January is very often the month when people focus on resolutions and new beginnings. There are two ideas circulating worldwide during this month, and have been for many new years now â Dry January and Veganuary. I recently heard Dry January being discussed on the radio as it has become a global phenomenon with millions participating each year. The idea being to cut out alcohol for the month of January, as many feel that they certainly drank too much of the stuff during the festivities ! Dry January has some running related beginnings â as far back as 1942 a « Sober January » program was started in Finland and in the UK a young runner training for a semi-marathon reported and published her success in running after no alcohol during the month of January. These two events seem to have persuaded people that the no booze experiment is a good one in so many ways.
