the preliminary hearing continues today. emotions ran high during day one of the james holmes' preliminary hearing, as prosecutors laid out new evidence and testimony. >> i've got people running out of a theater that are shot. >> reporter: holmes is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others last july. through tears, the officer described rescuing the wounded. i knew i needed to get them to the hospital now, he said. i didn't want anyone else to die. the victim's families also packed the courthouse, including mary ellen hanson, who lost her 6-year-old niece, veronica. >> it's almost like you have to face the devil, as opposed to saying i don't want to know. >> reporter: the officers who arrested holmes at the theater's back exit also described looking into his dilated eyes. he was very, very relaxed. he seemed very detached from it all. holmes also did not react when witnesses identified him as the gunman.
