Tyler Harris PERFECT STORM: Part of what Steve Bohr describes as the perfect storm affecting ag land transitions is the age of the landowner. While 25% of the land in Iowa is owned by people ages 55 to 64, 26% is owned by people ages 65 to 74, and 34% is owned by people ages 75 and older. While about 60% of the land in Iowa is owned by people ages 65 and older, two-thirds of the land will transition in the next 20 years. While most people who grew up on a farm are thankful for the experience, fewer and fewer people have had the opportunity over time. As Steve Bohr notes, it begs the question: Why would you ever stop farming? "Ultimately," Bohr says, "death is what forces us to transition."
