Fitchburg State, UMass Medical receive Leading by Example Awards from state Fitchburg State University and UMass Medical School have been recognized by the state for clean-energy programs. The two Central Mass. institutions received Leadership By Example awards, according to an anouncement Friday by the Baker-Polito Administration. Eight awards were handed out this year. - Fitchburg State was recognized for its overall sustainability effort, including a switch from oil heating systems to natural gas systems, comprehensive recycling and waste-diversion programs and installation of a first EV charging station. - UMass Medical earned the award because of its energy efficiency program in the Lazare Medical Research Building and the installed of 14 EV stations, with 18 more in the works.
