Paula, democrats elicit is an, i thank you for the nomination youve offered me. And i especially thank you for trusting as my running meet the best partner anyone could ever have, chris mondale. [applause] with gratitude and determination, i accept your nomination. Im proud to run on the progressive vote that you have and the convention. A campaign that defines a campaign that response to the intelligence of the American People. A campaign that talks sense. We are going to beat the republicans in november. We will when because were at the podium of a president who you had to get elected. Franklin roosevelt. [applause] we are the party of a courageous fighter and were gonna give him hell, eric truman. And as truman said, they just saw the truth, and they thought it was how. And we are the party of a gallant man, John Fitzgerald kennedy. And were the party of a great leader of compassion. Lyndon johnson. [applause] and the party of great men who should have been president and who would have been one of the greatest president s in history. [applause] i have appreciate what the convention has said a great man who appeared as sized the state of the party and i would like to say that we are all for the party of governor jerry brown and senator edward kennedy. [noise] id like to say a personal word to some of the candidates. Seth, you are tough competitor and superb campaigner and i can attest to that. Your speech before the convention was a magnificent favor of what the Democratic Party is and what it means to the people of this country. And why a Democratic Victory is so important this year. I reach out to you tonight, and i reach out to all of you and the campaign. I need you. [applause] i need your idealism and dedication working for us. There is no doubt that Even Better Service less ahead of. You were grateful for you. And the head of your Strong Partnership now for what your own life has been dedicated. I thank you for your support. We will make great progress this fall and pushing out the republican. [applause] we are democrats and weve had our differences. But we share a bright vision of americas future. A vision of good life for all our people. A vision of adjusted, saudi a peaceful world. A strong america. Confident and proud, and united. And we have a memory at Franklin Roosevelt 40 years ago there are times in our history were concerned over our personal lives are overshadowed by our concern about we have known. This is such a time. I can tell you that the choice you make this year can transform our own personal lives, and the lives of our country as well. During the last president ial campaign i crisscross the country and i listen to thousands and thousands of people. Teachers and Small Business leaders, workers and students. The elderly and the pool. People of every race and every background and every walk of life. It was a powerful experience. The human reality of america. And i have not had another kind of total immersion being president of the United States of america. Let me talk for a moment, about what the job is like and what ive learned from it. Ive learned that only the most complex and difficult tasks come before me in the oval office. No easy answers are found there, because no easy questions come down there. Ive learned from the personal experience. The best guide to the right decision, im wiser tonight that i was four years ago. And i have learned that the presidency is a place for complexion. My own heart is burning for the troubled americans, the poor and the jobless. They become part of me. My thoughts and my prayers wear with those in iran, as though they were my own sons and daughters. The life of every human being on earth can depend on the experience, judgment and vigilance of the person in the oval office. The president s powerful bill, and his powerful destruction are also. And the powers greatest in the states highest, in manageable warren peas, and ive learned something else. Something that i have seen with extraordinary clarity above all i must look ahead. Because if the president of the United States is astute indentations destiny, he must protect our children and the children they want to have. And the children of delegation generations to follow. He must speak and act for them. That is his burden and his glory. And that is why president cannot yield to this short sighted demands no matter how big our problems especially if they might be making these demands. And thats why the president cannot fail to the fashions of the moment. However popularly might be. And thats why the president must sometime must ask for sacrifice, when people would rather hear the promise of comfort. The president is a servant of today, but his true constituency is the future. Thats why the election of 1980 is so important. [applause] some have said it makes no different who is elected. They are wrong. This election is a stark choice, between two men, two parties, two different pictures of what america is and what the world is. But its more than that. Its a choice between two futures. The year 2000 its just less than 20 years away just for president ial elections after this one. Children born this year will come of age in the 24 century. The time to shape the year the world of the year 2000 is now. No decisions of the next few years will set our course perhaps a new reversible course, and the most important of all choices will be made by the American People at the polls, less than three months from tonight. , the choice cannot be more clear. Though the consequences more crucial. In one of the features we can choose a future that you and i have been building together, i see security, justice, and bees. I see a future of economic security. Security that will come from tapping our own great resources of oil and gas goal and an from Building Technology factories that will revitalized the economy. Based on jobs, and stable prices for everyone. And i see a future of justice. The justice of good job Health Care Quality education. A full opportunity for our own people regardless of color language, or religion. The human justice of equal rights for all men and for all women. Guaranteed equal rights at last under the constitution of the United States of america. [applause] and i see a feature of peace. A piece born with wisdom. And based on the countries in the world apiece guaranteed both by American Military strength, and by american model strength as well. That is a future i want for all people. A future of confidence, and hope, and a good light. Its a future american must choose. And with your help, and with your commitment, it is to future america will choose. But there is another possible future. And that other future icing despair, despair of millions. They would struggle for equal opportunity, and a better life. They will struggle alone. And i see surrender. The surrender of our energy future. For the merchants of oil. The surrender of our economic future, to a bizarre program of massive tax cuts for the rich. Service cuts for the poor. And massive inflation for everyone. And i see risk, the risk of international confrontation. The risk of an uncontrollable, unaffordable, and on winnable nuclear arms race. Annes no one, democrat or republican leader consciously seeks such a future. And i do not claim anything, but i do question the disturbing commitment and policies made by him, and by those with him, who have now captured before the republican party. The consequences of those commitments of policies would take us down the wrong road. To make sure america rejects this alarming death rate. The only way, the only way to build a better future, its just hard but the reality of the president. But wildly democrats grapple with the real challenges, on the real world, others talk about a world of make believe. Lets look for a moment at the make believe world they have the fantasy of america and our city people who have worked in the labor that do not exist. Women, like children, ought to be seen but not heard. The problems of working women are simply ignored, the elderly do not need medicare. The young do not need more help in getting a better education. Workers do not require guarantee of a healthy and safe place to work. In their fantasy world, all the complex global changes of the world, of the world since world war ii, have never happened. In their fantasy america, all problems have simple solutions. Simple, and rolling. Its a make believe world. A world of good guys and bad guys. Where some politicians shoot first, and ask questions later. No hard choices, no sacrifice no tough decision. It sounds too good to be true. And it is. The bat of fantasy leads to a responsibility. The path of reality, leads to hope and peace. The two path cannot be more different. Nor could the futures to which they lead. Lets take a hard look at the consequences of our choice. You and i have been working towards a more secure, future by rebuilding our strength. Steadily, carefully, and responsibly. The republicans talk about military strength, but they are out of office for the last 11 years. And in the fierce face of a growing soviet threat, they steadily got really fenced spending by more than a third. We reversed the republican decline in defense. Every year sees every president weve had really increase in our commitment to a stronger nation. Increases with our prudence and rational. Theres been no doubt that the United States of america can meet any threat from the soviet union. Our modernized strategic force, our revitalized nation, submarines, the cruise missiles, Rapid Deployment form, all these guarantee that we will never be second to any nation. These, not words, fact not fiction, we must and we will continue to build our own defenses. We must and we will continue to see reduction in nuclear arms. When you leaders of the republican party, in order to close the gap between their rhetoric and their record, have now promised to launch an all new career our interests, this would mitigate any further effort to negotiate an agreement. There can be no winners, in such an arms race. And all the people of the earth can be the losers. The republican nominee advocates abandoning arms control policies, which have been imported and supported by every democratic president , since harry truman. And also, by every republican president , since dwight eisenhower. This radical and irresponsible course would threaten our security. And could put the whole world in peril. You and i must never come this let this come to pass. Its simple to call for an arms race, but when they threatened the world peace, a tough sounding talk like that is not enough. A president must act. Responsibly. When soviet troops invaded afghanistan, we moved quickly to take action. I suspended some rain sale, for the soviet union, i called for draft registration, withdrawn horn heartedly with the congress. I join wholeheartedly with the congress and the u. S. Olympics committee, and 60 other nations boycotting the big propaganda show in moscow country. The republican leader opposed the peaceful actions and he waffled on the third. But when we ask him what he would do about Southeast Asia he suggested blockading cuba. Even his running mate wouldnt go along with that. Hes not sure what you want to do with the russians. Hes not sure if he wants to feed, them play with, them or fight with them. As i look back at my first term, im grateful that weve had a country with a full four years of peace. [applause] and thats what were gonna have for the next four years. Peace. [applause] its only common sense for america in europe, we must encourage others to be peaceful as well. We have helped in a year rhodesia but we have stood firm for democracy. And we have also helped in the middle east. Some of criticized the campaign of course, and they have criticized some delays and implementations in the middle east peace treaty. But before i became president there was no middle east accord, and there was no peace treaty. [applause] [noise] before david and egypt, across barbed wire, and burning each other with guns and tanks in flames. But afterwards, they talked face to face each other with each other across a peace table. They also with their own ambassadors in cairo in tel aviv. Now that is the kind of future we are offering. Peace in the middle east if democrats are reelected in the fall. Im very proud that nearly half of the men in our country has given in the nearly 32 years of our existence thats come through my administration. [applause] unlike our republican predecessors, weve gathered struck, slowed to israel. As long as i am president we will never do so. [applause] our commitment is clear. Security and peace for israel. Peace for all the people in the middle east. The world can have a future of freedom, as well as piece, america must continue to defend human rights. [applause] now listen to this. The new Republican Leaders imposed our human rights policy. They want to scrap it. They seem to think its naive for democrats to stand up for freedom and democracy. What do they think we should stand up for . [applause] as a political president who now have the freedom that we should abandon our stand on human rights and the business in the soviet union, about our commitment to human rights. As a hungarian, american as the first american, ask those for the sake of justice and around the world, millions fighting tyranny if americans would stop speaking up for him in principle. As the people i tell you that as long as i am president we will quarreled high the banner of human rights and you can defend it. [applause] here at home the choice between the two futures is equally important. In the long run nothing is more crucial to the future of america than energy. Neglected in the past. Long after the 1973 arab embargo, the republicans and the white house had still done nothing for the threat of the National Security of our nation. Then as now their policy was dictated by the big Oil Companies. We democrats fought heart to rally our aground good policy and programs. A new foundation for challenge and progress. Now after three years of struggle we have our normal. The fight to secure american americans have corporate with dramatic result. Weve reversed decades of dangers on foreign oil. We are now importing 20 more oil. Thats one and a half Million Barrels of Oil Every Day less than the day i took office. [applause] with our new Energy Policy now in place, we can discover more. Reduce more. Create more, and conserve more. We will use american resources. American technology, and millions of American Workers to do it with. [applause] now what have the republicans proposed . The program has two parts. The first part is to get rid of almost everything that weve done for the American Public in the last three years. They want to reduce or abolish the synthetic field programs. They want to slice the energy, the conservation program, aid to aid to elderly americans to help pay their fuel bill. And while theyre at it the republicans have the guts to clean up their act. They never liked it to begin with. Thats one part of the problem. The other part is worse. The replacement we have built, this is what they propose. To destroy the windfall tax, and to unleash the Oil Companies and let them solve an every problem for us. Thats it. Thats it. Thats the whole program. There is no more. Can the nation except such a outrageous program . No we democrats want every step of the way we campaign for reelection. [applause] when i took office i inherited a heavy load of serious economic problems of energy. We have met them all had on. Weve slashed government regulations, and put Free Enterprise back in the airlines. Systems in the country, and were doing the same thing for the railroads. This is the greatest change in the relationship between government and business since the new deal. [applause] weve increased our experts. Dramatically reception development. And we have created more than 8 million new jobs. The biggest increase in the history of our country. But the road is bumpy, and last years skyrocketing increases has helped to trigger a worldwide depletion crisis. We took forceful action, and Interest Rates have now fallen. The dollar is stable, and although we still have a battle on our hands, we are struggling to bring inflation under control. We are now at the critical point, the turning point, and economic history of our country. We made the her decision because we have guided our mission at its economy, weve laid the groundwork for a new economic age. The economic Renewal Program for the 19 eighties, we immediately have and attack the very same along rich problems that caused unemployment and an inflation in the first place. Simultaneously towards our five great economic goals. Lower inflation. Better productivity. Revitalization of American History. Energy security, and jobs. [applause] its time to put all america back to work, but not in fake world, in real world. There is real work and modernizing american industry, creating new heres just a few things will rebuild together and build together. New energy to turn our shell and cool, in turn the light of the sun, into heat and electricity for our homes. A modern Transportation System of railways, to make americas [inaudible] industries will provide a convenience of Computer Technology and communication to serve millions of American Homes and offices and factories. Job creating for workers new investment pinpointed in regions and communities where jobs need it most. Spinning in our cities and between cities, and a whole new generation of americans jobs it combs, and vehicles, and buildings that will help us and provide us with comfort with a lot less energy. [applause] this is important to. Ive no doubt that the ingenuity and dedication of the American People can make every single one of these things happen. We are talking about the United States of america. [applause] those who count this country at as a economic superpower are going to find out just how wrong they are. [applause] we want to share exceeding the price of making the 19 eighties in time of goals for america. The republican alternative is the biggest tax giveaway in history. They call it reagan kemp roughed. I call it a freelance that the americans cant afford. The republican tax Program Offers rebates to the rich, deprivation for the four, and for all of us. [applause] their parties own Vice President ial nominee said that rodrigo would result in a inflation rate of more than 30 . He called it voodoo economics. [applause] he suddenly changed his mind towards the end of the republican convention, but he was right the first time. [applause] along with his gigantic tax cut, the new Republican Leaders promised to protect the Health Program and have massive defense spending and the claim theyre serious about balancing the budget. If they are serious about these programs and they say they, are not a close Analysis Shows that the entire rest of the government would have to be abolished. Everything from foreign programs. From the gi bill to the in the lincoln memorial. And would still be in the red. The only alternative would be to build more either way, the American People lose. But the American People will not stand for it. [applause] the Democrat Party is always of our people for justice, opportunity, and a better life. And we will work in every way possible to strengthen the american family, to encourage self reliance, and to follow the oldest meant ammunition to defend the poor and the fatherless, give justice to deflected and needy and struggle to ensure that no tallinn america ever goes to that hungry. That no elderly couple in america has to live in a substandard home. And they know young person in america mister scorched from college because their family is poor. [applause] but what have the republicans proposed . Theyve attacked everything weve done in the achievement of social justice and decency that weve Franklin Roosevelt was turned. They would make Social Security voluntarily. They would reverse our progress in the minimum wage. Unemployment laws, safety in the workplace, and a healthy environment. Lately as you know, the republicans been flirting democratic president s. Who can blame them. Would you rather Herbert Hoover or foreign glenn eleanor roosevelt. Would you rather flaunt Richard Nixon or John Fitzgerald kennedy . The republicans have always been the party of privilege. But this year, the leaders have gone even further. And their platforms they have repudiated the best positions of their own party. It bears the conscience of lincoln in the party of lincoln. The traditional republican commitment to fiscal responsibility . What happened to the commitment to receive unseen arms control . I dont clean perfection for the Democratic Party. I dont think that every decision we have made has been right or popular. Certainly, theyve not all been easy. But i will say this. We have been tested under fire. We have neither docked or head. The [applause] weve tackled the Great Central issues of our time. The historic challenges of peace and energy which have been ignored for years. We have made tough decisions, and we have taken the heat for them. We have made mistakes, and weve learned from it. But we have built the foundation now for a better future. We have done something else. Perhaps even more important. And good times and in pad, in the valleys and the peaks, we have told people the truth, the hard truth. [applause] the truth of sometimes hurts. One truth that americans have learned, has been earned for progress and for peace. Look at whatever land has been through with an our own memory. A great depression. A world war. The technological explosion and civil rights revolution. The bitterness of vietnam. She move watergate. The twilight piece of nuclear terror. Theyre each of these momentous experiences, we have learned the hard way about the world, and about ourselves. Weve matured and weve grown as a nation, and weve grown stronger. Weve learned the uses and limitations of power. Weve learned the beauty and responsibility of freedom. Weve learned the value and application of justice. And we have learned the necessity of peace. Mud argue that master that lesson is to somehow limit our potential. That is not so. A nation which knows its true strength would see its true challenges which understands legitimate constraint. That, nation our nation is for a stronger than refuge or Wishful Thinking or nostalgia. The Democratic Party, the moroccan people have understood this fundamental truths. Every one of us can someplace with the desire for easy answers. There is often a temptation to substitute idle dreams for hardearned reality. The Republican Leaders are hoping that our nation was to come to that temptation this year. But they profoundly misunderstand and the character of the American People. Three weeks after proharbor, Winston Churchill keen to north america, and he said we have journeyed all this way, we have not journeyed all this way across the century, across the ocean, across the mountain, across the prairies because we are made of sugar candy. We americans have courage. Americans have always been on the cutting age of change. Weve always look forward with anticipation and confidence. And we want this in think that all of you want. So was neighborhoods, good medical care for the. Second opportunity for our youth, and dignity for all. Equal rights of justice for all people. I want teachers eager to explain what a civilization really is. [applause] and i want to understand their own needs, and also the needs and yearnings of their neighbors. I want women free to pursue without limits the fall of what they want for themselves. [applause] i want our farmers growing crops to feed our nation the world. Securing and a return on the good work they do for all of us. I want workers to see meaning in the work that they perform. And work enough to guarantee jobs for every worker in this country. And i want to people and business feel free to pursue new ideas, and i want my citizens enjoy the American Life and i want to remove the other discrimination from the face of our nation and im determined to do it. [applause] i need for you to all join me in fulfilling that. Vision the choice. The choice between the two futures couldnt be more clear. If we succumb to a dream world then we will wake up to a nightmare. But if we start with reality, and fight to make our dreams a reality, then americans will have a good life. A life of meaning and purpose and a nation that strong and secure. [applause] above all, i want us to be what the founders of our nation months to become. The land of freedom. The land of peace. And the land of hope. Thank you very much. [applause] [noise] having a little trouble getting the blues down, on the top of your screen, one is stuck, and the other is only partially opening, were getting a little waterfall. ,. , i first debate from the 1988 campaign, between incumbent Vice President george h.
