The downtown Des Moines library was closed Tuesday after a police say a man walked in and set himself on fire inside, Sept. 17, 2019.
A Des Moines Public Library employee who died in April wrongly charged more than $28,000 to a library credit card primarily at Hy-Vee, Walmart and Walgreens, according to auditors hired by the city.
A report by the accounting firm RSM US LLP concludes that Bekki Kirkland, who worked as an office manager at the time of her death, made 159 fraudulent transactions — a third of them to purchase unauthorized prepaid VISA cards — from 2016 to 2020. The report, obtained by the Des Moines Register on Friday, said the total losses potentially exceed $28,440 in part due to the "unique nature" of the alleged theft.
