FBC The Claman Countdown July 13, 2024

Now spread to northern italy. This as travel freezes up and global case numbers approach the 77,000 mark. Coming up, weve got right here on the claman countdown the Luxury Travel company on the front line, high end destination site embark beyond is here on which countries they are now redirecting travelers to so that 100 gut punch to its China Business doesnt spell a tko to its bottom line. China has other problems than just the coronavirus. The white house has just hurled a new jab at top Telecom Giant and 5g powerhouse huawei. Huawei chief Security Officer andy purdy used to work at Homeland Security. Hes now with huawei. He is here and ready to push back against the administrations latest snub. And from the white house to sin city, the president trolling his democratic rivals in las vegas on the eve of the nevada caucuses. We are live on the ground as the oval office incumbent looks to trump any blue wave from trying to break out in this key purple state. Plus, we have brand new breaking major drama in the Harvey Weinstein trial. The jury deadlocked and charlie breaks it on the next big megamerger that could be in the works. Less than an hour to the closing bell, lets start the claman countdown. Liz folks, we have breaking news here in manhattan. The jury deliberating in Harvey Weinsteins rape trial has just indicated that it is deadlocked on the most serious charges. The judge has told the jury to keep working toward a unanimous verdict on all charges. Now, the jury initially, this is what we know because its just broken in the last 18 minutes, has initially asked if it were permissible for them to be a hung jury on two counts of predatory Sexual Assault while reaching a unanimous verdict on other charges. Predatory Sexual Assault is the most serious charge. It could net the disgraced hollywood mogul life in prison. Deliberations are supposed to have ended a short while ago, 3 00 p. M. Eastern but now at 3 03 p. M. Eastern, still going on. Perhaps they are so close, we are watching this for you. What we will do is bring you the latest as we have it. We have a producer, we have a reporter there. Stay tuned on the Harvey Weinstein case. Lets get to tesla. After an unbelievable two weeks, tesla is the best performing stock on the nasdaq this week, up 12 . Consumer reports is calling the tesla model 3 its top electric vehicle pick for 2020. Stocks down slightly today but ceo elon musk is closer as well to building his german gigafactory after getting clearance to move what does that mean . To move trees in a parcel of land in the country despite environmentalists objections. Lets go to deere. Deere shares are hitting a record as the Farm Equipment maker reports better than expected First Quarter results. The company says waning trade tensions with china boosting farmer optimism, but they also admitted, heres why a 7. 6 gain is pretty interesting, deere also said that it expects to have its Road Construction Equipment Sales dinged in asia due to the coronavirus and also, they will be taking a 40 million expedited freight cost, again due to the coronavirus, but the stock and investors dont seem to care. It is hitting an alltime high. Lets go to sprint. Sprint shares rallying under the revised terms of the companys 41 billion merger with tmobile. Controlling shareholder softbank took on the Higher Exchange ratio while sprint shareholders remain unaffected. Lets hope the marriage of tmobile and sprint is a happier union than the remarriage of viacom and cbs. Avert the childrens eyes. Take a look at the stock, down 3. 33 today but shareholders are infuriated a day after the media giant swung to a shocking 258 million loss in the fourth quarter, its First Quarter since viacom and cbs remarried. A year ago, viacom had posted profits of 887 million. So from profits to losses, boom, yesterday in shareholders saw a selloff of 18 . As you see, the stock is losing another 3. 33 to 28. 32. On top of all of this, shareholders are now questioning Ceo Bob Bakish and his leadership, just as viacom cbs announces a new streaming service. People arent hearing that. They are only hearing the bad news today on this friday. To stock markets overall. We may be off session lows at the moment, but we should just tell you earlier today, the Dow Jones Industrials were down 327 points. The major averages are on pace to close lower for the first time in three weeks, and again, i know i sound like a little bit of a broken record, but i love this on growing coronavirus fears. And on a couple days this week, we saw waning coronavirus fears and the stock market up. Folks, it is still a very serious situation. All of it dragging down oil prices which were down just under 1 today. We do have them down. 8 at the moment in the aftermarket. Oil, though, did pull out a gain of 2 for the week. Let me flip to lululemon, issuing an update on its china operations. Want to give you some numbers here. The majority of lululemon, the yoga outfit company, no longer seethrough yoga pants but very tight, 38 stores in the region, all of them have been closed since february 3rd but they are saying that some are now operating on a reduced schedule. Heres the problem that the claman countdown has with that. Lulu didnt say how many, they didnt give any specific numbers on how many of these stores had been closed and are now operating. Stock, they are seeing it too, down 3 . Investors dont like the opacity there. And chinas Public Health officials have altered yet again the criteria they are using for counting how many people are truly infected with the coronavirus. As of right now, there are a believed 76,700 confirmed cases and at least 2,249 deaths. But do you really believe the numbers . You guys know i do not. It appears that certainly by the World Health Organization that they were bending over backwards to compliment the chinese when it was the chinese who underreported the numbers of people who had been sickened and five Million People rushed out of wuhan before they could close the borders. I do not believe the numbers. I think the chinese are very much underreporting the numbers. If you believe chinas official numbers which you know if you watch this program, i personally dont, just 20 days ago, 8,000 were sickened. Today, 75,286. Some of those were from more than two weeks ago. So what will break us out of this fearful market cycle and what is the best trade in this breakout event . Lets get to our traders on this friday. Matt cheslock, i think it is extremely dangerous to trade this market. If you are in, you should just stay in, correct . Equities here are almost at alltime highs but you are seeing some of the contraplays. Gold is near sevenyear highs, even higher than that. We are seeing bond yields at historic lows. Someone is going to be right on this trade. But we are seeing some profittaking across some of the chip sector, that was the highest flying sector we have seen over the last couple months. So its not a surprise to see them take a little bit out of that and then find another home for it. Liz can i just interrupt . Look at gold, up 27. It has had an unbelievable couple of weeks, even as the u. S. Greenback also hits threeyear highs on the u. S. Dollar index. Its at 1,647 per troy ounce, yet we are looking also, and again, dont want to get too wonky but we are looking at a yield curve inversion. This is when, folks, the treasury market starts flashing a warning signal between the twoyear and the fiveyear. Normally the fiveyear would return more but right now, its the twoyear that has a higher yield. What do you make of that, matt . I will tell you right now that everyone is kind of speculating on how much damage the coronavirus is going to do to the economic side of this. We know how impactful it is to the health side. We need to cure that first. But everyones guessing how much impact its going to have on gdp in the First Quarter. Most people think it will have a back end effect positively on the second half of this year, once we get this under control. So we have to find out if this is a oneoff. We saw the Service Number today come out below 50, showing, you know, contraction. But now theyre saying that could just be a oneoff. We have to wait and see what the ism number comes out at the end of the month. Theres a lot to look at. You are just guessing right now. Liz chris robinson, what do you think . I think you have seen the fear trade, right. Thats why youve got the dollar at threeyear highs. Youve got gold, what, 200 or 300 away from its alltime high. 1921 was the high in 2011. We are closing in on that. You have people buying safe havens. I think once the numbers are real, once we find out, you know, who is telling the truth, then you will see the market correct. So its a situation where theres going to be opportunity and risk. The good thing is, if you are long stocks like most of our viewers are, we are within 1 or 2 and this market has held so strong despite all the fear. So the markets giving you a chance to again reevaluate, the market is giving you a chance to take a second look. If you need to raise cash, you know, i like raising cash when we are 1 or 2 off the highs as opposed to after we have 5 , 10 , 15 correction if thats where were heading. Everybody is in a good situation. I would say its a good time to take a second look at what your risk is. Liz again, phil, a lot of these countries, we are going to talk about italy in a minute because a brand new hot spot of this virus has just popped up in northern italy, but you do have to look at the fact that central banks, they will run in and put a pillow down underneath to make sure nothing gets too bruised. Phil . Oh, im sorry. No phil flynn. Never mind. Our thanks to matt and chris. We want to issue this update. The judge in the Harvey Weinstein rape trial has now in the last minute officially released the jurors for the weekend. The deliberations in this trial of the disgraced mogul will resume on monday. We also have this. President trump is about to take the stage in las vegas for another keep America Great rally, trying to capture the spotlight on the eve of the Nevada Democratic president ial caucuses. Hillary vaughn has been following everything from both sides of the aisle right there on the ground in vegas. Hillary, who is getting all the attention . Reporter liz, whats interesting, this is the front page of the local paper, the Las Vegas Review journal and trump is dominating the entire front page with two front page stories on the front page of the local paper here. Hes also here in the state. He made it a tradition to hold a rally in the voting state the night before polls or the day before polls open. Hes doing it again today, putting 2020 democrats on defense, but we do have those democrats running for president , scurrying around the state today, trying to really focus on getting voters to turn out, early voting has been under way here in nevada for at least four days. So the final pitch that these candidates are making or trying to convince people who have not already voted and maybe on the fence about voting to actually turn out and support them. They also are in a tight race when it comes to fundraising numbers. The focus has been on money. Mayor Pete Buttigieg really giving an appeal to his supporters that he needs 13 million in fundraising to be competitive in super tuesday states, because he and all the other candidates are up against a billionaire, former new york city mayor mike bloomberg, who spent 156 million just in the 14 states that vote on super tuesday on ads that will air in those states, and Bernie Sanders spent 11 million in super tuesday states, but then you have candidates like former Vice President joe biden and mayor Pete Buttigieg that have spent zero dollars so far on super tuesday states. Liz hillary, thank you very much. Up next, huaweis top u. S. Executive is here. Andy purdy ready to punch back against the white houses latest snub. What is it about huawei that has the u. S. So concerned . The claman countdown will be right back. Every year, our analysts visit thousands of companies, in a multitude of countries, where we get to know the people that drive a companys growth and gain new perspectives. Thats why we go beyond the numbers. T. Rowe price. Invest with confidence. Thats why we go beyond the numbers. [ fastpaced drumming ] and now for their service to the community, we present limu emu doug with this key to the city. [ applause ] its an honor to tell you that Liberty Mutual customizes your Car Insurance so you only pay for what you need. And now we need to get back to work. [ applause and band playing ] only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liz did you hear about this . The white house today announcing a 5g fiesta that will draw a gathering of the whos who in the telecom world. I think we are working carefully, closely with nokia and ericsson. We will be holding some kind of conference in about a month, we will have a lot of them in the white house to have discussion. Im shower ture the president wn us for part. That will include samsung. That will include all of our guys. Liz all of our guys except one. Chinese Telecom Giant huawei. Todays snub comes as the u. S. Rushes to build out its own 5g network as cheaply as possible without the help of the leader in the race to 5g and a top target on the administrations suspected spy list. If youre wondering what huawei must think about all of this, wonder no more. Joining us live, huaweis chief Security Officer, andy purdy. Welcome to the show. Thanks for coming on. My pleasure. Liz you surprised you didnt get an invite . Theres one invitation we would like to receive. That would be an invitation for a Transparency Initiative in the United States. Liz meaning . Lets have open competition so we can see the facts of which equipments better and lets have closed door sessions where each Telecom Equipment provider comes in and answers tough questions from government and private sector experts about what were doing for assurance and transparency. That kind of Transparency Initiative would help make America Greater. Liz well, i like that. Thats a great speech that you just opened up with, but President Trump has deemed you guys, huawei, a security threat. How do you vow thiew this 5g me when your company is excluded and you know why, because the president feels there are all kinds of back doors within the huawei equipment and National Security people do, too . I think the position of the United States has been theyre afraid that in the future huawei would be forced by the china government to implant back doors. This is all part of the geopolitical competition between the u. S. And china and unfortunately, the u. S. Resident emphasizing the need for Technology Industrial policy is instead trying to hurt china by hurting huawei and were not thinking about the negative consequences to tens of thousands of american jobs. Liz let me ask you pointblank, has huawei ever gathered secret or proprietary information on the u. S. Government or u. S. Companies that it obtained or derived from electronic surveillance or socalled back doors built into huawei equipment . No. We have not. And in fact, one part of the Transparency Initiative this country needs is to have greater visibility on everybody who has access to telecom and mobile operator networks. We have special provisions to make sure that only after written permission and only with every keystroke of the computer login recorded so theres complete visibility of what we access, when, and whats done with it. That kind of transparency, that kind of assurance is what all Companies Need to provide so we can prove were not subject to undue influence of the china government to turn over data. We cant turn over data we dont have. Liz well, one thing is that the United States has said it has evidence that huawei has been using its equipment to do secret surveillance. Now, there has been no evidence that has been put out there, is that correct . We are still waiting on that. They would say it is top secret and we cant put it out at the moment. Actually, i have never really heard that allegation, but recently, they have said that we created some capability that is actually controlled by the telecom and mobile operators to be able to get access. Theres no evidence of that. They allegedly declassified the information. They have allegedly given it to the uk and other countries in europe. And basically, the question is wheres the beef . If its unclassified, turn it over. Liz would you say this is all just political then, from where you sit . I think theres a geopolitical issue between the u. S. And china. For years the u. S. Has been unhappy with what china has been doing, so because of this, theres a bipartisan effort to say enough, china, we have had enough, so i think the u. S. Is bending over backwards and taking the chance of hurting americans more than huawei in their effort to fight against china. So thats the context thats affecting everything. Liz earlier this week, the federal judge was looking at this one lawsuit that huawei had filed, basically you guys were challenging the federal
