Des Moines Public Schools' students are planning to walk out Monday to protest legislative action — and they are doing it with the support of the staff and school administrators. "I think it's just important to know that students care and we're paying attention," said Lyric Sellers, DMPS Racial Justice and Equity group member and East High School student. DMPS Racial Justice and Equity, a student-led group with staff members, is protesting House File 813, which deals with expanding Iowa's charter school program, and House File 802, which impacts what can be taught during diversity and sensitivity trainings. The walkout is scheduled to begin at 1:45 p.m. Monday and protestors, who are able, will meet at the Iowa Capital steps at 2:10 p.m. Those who cannot attend the Capital gathering are encouraged to congregate outside their schools. The protest is open to middle and high school students and the public.
