In the early 1960s Dylan solidified his position in the folk world with albums of original compositions. His management kept him from including a rock song on those early albums, preferring to present him as an acoustic act. That was all to end in 1965 when
Bringing It All Back Home had an electric and an acoustic side, and a few months later Dylan appeared at the Newport Folk Festival backed by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
The Newport crowd was not happy, but Dylan continued his new path by hiring the Hawks, who renamed themselves the Band to be his first backing band.
