Yes, the State of Louisiana may owe you money. No, it's not a scam.
The state's treasury office will spend the coming days mailing 33,000 unclaimed property checks to citizens across Louisiana, totaling more than $4.3 million. The mass rollout of checks comes after Treasurer John Schroder used tax records to update mailing addresses.Sign up for our Newsletters
"These are real dollars," Schroder told WDSU in an interview Saturday. "This is your money. Claim it."
Each year, businesses turn over millions of dollars in unclaimed cash, stocks, bonds, securities, and insurance proceeds to Schroder's office. These funds include payroll checks, old bank accounts, royalties, utility deposits, interest payments, stock certificates, and life insurance proceeds, Schroder said.
