The driver in a crash that killed a Ventura teen on Highway 101 in Ventura on June 20 was released from jail Friday even after prosecutors sought a bail increase during an emotional court hearing.
The driver, who has pleaded not guilty to multiple felony charges, was released primarily due to a recent state Supreme Court ruling concerning bail, courtroom proceedings indicated.
Two teenage girls in the car — neither wearing a seatbelt — were thrown from the Nissan as it overturned several times. One of the passengers, Ventura resident Chloe Arbuckle, 16, died at the scene. The other, a 17-year-old Oxnard resident, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center with major injuries. No update on her condition was available Friday.
