than the deep water horizon rig. the question is what kind of environmental damage will this fire and explosion do to the gulf that has already been through so much? it's just one more reminder, nora, of just how risky drilling for oil truly is. >> as you point out just how risky drilling for oil is, what's the news, certainly, with bp and the final kill on that? >> reporter: well, what they're trying to do today is to lift up the capping stack from the sea floor, the capping stack is what closed in the well. and once they do that, they will go down and latch on the blowout preventer. the blowout preventer acts like an emergency brake and failed in the mccondo well explosion. they are going to have to lift that up, it's 1 million pounds and they're going to have to lift it up a mile through the water. once that is done, a new bop is put on and once that is tested, they will finish the relief well
