CSPAN3 Prime Ministers Questions Prime Ministers Questions July 13, 2024

Want to extend our condolences to families who lost their lives to the storms. And like to offer our support to the impact of these storms and local environment agencies. I had meetings with the colleagues and others and in addition to my duties, i will have other meetings today. I would like to extend my thanks to the Prime Minister and those helping in the amp fterma of storm dennis. It brought record high water levels. Parts of my area have been flooded. And one just breached its banks. Will the Prime Minister use his influence in the budget and later this year in the comprehensive Spending Review for flood defenses for communities at risk as part of this is determination in this year of 26 to show Global Leadership taking action on Climate Change and adaptation and mitigation . Indeed i can. I thank my honorable friend saying we have been insuring the minister of Housing Needs and local government is able to extend where appropriate and i can tell my honorable friends of course we are investing massively in floods, defenses and 6. 2 billion pounds are going in and have committed another 4 billion pounds against flooding. Jeremy corbyn. My thanks, mr. Speaker. My thoughts to those in the world defending against the corona virus and those around the world to stop the spread of this standard. I hope the Public Health services will get the resources they need and there is an urgent question on this after the Prime Ministers question time today. Thousands of people across the country are still struggling with the impact of the floods. I want to thank the scottish and welsh governments and counsel staff and governments helping residents and huge communities of volunteers pitched in to help their neighbors. Does the Prime Minister agree with the leader of dash birsch county council hes turned his back on those affected by the floods. Since the government began we have been working out night and day to insure this country gets the support they need activating to make sure business gets the recovery relief they need, business rate relief, as i told the house just now putting 2. 6 billion pounds now and 4 billion pounds more to come. Mr. Speaker, you cant say you support them and then pull back on them. Not my words. And i have seen the damages it caused. The Prime Minister was silent, s sulking in his estate. And after two weeks not saying wheres wally, where is boris . When is the federal government going to stop hiding and show people that he actually cares or is he too busy going about some other business. Maybe if he is too busy he could send his friend, Dominic Cummings who im sure is not too busy. Im aware of what has been mound the last few days and since then there has been a constant stream of activity led by my honorable friends for secretary of state for environment and communities and local government. Never forget in spite of the flooding, no one should underestimate the anguish flooding causes. Its an absolute shock to the households affected but thanks to the measures this government has put in 200,000 households have been protected from flooding and we dont hear that from the honorable member. During the Election Campaign i wrote that cobra be called. He agreed to that and called a meeting of cobra. The situation now is even worse across the country than it was then. No cobra has been called or is he pretending to care when he doesnt care at all because theres no votes on the line at this moment. He knows perfectly well there was a stream of ministerial meetings and i have been directing it. Cobra is a reference to Cabinet Office Briefing Room a. It is not the only place a meeting can take place. Mr. Speaker, it is very sers and they need support and not trite answers like that from their Prime Minister. Time and again communities and lives have been put at risk and the government simply refuses to acknowledge the scale of the problem. Does he agree with his honorable friend, membershiply who said the government has done precious little to stop the floods from happening again. Mr. Speaker, let me repeat for benefit of the right honorable government this government has a fantastic record of investing in flood defenses and the reason we can do so. The reason we can put 6. 4 billion undpounds and pledge another 4 billion because i am putting it first that you would ruin. Why then is the government investing less than half of the amount of me on the Environment Agency of england says is necessary to improve flood defenses across the country. They say 5. 6 billion is needed. So far as im aware, the government is investing less than half of that. Many areas of the household, i learned a lot visiting victims of floods. The Prime Minister should try it one day. They told me they cant afford insurance on their home because costs have skyrocketed. 20,000 homes are not protected by the governments Insurance Scheme are also not protected by flood defenses. Thats 20,000 homes with no insurance and in danger of being flooded imminently. Isnt it time the Prime Minister found a very urgent solution to this problem. Imagine what its like to live in a home in danger of being flooded and you cant get it insured and if you own it you cant sell it or cant move, totally stuck. They are looking for the government to help them out in their time of crisis. Mr. Speaker he is perfectly right that there are problems to do with insurance. Anybody that visited a flood household will know. There has been Flood Coverage for over 160,000 households in 2019. We are looking since last decembers events, we are looking what we can do to protect households that do not have proper household insurance. He also knows households that get 500 pounds and 5,000 pounds to compensate themselves from the worst damage flooding can do. That is cash we can put in thanks to flood defenses we have made believe me beyond any government led by corbin or right honorable member. The welsh governments have done their best to step up to the crisis from westminster. The Prime Minister was posed to cameras for the election. He then went on awol. Not there to respond to the riots, on a German Island when there was an assassination and another of his colleagues said, its not good enough. How can the Country Trust a Prime Minister, a parttime Prime Minister . Last night, last night, smoozingtory party donors at a very expensive black tie ball, instead of getting out there and supporting the people suffering because of the floods. This government needs to step up to the plate and invest in defenses and insure there is real insurance for people whose homes are being ruined by these floods as we speak. Mr. Speaker, the right honorable gentleman asked what his government has been doing these last few days. Not only investing massive defenses and stopping those from flooding but stopping terrorists. We restored the nurses area, we are beginning work on 40 new hospitals and recruiting 20,000 new police officers. We can do that, mr. Speaker, because we have a strong and dynamic economy with employment at record highs. Unemployment down to levels not seen since the early 70s, wages going up, homeownership going up. What are they doing, mr. Speaker, look at them jabbering away, jabbering away. I think we will have a little more silence after the second one. Quite right, mr. Speaker because they still cant decide whether or not they want to be in the European Union and the hottest topic of debate what position should the right gentleman have. They are engaging themselves in narcicisstic debate and we are getting on in the peoples priorities. The Prime Minister will be aware of the concern in settled Rural Communities such as those in northeast hartfordshire because of intentional Unauthorized Development to travel to see its. This leads to large numbers of lauries and caravans coming onto lands where theres no Planning Commission and subsequently ignoring of enforcement when the local authority tries to intervene. The government has said it will bring forward measures to try and tackle these planning issues. Will the Prime Minister put his authority behind this and get it sorted out . Mr. Speaker, i take that issue very seriously and thank my right honorable friend for raising it for giving local authorities power to reject intentional Unauthorized Development, and we will be consulting on the details of those proposals in a forthcoming white paper. I hope he will contribute to those consultations. Thank you, mr. Speaker. This week, we learned 40 of Small Businesses in scotland employ more than one eu international. This is crucial for scotlands economy. Its no wonder the scottish governments proposals for a scottish visa system have been universally welcomed by businesses and charities alike. Even the scottish tories think its a good idea. The Prime Minister rejected these proposals within a few short hours. Does he never admit this was a mistake . Mr. Speaker, it was not only i who rejected the proposal but the migration advisory committee. That is because we are bringing forward a very sensible proposal of this country desired whereby we take back it with a pointsbased system. We will insure everywhere in this country, all businesses and agricultural sectors and fishing communities in this country can access the labor and workforce they need under our poundsbased system. What would be the height of insanity would be to proceed with the smps solution of a border between england and scotland. Once again the Prime Minister assures hes utterly delusional. Lets look at the reality. Scottish said the damaging immigration plans shut the door for elderly people to be cared for in their own home. The general secretary of the emb union said the plans could tip businesses over the edge. Scotlands National Farmers union said evidence has been disregarded, disregarded by the uk government and the Scottish Tourism Alliance say their plans have devastating impact for workers. They have said what the Scottish Parliament says doesnt matter one bit. If the Prime Minister thinks the Scottish Parliament doesnt matter the scottish businesses matter. Of course the scottish businesses matter and to do well by scottish businesses is not to tax them with the highest tax rates in the uk. We want a sound economy in scotland, to have an educational system that doesnt leave scottish children lagging behind through no fault of their own. Mr. Speaker, this government will get on and deliver a working immigration system for the whole of this country. I may say respectfully to the right honorable gentleman who said to me from a sedentary position, he would be better off getting on for the people of scotland rather to continue with his ceaseless and vein quest to break up the United Kingdom. He will not succeed. Delivering for the people. Im sure the Prime Minister shares my concerns about the delay in the delivery of the east line that runs through my constituency and others. Will the Prime Minister intervene to insure there are no more delays in this vital railway line. Mr. Speaker, i thank my honorable speaker for raising the connections. I can tell her in addition to the 48 billion were putting in, it has just been indicated to me those connections are his highest priority. Thank you, mr. Speaker. Green was born with cerebral palsy, unable to walk, talk or feed himself and brought joy and love to all who knew him. Last week one of the Prime Ministers resigned when a basic check of their internet review show they promoted yugenesist policies that would have ended my brothers life before it began. Can i ask why andrew nebisky remained at the heart of his government and not removed from his position immediately when his abhorrent views became abhorrent. Mr. Speaker, lets make clear i dont share those views nor anybody in this government. That individual no longer works for the government. Does the President Trump agree through the establishment of the office for Environmental Protection which will hold this government and future governments it is the conservative leading it and will you join me for their commitment to be Carbon Neutral by 2030 . Mr. Speaker, it of course brings me great joy to congratulate them on their Ground Breaking leadership, of course, following in the foot steps of the National Government who led the way in setting a carbon zero target by 2050. This will lead our country in a better state for the next generation. Mr. Speaker, i have a flagrant constituent for the next couple weeks. After deductions including an advance she is left with the grand sum of 111 pounds a month to feed herself, heat her home and prepare for her child. I know you will likely want more details about this case and will be happy to help. I want to ask him in principle as the Prime Minister, does he think that 111 pounds a month is enough for anyone to live on . Mr. Speaker, i am of course very happy indeed to look at the case and do whatever we can to help with the individual case. I must say to her in the round universal credit has helped and is helping 200,000 people into work. There is an estimated 1 million disabled households who will get around 100 pounds more per months as a result of universal credit. I am proud to stand by a record of helping people in to work and off welfare. As i said to her before, im more than happy to look at the case, in answer to her question, in a word, is no. Mr. Speaker, the people, like many millions previously voted labor and now put their faith into a conservative government are now in fact traitors if theyve been branded by the members opposite this week, in fact members on this side of the house respect the hard working communities and respect their choices and will deliver for them. Mr. Speaker, i will not comment on repatriation meted out, i will say that all should be treated with respect and humility and the hard working people of manfield, 10 Million Pounds and 5 Million Pounds for road improvements and health and future high streets. In my view, the people of mansfield are well served by my honorable friend. Mr. Speaker, like many other soft post masters, my constituent was victim to the post office and an i. T. System scandal. These errors as a resulted in bankruptcy, imprisonment and even suicides. Will the Prime Minister today insure chris and others he will commit to launching an independent inquiry . Mr. Speaker, i am indeed aware of the scandal to which she alludes and the disasters that has befallen Many Post Office workers. Im happy, although i have met some myself, i am happy to get to the bottom in the way she recommends. If you live in one of the rural villages in my constituency it can take a whole day to travel to and from for a doctors appointment because buses are so far in between. As a bus enthusiast, will you assure me some of the 5 Million Pounds will go to improving routes . Mr. Speaker, absolutely right about the importance of buses and transformative power. As to what will happen in penniston and stockbridge, she will have to wait for the Upcoming National bus strategy, along in a moment. Mr. Speaker, before the last successful Climate Change talks in 2015 in paris, i led the preparations including delegations of the three preceding u. N. Climate talks. Global action on Climate Change only happens when the host nation engages with the Worlds Largest nations in advance, of the highest political level. As the host of the 2020 climate talks, will the Prime Minister today commit himself to meeting those of india and President Trump, secure for the glasgow talks Global Action on the Climate Emergency . Im grateful to the right honorable gentleman. I can tell him and the house that ive already engaged last week with president xi of china, repeatedly with president modi of india, and already on this subject with President Trump. There will be an intensifying drumbeat of activity on the runup to glasgow. No doubt you remember with the same fondness the conversations he had when outlining his plan for britain. I welcome very much what hes been saying about the defense review thats now planned and his priority for having a strategy for Foreign Policy led review. Will he please make a statement
