SAF costs around four times the level of conventional jet fuel but, with production of the cleaner fuel poised to climb in the coming decade, there is potential for that price premium to diminish, according to industry sources. The ETS provides an incentive to aircraft operators to use SAF that complies with the sustainability criteria by attributing them zero emissions under the scheme. That reduces an aircraft operator's reported emissions and, in turn, the number of ETS allowances it must buy, according to the EU Aviation Safety Agency.
