Family calls draft K-6 curriculum's use of Black Albertan settler's name 'tokenism'

The family of a Black Albertan settler included in the province’s draft K-6 curriculum is calling the decision a tokenization of her grandmother’s name and legacy.
Agnes Leffler Perry is listed among famous Black Albertans and their early settlement, but her granddaughter said the fact that the curriculum misrepresents her name, which is Agnes Leffler Perry Chaney, shows the writers failed to do their research.

Julianne Sévère said Tuesday that although Education Minister Adriana LaGrange is calling her grandmother a notable historical figure whose legacy should be honoured, Chaney was a very private person and school teacher whose name doesn’t belong in the document.
