On a single night in January 2020, 37, 252 veterans were victims of homelessness. And as the pandemic rages on, those numbers have only gotten worse.
Back in 2011, I felt like a walking cliché: a homeless, young veteran with PTSD as my drinking buddy. I’m from Chicago, but New York put me in a headlock upon arrival. I was greeted by 18 inches of snow, failed to find work, and got ditched by my roommate. Days were spent on subway trains with nights on subway platforms absent of heat, my sleep frequently interrupted by NYPD cops with a penchant for harassing the homeless. After putting my pride aside, I found myself in a cot in a room surrounded by 12 men, some of whom smelled like Olde English and new vomit.
