. This is available to everybody. It is like brainpower it not natural resources. We can spend an hour on each of these. Im going to spend one minute introducing them. The first is findings. We take a look at what is the role of government for the private sector. This award ravenously well. You can argue the morality of it. Today, we look at the role of state governments with fortune 500. Are they investing in your state. We look at private equity. Incubators. The new job creation and company formation. Interesting, the Smallest Group but often the highest indicator are angel investors. Is a people that got really wealthy in your state. Are they staying in reinvesting . That is really something we look very closely at. The attractiveness of these communities. The second is interesting. What do we mean by this. All buildings. Plates are needed the workers clicking away on their computers inside. This is a hot trend. Revitalizing urban areas. This is happening in lots of places. Is happened across europe. Kings cross in london. That is what it looked like 25 years ago. The regentrification of this neighborhood is simply remarkable. In fact, that is what looks like today. These tech workers working in this community. Amazing private partnership to revitalize this place. Our office was just off to the left. Is being built just behind with this photograph was taken. With this you see heb is creating a new headquarters for digital workers. Kroger is doing the same. Walmart is not letting the 300 acre campus specifically to attract the workers of the future. If you look for example in pittsburgh. They are doing the same. It is a road of common elements. Is workers do not want to work in some soul destroying office park. They want to be in these urban areas. You can kill two birds with one stone. Rebuilding as well as attracting these workers and these companies. They want a diverse community. Of course it has to be said. We are seeing more teams are properly. It attracts these workers. Certainly is a pretty big correlation. The third that we look up. Go straight to its spreadsheet. Is your system producing enough digital workers. I think there has been a huge mismatch between the academy and the private sector. They used to be incredibly strong. Look at the miracle of the California University system. So how that has become disconnected. We took a strong look. These are producing lots of Computer Sciences. Data scientist. Electrical engineers. This attracts business and the whole ecosystem. It all started with the educational ecosystem out there as well. There is an incredibly Important Role for state governments in driving disconnection of the curriculum of producing these workers of the future. A fourth one. We are bad at this. The culture of this community. Take a company we all know. Think of a typical goldman employee. Master of the universe. Investment banker. Or, does it look more like this. A quarter of the workforce rights code. It is more than 30 percent now. There are computer geeks. Is in a Software Company or an investment been. It is really not bold. Their new ceo. This is how he moonlights. Is actually a dj. He really has the sensibility that is needed for this digital workforce. Make it open to everybody. Diversity. My industry has plans. Tech is not diverse and. Over by man. On top of that, there is lots of minority representation. Lots of asians. A lot of chinese and lots of indians. Date greatly represented by the africanamerican community. I now live in new york city. We have the issue with amazon headquarters. And all of that assign points. Said this was new yorks exit. Others would say this is socialist math. Was on the opera. To get them 30 and ask for three back. They prefer the latter. Another is people are quick to blame amazon. There were clumsy in their efforts. Actually think the underlying problem is diversity. There was a sense this is about the rich getting richer. Not making it available to everybody. This is really cool everything that has to occur. I think people on this table can really lead the charge with that. That is the formula. Revitalizing these areas. Creating enough workers of the future educational system. Having a culture that supports these workers. Then finally making it open to everyone in the community. Do not be it. Embrace the new machine. Prosperity really does favor the proactive. Not to stick this wednesday morning. This is a sign of hope. Thank you very much. Also joining me up. President congressional leaders. Is the author of the widely acclaimed book, America Needs talent. Me of the top 10 books of 2016. s work also includes expensive global experience. As an advisor and consultant in southern africa. Also a member of the formulations. Thank you for being her. Let me begin first by congratulating you on your initiative. Good jobs from america i think is a smart agenda. You are to be commended for the important work that the implement as a result of the work that has been done here. I think is sort of underscores the importance of why that work matters. I took three big things out of what he had to say in his excellent remarks. Work is changing. There is a rising demand for tommy. How we actually deploy that talent going forward. One expression of that, the vast majority of the jobs today, more than two thirds requires a form of Post High School education credential. A degree or certificate. Today only 40 percent of americans have those credentials. We must understand workers changing. I would spend no time on trying to predict which dogs are going to be lost and which ones will be created. Mit did a study last year of all the studies that have been done. They found no correlation among all of them. They did not make any sense. Not spend any
