Bidens phone. Its been a feature of american politics since candidates first learned to eat churros. But for the democratic nominee, this time its taken on crucial new significance. From the moment President Trump launched his campaign in 2015 with an attack on some Illegal Immigrants from mexico, the president s been denounced by many commentators as a racist whos risen on the negative votes of white supremacists, but that storys taken an odd turn of late. A fox news poll shows that the president has support of 41 of latino voters, thats against 56 for mr. Biden and up from less than 30 of the vote that mr. Trump got in 2016. Democrats are alarmed about this trend, hence mr. Bidens emergency visit to florida. Arizona and nevada, two other swing states with large hispanic populations, may also be trending in the same direction. So whats going on . Republican candidates, remember, onced had high hopes among hispanic voters. In 2004 george w. Bush got an estimated 44 of the latino vote. But since then the partys seemed to lose ground. Now, most pundits suggested this was because of republicans perceived hostility to ilLegal Immigration though some of that was, perhaps, questionable. If youve been through the arduous and costly process as an immigrant to enter the United States lawfully, you dont necessarily look to kindly on those who jump too kindly on those who jump the wall. The at the Republican NationalConvention Last month, a number of speakers of latin heritage seemed to emphasize the partys i appeal as americans who are vital for the nations success. I am so grateful to america, the place where i was able to build my American Dream through hard work and determination. President trump knows the american story was written by people just like you and i who love our country and take risks to build a future for our families and neighbors. I may be a cuban born, but i am 100 american. Gerry one other fact, the summer of protests over black lives matter. Now, these demonstrations which have often been violent have alarmed some latino voters. They look at a Democratic Party that seems to be embracing a kind of binary prospect of good and evil, and they wonder where i think stand in that. Here to diswhats going on in this discuss we me is councilwoman victoria seeman, the first assemblywoman ever aelected to the nevada assembly. Thank you very much for joining us. Thank you for having me. Gerry so democrats do seem to be running scared. They seem alarmed with whats going on with the latino vote, should they be . Yeah, i think they should. Its going to take more than pandering to get the vote, and what President Trump has done for hispanics and everyone as far as the economy, the low Unemployment Rate precovid, you just cant compare it with the biden obama administration. Gerry i think you were campaigning with President Trump recently in nevada. North dakota, of course nevada, of course, voted democratic last time. Is it realistic to think that President Trump could actually win the state back from democrats . Well, he only lost by three points in his first election in the state of nevada. Its a very swing state, and he has 60 paid staff and has been here in nevada and has already contacted over 2 million voters here. And, again, hispanics come to this country for opportunity, and thats what President Trump has given not only hispanics, but everyone. Gerry i mean, there is, as you saw, they come said, they come from a variety owltures, and there is cull chutures, and theres a tendency to lump them all together. Thats not right, is it . No, but the things that everybody wants, including hispanics good jobs, good opportunity, Good Health Care and, number one, Public Safety. They see that President Trump delivers. Gerry now, President Trump famously said some pretty, pretty tough things about Illegal Immigrants from mexico, of course, when he launched his campaign. Hes talked in pretty tough terms generally about and taken a pretty tough stance the on some, on immigration, on issues relating to immigration. Doesnt that, has that not harmed him with a lot of latino voters who are themselves either immigrants or they have family who would like to be immigrants . No, because immigrants who come here legally and american latinos really want to see Legal Immigration reformed. And they want to stop the ilLegal Immigration. And so i think President Trump is looking at that, and i think hes done a very good job. Gerry what more does the Republican Party, perhaps does President Trump need to do in the remaining few weeks of his campaign now to convince more latino voters who do seem to be coming to the republican camp to vote for him . I think theyre convinced by his policies; lower taxes, lower regulation. Again, latinos come here for opportunity. This is the land that they can come here with lower taxes and lower regulations and create businesses, and thats really why they come here, for that opportunity. So he needs to just continue with his policies. His policies are great for hispanicss, and theyre great for everyone. Weve seen this surging unrest i across the country over the summer, democrats have embraced it very enthusiastically and, of course, a lot of these are happening in democratrub cities. What effect do you think that has on latino voters . Well, across the board this has helped President Trump because i know talking to my constituents that Public Safety is the most important thing for folks, and they dont feel that the Democrat Party cares about Public Safety. And president donald trump, he actually, his policieses and what hes doing is working across the board. Gerry the Democratic Party, some say, has taken latino voters for granted for a long time, perhaps just as they have, actually, with black voters. Do you think thats true . I think its very true. Again, President Trumps policies, hes delivered to the Latino Community as far as lowest Unemployment Rate, 3. 9 before covid, and people are going to vote their pocketbooks. Weve had more home purchases by firsttime buyers under his presidency, weve had a highered Median Income under his presidency, and people are going to vote their pocketbooks. Theyve going to vote Public Safety. And this is why i think President Trump is doing an amazing job, and people are gravitating to hum across the country but especially here in nevada. Gerry what do you hear from voters about covid . As you said, you know, the economy was in great shape before covid; record low unemployment numbers for latinos and others too. The president doesnt get very good marks about handle of covid. What are people in nevada saying to you about that . They really want to get back to work. We know how to keep ourselves safe and, you know, do all the ppe, and whats happening here is our governor is continuing to shut things down, and this is not working well for nevadans. We finally are opening bars back up tonight the, and we are, you know, we know how to social distance. We have all the major corporations open during covid, so Small Businesses were really concerned why couldnt we open . We know how to social distance and keep, make sure people are safe. So its the republican cities and republican governors, the states that have done well during covid. And people see this. People gravitate now to republicans because they understand that they care about Public Safety, but they also care about putting food on the table. Gerry final question, councilwoman. The proportion of latino voters is expected to rise sharply over the next 20, 30 years. Its already the largest single Minority Group already about 13 of the total vote, its going to grow enormously. How will that change the Republican Party and politics over the next ten or so years . Well, once again you saw under the Obama Biden Administration that they didnt deliver. They didnt deliver to the minorities. And i think its very important to continue with President Trumps policies, and the republicans continue with those policies that work for people, that put money in their pocket, that keep public, you know, we have great public safe i think, and thats how i think youre going to see more and more people walk away and gravitate to the Republican Party, because our policies work. This week we were treated to the latest example of how even the nations most distinguished universities are damaging their own reputations. The university of chicagos English Department announced that this year it will be accepting applications to a graduate program only for those with an interest in black studies. Quote english as a discipline has a long history of providing aesthetic rationalizations of colonization, exploitation, extraction and antiblackness. Some of us would say that english as a discipline has a reputation for some other things too, but what that means is perhaps youre a brilliant black scholar who has a particular interest in tennessee williams, forget it. No matter how original your mind, they only want it to be working in one direction. This, unfortunately, is just a new level of maoist toaltarian control. My next guest, dr. Jason hill s is a professor of philosophy and author of the book we have overcome. He himself has been on the receiving end of this kind of intolerance, vilified for his proisrael views. Now hes calling to shut down universities, wrote a piece that says, our universities risk losing their status as learning sites and becoming National Security threats. We need to defund, bit canned and re disband and rebuild them. Thank you very much, indeed, for joining us. Thank you for having me. Gerry tell us about the experience youve had and the ways in which people have objected in very strong ways to your right to exercise your speech. Well, yes. I have been an around debit defender of israel ardent defender of israel, and i have taken positions that have not fit with farleft positions on University Campuses or leftwing positions and students and faculty have sought to censure me and to punish me for those views. And i think that our universities have become National Security threats because theyre no longer bastions of learning, they have become Indoctrination Centers which preach antiamericanism, antiindividualism, anticapitalism, hatred of reason. And the demonization of the western canon and of enlightenment values and are turning our citizens into actual enemies of the state. Gerry how just will the me ask you, how on earth did we get here . Again, american universities have tremendous, world class reputation, as you say, for excellence. How did we get to this situation where they seem to be kind of marx, neomarxist factories . I can tell you very clearly, the chickens have come home to roost. We got here in the 1960s with the emergence of these fake disciplines. When social activism and activist scholarship like black studies, like womens studies, like queer studies, like postcolonial studies, these were what we call activist scholarship where add slow ca cat city and concern where activism replaced scholarship and replaced, i attacked the canon. Attacked region, attacked logic, accused logic and reason as being in peerless construct of white racist meant to marginalize and disenfranchise people. With the introduction of postmodernism which is a nefarious, antireason and relativistic system that attacks reason where we had no objective criteria for adjudicating among truth claims, where feelings became the criteria for adjudicating truth claims, so everyones feeling, including the village id yacht idiot, is more equivalent to the experts, the chickens have come home to roost. Its the e emergence of these fe disciplines where activism and social justice causes replace scholarship. Gerry i always thought that the idea of logic and reason and truth were white peoples constructs. Its so profoundly racist thing to say, but let me ask you weve not got too much time what can be done . What needs to be done to redress this situation in the universities . I think, first, there are two things. I think, first of all, parents need to take a much more active role in what their students, their children are being taught in school. I think most parents are concerned with just upward social mobility and the grades that their students are earning, and there they are not very cond with the kind of indoctrination and brainwashing that their children are being fed, hatred of this country. We dont alumni need to start defunding these universities, and the federal government most universities, private and public, of course, are recipients of federal funds. And the federal government needs to hold these universities and the faculty mostly in the humanities and social sciences accountable for the kind of brawn washing brainwashing the refusal to teach proper Critical Thinking skills to students, to defund these universities, to shut them down whe
