Based on the Italian magical girl cartoon Winx Club, Fate: The Winx Saga debuted in January on Netflix. It centered around Bloom (Abigail Cowen), a teenager who believed she was human for most of her life before discovering her powerful fire fairy heritage. Whisked away to a magical boarding school, Bloom meets five other fairies: vain light fairy Princess Stella (Hannah van der Westhuysen), brash water fairy Aisha (Precious Mustapha), surly mind fairy Musa (Elisha Applebaum), and plucky earth fairy Terra (Eliot Salt). While the original series focused greatly on the friendships between the girls, the live-action show gave everything a more grim and dark overlay. Bloom’s quest to find more about her pasts ends up revealing secrets about covered-up war crimes and fearsome, yet charismatic, dictators.
