Diversity requires an admissions process overhaul : Journal of the American Academy of PAs

Like a microcosm of our nation, the physician assistant (PA) profession faces a reckoning with racial justice. People historically marginalized in the United States—such as Black, Latinx, and Native/Indigenous individuals—are underrepresented in the ranks of PAs. Even more concerning, racial representation within the profession—especially as it pertains to Black PAs—has plummeted in the past decade. And the PA school admissions process, a system that rewards wealth and privilege at every turn, may be to blame.
A just and equitable profession should demographically reflect our nation. After all, talent and intelligence have a normal distribution throughout humankind—anyone, born anywhere, can have them. Without discriminatory barriers affecting one group more than another, we expect a population sample like the PA profession to reflect the country in which it exists. But the reality is far more skewed.
