You know, it just seems to me that we are talking about almost every chinese app and the reason, dagen, is because american apps are not allowed in china so the issue chinese apps in trust. Its just also a question of basic fairness and reciprocity and that would mean every chinese app. India actually went to a pretty big extent banning 59 chinese apps or thinking of another 258, this is the direction that we should be going as well because this is just reciprocity. Dagen i think the message is clear that this isnt just about tiktok but what kind of chill potentially does this send through corporate world, the Business Community because how does china and the communist party there react because again, so Many American businesses do business there. We still import a great deal of our products from china even food, so how does this play out in the coming months as the economy is just trying to get back on its feet globally . Gordon well, of course, theres going to be tension but, you know, the relationship between china and the u. S. Just has been unbalanced and unfair and President Trump is doing something about it which is really important so, for instance, if youre the owner of waymo, youre going to be pretty upset but if youre General Motors youre worried about retaliation for what we may do with may mow, so theres waymo and theres a lot of things that can ripple through but its important that we do this because the relationship is fundamentally unfair to the u. S. And resulting in wounds to the u. S. Because china has been using position to steal information, surveil and to manipulate u. S. Users, a whole bunch of things that are completely unacceptable. Dagen shouldnt this have been addressed in the trade deal . Gordon the trade deal was broken into two phases because this is a very difficult issue and it wasnt going to be resolved. Dagen why do a deal in the first place, gordon . If our National Security is at risk, why broker a deal with them . This should very paramount. Im just raising the question. Gordon i dont think there should have been a phase 1 deal anyway. I agree with you on that point but there are all sorts of issues. Its not just these. Its a question of staid subsidies in china and predatory policies that apply to u. S. Companies there including policies that result in taking of information and source code, so, yeah, a whole bunch of things that should have been dealt with and as i said, i think the best thing to do is for the u. To cut its ties with china for a number of Different Reasons because we tried to do this for 3 decades now and we have been completely unsuccessful in obtaining reciprocal, fair trading relationships. Dagen lee, this is what you do for a living, what do americans feel and think about china, the threat of china, where do they fall on that regardless of political affiliation . Lee so this is one area that republicans and democrats agree on which is a very, very few. Two and three americans are very concerned about the world that china is playing right now. They are worried about trade relationship, they are very worried about the security issues, they are very worried about intellectual property and they are very worried about their own jobs so this issue is front and center and look at polling on who they think is going to be better at dealing with china. Its really head to head and for a long time President Trump did lead on china and hes not right now, so i think there needs to be a real heavy hand here and very clear articulation from both biden and trump on exactly what the difference is and how they will deal with china. Dagen my regrets and apologies on that, but we are running 4, 5 trilliondollar annual deficits. Who are we going to borrow the money from . Is the fed with all debt or put in a position with china, we need china to borrow, i mean, to lend to the United States, but we are putting pressure on them at the same time. Mitch china holds national debt. Our sovereign debt is reserve currency for the world and who is buying it, Central Banks around the world including china. I think they need to do that and one of the ways they quote, unquote manipulate currency and other countries do that is through buying debt of other countries. I think its okay that they own it and okay that other countries own it. I dont think its the leverage that they have over us that most people think. It would be devastating if they started dumping u. S. Treasuries. The republicans were saying how dare you nevertheless the republicans knew that this extra 600 a week was going to expire at the end of july and ive raised this over and over. Where were they in june, where were they for the whole month of july for the most part . Well, thats a question that nancy pelosi has been asking because as you know the house passed the 3 trilliondollar package back in may and its only been in the past week that serious negotiations have begun even though everybody knew that on last friday those enhanced Unemployment Benefits were going to expire and also the eviction moratorium, you know, its august third now. The rent is due for this month and we know that all, millions of americans may have hard trouble making rent. Dagen do you have any sense what they can cobble together to make sure that all of this money doesnt disappear because i do know that its very difficult for the states to restart a benefit if its a different amount, so if its 200 bucks until the late september, that was the idea and the republican plan. It makes it very difficult now that this is the 600 is gone away and the states to kind of kick that money back out to people who are on unemployment. Well, democrats have two objections on what the republicans propose, one is 200 versus 600. As you say 600 is what the amount was before democrats say 200 is not enough at this moment. Also the timetable, the republican proposal would have gone through september, democrats want this to be set through january to get people some certainty about whats going to be ahead for the next few months. They made progress on saturday, theyre not there yet. Dagen governor huckabee, i note gop idea was extra 200 a week and then go to formula that would be 70 of what someone earned, but how feasible is that and is there really any downside for the republicans getting on board at this point with the extra 600 per week. I know that its its creating a problem for employers trying to get people back on the job but from a political perspective you just keep the money flowing, governor. Yeah, but theres a difference between keeping the money flowing and really stimulating the economy. You ultimately dont stimulate the economy but throwing money government at something without a strategic reason and if youre paying people more money to not work then you are to work people arent stupid, they are going to stay home and not take a job that will pay them less, so i think the republicans have got to stick with that, if they dont, they look stupid like the democrats look right now pushing that. Dagen im going to just add that the Paycheck Protection Program was thrown together so quickly and the money ended up im going to start calling lambo loans. Did you read the story of guy in miami who basically stole 4 million in the from the ppp and went out and brought a new lamborghini, he got bust today steal the money and living with his momma with angle bracelet apparently. Joe biden delaying Vice President pick. Susan, on this, do you have any sense of who is the front runner here . You know, i think the people who are talking dont know and the people who know arent talking. This is classic Vice President ial selection. This is actually the 11th campaign weve covered and we have seen this cover when theres races like this where theres a point that everybody is jocking and no one is quite sure what the candidate is going to want to do and i know its a messy process and that has stressed biden supporters but also has purpose when you get some of the things out of karen bass, for instance, is this determinative in whether she could be the Vice President ial pick. They want to find out that out before they choose her and one of the reasons before we see the messy jocking happening between karen bass and susan rice and Kamala Harris and elizabeth warren. Lee, do you have who would be you think for joe biden who brings to the table something that biden really needs . Well, you know, i think theres a couple of them and im not sure that they are likely candidates for joe biden to pick. I think that duckworth would be an amazing pick for him. Fact that shes a veteran, first, you know, female minority senator, she gave birth during while she was in office, aspiring to woman and inspired speaker. I think that would get some people very excited. You know, mitch and i were just talking about val demings. She can neutralize some of the concerns about the police community, about the defunding of the police, i think she could help in florida. A lot of the candidates that i think hes picking are very, very, its a different thing. When you look at susan rice i think that makes joe biden be very much saying we are going to go back to the obama years, we will come back together and that could be on interesting thing. We will hear benghazi if that happens although that could be interesting pick for him because folks on the left to go back to the way things were before and i think we are seeing even in the idea that hes talking about build back better, i think thats what hes saying. Joining me now Asset Management chief strategist, dave nelson, michael lee, first up, all eyes on tiktok, microsoft looking to buy tiktoks u. S. Business after President Trump threatened to ban the popular chinese app over security concerns. The president also looking to potentially ban over chinese apps according to the secretary of state mike pompeo. He told maria that on sunday morning futures yesterday. Dave, well start with you. What is your outlook for microsoft and technology in general . Im not sure theres a direct correlation between microsoft and technology. However, the administration is sending a direct message to other Technology Firms with regards to hookups in china. Anything that deals with the forced transfer of intellectual property or puts american citizen data at risk, the president s going to come out against that and the president has kind of rewritten the rules with china at this point. Frankly, i think americans embrace it. I think americans today understand that china is an adversary in every sense of the word. And its not just foreign policy. Its not just trade. Its really invading our space here and he doesnt want to put american citizen data at risk. Dagen we just had last week a hearing on capitol hill with google, apple, facebook, and amazon about the strai stranglen technology in this country that these Large Companies have and when a competitor comes along thats a legitimate one for facebook, you have one of the largest Technology Companies jumping up to buy it. Dave, how does that make sense . Look, right now youre hitting on an important topic. The Top Five Companies by market can cap in the United States represent just 16 of the earnings and were getting extremely concentrated at this point and it begs a question for investors, how concerned should we be . Fortunately right now with Interest Rates as low as they are the valuations of these companies are still reasonable at this point because securities analysis starts with the rate which is essentially zero at this point. So theres a risk there and the concentration in these hands is quite large. For microsoft, this is a real coup for them. Its not their first foray into social media. They have an acquisition with linkedin. They invested 240 million with facebook. This rounds it out nicely if it happens. Dagen facebook launched reel as a competitor. They are persuading them to use facebooks new service. Now you have a potentially big money deep pocketed competitor coming at them. So it makes it more difficult for facebook to compete potentially. Lets move on to stimulus gridlock, lawmakers are no closer to another coronavirus stimulus package as theyre stuck on the 600 per week federal unemployment benefit. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi set to meet with the Trump Administration officials today. Michael lee, what are the market implications of this potentially does anybody believe its going away . No. Were getting some sort of stimulus. Its just a matter of how, what and when. I think the hangup on the 600 a week that its keeping people from working, i dont know that its nonsense but i think the number is far less than many would conceive and that if we did continue paying 600 a week to those on the unemployment roles it will have a greater effect on the economy than cutting it to 200 and getting people back to work. If you make less than the 600 a week, what type of impact are you having on the overall economy. I think republicans should give on that. But basically not bend the knee or give in on any of the other programs like a trillion dollars in blank checks to state stimulus and some of those other items. I think this is the first time weve seen true direct fiscal stimulus to the entire country and its worked really, really well. I think the people that are getting this unemployment insurance, many of them are unemployed at no fault of their own and theyre probably working in blue states that are going to continue to be locked down until november the fourth when a lot of this i believe will magically disappear. So i think the republicans should give in on that. But not really any other aspect of the stimulus. I believe that the market is saying were going to get something, its going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of a trillion dollars or more, otherwise we would have seen some sort of selloff. Dagen i heard from welders and Oil Field Workers who are relying on this extra 600 per week to support their families and they cant go back to work. And suffice it to say, they didnt vote blue. Lets move on to earnings in focus, another important round of earnings set for this week. Disney, uber, cvs health, this coming as investors are eyeing the july jobs report due out on july. Chief investment strategist mark lusheni is here. What are you watching this week . Its a big week. I think we have 129 s p 500 Companies Reporting this week. We had 25 of the s p report so far. Id like to see the continuation of the thing weve seen so far, 83 of companies that reported earnings have so far beat earnings estimates. Thats deceivingly high. Its one of the best quarters on record dating back 25 years. Not only are beats happening regularly, but significant incremental boost to earnings, 22 over consensus estimates is also encouraging. Were seeing 2020 end as well as 2021 earnings estimates continued to get marked up and thats encouraging news to help support valuations in the s p 500 index. Dagen thank you so much. Well, i think the sides are still very far apart. I think youre going to see Mitch Mcconnells drawn a line if the sand as relates to Liability Protection and democrats and nancy pelosi want to extend the 600 a week. I talked to Business Leaders and Business Owners in my district and that additional 600 a week is keeping people out of the workforce because theyre making more money on unemployment than they would working. So they cant even fill the billets of their employees they need to fill for their businesses in manufacturing and the Restaurant Industry and in the Service Industry if thats going to remain in place. I think republicans are going to be very hesitant to include that in the overall package. Dagen you see cases spiking even in your home state and businesses that cannot reopen, not everybody collecting that extra 600 per week is staying at home because of the amount of money. They cant go back to work. So youre still taking that away from potentially millions of americans. You think that benefits you . I think as long as as they get Unemployment Compensation benefit every circumstance is going to be different. Im telling you when i talk to Business Leaders in my community, thats inhibiting them from getting employees back. They talk to people, former employees and their former employees are saying im not going to come back to work because im making more money on unemployment. The people that i talked to its definitely a factor in inhibiting businesses businessem getting people back to work. Dagen they can report those individuals to basically to the unemployment offices. If people refuse to come back to work, you the businesses can report them. Well, every state works different. We just allocate the money at the federal level and the state deals with how they do that program. So if thats something we can do here in florida, i certainly can let our Business Leaders know that. Dagen i want to get governor huckabee in here. What should the republicans do here . Because again, theyre negotiating with nancy pelosi. They do have the upper hand in the sense that the democrats in the house passed something in may, three andahalf trillion dollars, granted much bigger than what the republicans want to do. But they at least acted preemptively rather than waiting until the last minute. Mike lets keep in mind that the first stimulus package was done very quickly and there wasnt a lot of time to think about it. This one has to be done with more strategic focus. I agree he with the congressman, you cant pay people more money to not work than they get working. Thats something that congress and the states have to work out so you are making sure that people who cant work, they get the money. They need the money. They ought to have the money. But people who can get back into the economy should because its very simple. What behavior you reward, you get more of it. Behavior that you consequence you get less of it. You want people to get back to work. Thats the ultimate stimulus to the economy. That has to be the focus. Dagen microsoft confirms it is in talks to buy tiktoks u. S. Operations, hoping to have the deal done by september 15. Congressman, your thoughts on this . Well, we know for a fact that theyre sharing information with the Chinese Communist party. That is very troubling to me, also troubling to the president which is why the president talked about banning it. I think if the president and microsoft can work out some type of agreement, then i would be comfortable with that. But if the president and microsoft cant work out an agreement, i support the president and banning tiktok in the United States if theyre sharing all of this day da and all of this information data and all of this information, all of this user information with the Chinese Communist party. Dagen just to be clear, tiktok i know the way the law works in china, under chinese Law Companies operating there must comply with any government request for data. Tiktok said repeatedly it would never hand over such data. So just to be clear on whats been said about that. But are you comfortable with a giant u. S. Corporation becoming that much bigger and literally buying up one of the only legitimate competitors to part of, say, facebooks business . Well, thats one of the things that we talked about in the last hearing, the tech hearing last week. Those are the types of of things that need to be discussed as these Bigger Companies gobble up the smaller companies. A lot of the smaller companies, thats what they try to do is get big enough so they get bought off, get a payout and they can move on and then the companies can continue those products. So thats certainly something that we need to look at. Im more concerned about the safety and security of the American People having served in the military, so if theres a National Security issue with tiktok sharing that information with the Chinese Communist party ill lean on the side of the president with this one. Dagen congressman, great to see you. Great to see you. Dagen staying out of the debate, an interesting strategy, question mark, for the Presumptive Democratic nominee, joe biden. Dagen avoiding debates, former White House Press secretary under president Clinton Joe Lockhart offering Campaign Advice to former Vice President joe biden. Its not really a debate if only one side is willing to tell the truth. Giving him that sort of National Forum to continue to get to 21,000 or 22,000 lives, i think just isnt worth it for the democrats or for biden. Dagen in an oped, lockhart saying that biden should ignore poll leads and run like hes, quote, 10 points behind. I think hes already doing that in some ways if you listen to fellow democrats. Lee, can biden make it should he skip the debates . That seems a little crazy of an idea. Lee its a really crazy idea because i think that people have a right to a debate so we can make an informed decision when we watch them over three real debates. I think if you look at Vice President bidens campaign, i would define his strategy as this of one of do no harm. We dont hear much from him. When we do its very, very scripted, very, very planned, very edited, very not authentic and realtime. But i think thats in large part because Vice President biden has never really been a great campaigner. Hes done well once hes in office, hes very likable in many ways, once hes not running anymore. As a campaigner, he gets awkward, he has a hard time. Weve seen it before. I think the strategy is very much this, lets stay out of the public light, do the bare minimum, hope we roll as best as we can with that. I think that might be his best strategy in this moment. But i dont think its wise. I dont think that its the right thing for the American People for him to sit out of the debates. Dagen i came up with the campaign slogan, cocooning is winning, like you win by hiding in your house. But lee yeah. Dagen governor huckabee, in terms of potentially skipping a debate or the debates that would raise the issue in four words. What are you hiding . He cant do that. Mike no, he cant skip the debates. I thought it was ridiculous for joe lockhart to suggest it and especially trying to say its because the president has lied and im thinking this is from a press secretary to the only president in u. S. History who admitted to perjury under oath while he was the president of the United States. So the source for Joe Lockharts information by the way was the Washington Post and we know how reliable they are in relationship to President Trump. The truth is, joe bidens got to come out of the hidy hole. Hes got to surface. Hes like a submarine. Every now and then youve got to come up for air. Hes got to stand on that stage with donald trump. I dont blame him for not wanting to. Ive been there. Its not the most pleasant thing in the world to do. But im telling you, its going to be the defining moment of the campaign when the two of them are on that stage. Crime on the rise, 2020 seeing a nationwide spike in homicides. The wall street journal reporting this is a piece authored by jon hilsenrath, frequent guest on the program, found that the 50 largest cities in the United States have seen a 24 increase so far this year. That is in homicides. In chicago this weekend alone, nine people were killed, at least 23 injured. The youngest victim, a 9yearold boy. In new york city, shootings for 2020 so far this year surpassing all of 2019s reported shootings. Joining us now, former nypd lieutenant, Pace University law he professor, darrin porcher. Great to see you as always. What do you contribute the spike . Thanks for having me. Dagen jon hilsenraths analysis found a double digit increase in 36 cities among homicides. Other types of Violent Crime fell. What do you make of that . This is a culmination of three different aspects. We have to look to the pandemic, the recession, and the backlash in connection with Police Tactic as relates to the death of george floyd. The tr triangulation of those components produced a rise in homicides. Law enforcement is jockeying to get their arms around in the wake of the antipolice sentiment in our country. This is the time we need to stand behind Law Enforcement. More so particularly the practitioners. The elected officials need to allow the practitioners to effectively evidenc eradicate te violence in our nation. Many elected officials have folded to the sentiment of protesters which has allowed the demonstrations to run rough shod. Mike how demoralizing is it for Police Officers out on the streets that are supposed to stop crime when their mayors and some cases their governors are standing more with the mobs than they are the Police Officers . Well, this is something that we see reflective of places like new york city, portland, and seattle, washington. And i give you an example here in new york city. Just over the past week, weve had 400 plus officers that have filed for retirement in the wake of mayor de blasios inability to allow the practitioners to effectively focus on the crime reduction. We have to look at the morale component. When i say the morale component, as you mentioned, governor huckby, we have many elected officials that are bowing to the sentiments of the elected officials based on whats being driven by the mob. The elected officials have to understand that they are the focal point of the social contract in introducing Police Services to protect our of society in connection with the public safety. That just hasnt happened. We need the Law Enforcement and the elected officials to coalesce behind a strategy thats sound. Law enforcement or the quote, unquote, boots on the ground are ready and fit for the challenge. However, our elected officials in many cases are placing a more tore rum on policescar moratorium on policing. Dagen do you think that more cities become part of operation legend, which again is not what happened in portland p. It is targeted Law Enforcement or federal officers going into areas, it was expanded last week to cleveland, detroit and mill way you key, to name three cities where you have federal officers or federal enforcement going in to help in an investigative role. Do you think more of that is going to be needed . Its interesting. I hear a lot of the sentiment coming from a lot of the cities, more specifically democratic controlled mayors that are saying theyre unwilling to accept resources from the federal government. I worked in the nypd for 20 years. And on many occasions i coalesced behind federal task force that focused on the investigative and apprehension component. We have the dea, atf and dea, atf working in these cities throughout the country on a regular basis. This is more broadening or widening the tent sotospeak. Its been happening for years on end. So i really commend the president for stepping in and when i hear the backlash from a lot of these democratic mayors, its more hyperbole than anything else because this has been an ongoing process for years on end. We just heard the recent naming of operation legend but the truth of the matter is, this is something thats always been moving forward. Dagen lee carter, again, it becomes a political issue. If youre a democratic mayor, regardless of the violence and the death and the murder, they will maybe accept the help, say in chicago but then continue to talk and message against the president and the federal government. Lee yes, its a really, really fascinating thing to watch right now because the talking points of the left right now as theyre looking at what the president is doing, with all of the going in for aid, going in for help, theyre saying this is actually the president making an alarmist move, escalating the tensions that are there, saying this is him trying to make a platform for his law and order mess average i think thats a risky strategy on their part but that is very much what theyre trying to say, while the president in many cases, you know, many believe is actually going in and trying to help. So i think the ultimate question in the election is what do americans believe is going to be the truth, what is it thats really going on in the urban centers as we are seeing the facts are the facts. Crime is rising and what does that mean by the part of the democratic leadership of these cities and what does it mean for what people are going to want as far as law and order going forward. Dagen darrin, final word to you on this. I think that were in a state of accry mo acrimony as a. Although weve had pitfalls with the pandemic, this is the time to coalesce behind Law Enforcement with the police and Community Relationship that neons needs tneeds to be joinedt separated. We have succeeded through great times in the nations history. As a result, we need to do whats best for gaining the trust of the public and i just think that theres a majority of people that were behind law ebb enforcement and the minority of people that are in the state of acrimony. We want to focus on the majority of. The majority wants public safety. Dagen its not just gun crime and gun violence, its just a woman got run over by a car in a hit and run and killed in my neighborhood over the weekend, people i know have walked out of their homes trying to go to work and been harassed and robbed. Im just people are just literally leaving their apartment buildings, hoping not to get knocked in the head. Yeah, its unfortunate. But these are troubling times. But im confident that the practitioners and Law Enforcement will be able to prevail. This is one of these things that we need the right elected officials at the switch and unfortunately in places like new york city, portland, chicago and seattle, the mayors or the publicly elected officials are doing whats not right, which is subsequently holding that population at harm and hutting them at great risk of endangerment.
