"The Saber-Toothed Salmon," Ketchikan High School's five-member National Ocean Sciences Bowl team, is ready to participate in the virtual Tsunami Bowl later this month.
On March 10, which was designated as Kayhi's NOSB Day, the team spent several class periods presenting its research paper and accompanying presentation to peers, while engaging in a quiz-bowl style competition about topics ranging from marine biology to maritime history.
The team, coached by Keenan Sanderson with assistant coach Laura Sherill, includes five first-time competitors â sophomore Romel Del Mundo; juniors Kai Biagi, Kaydence Dyson, Ellie Pickrell; and senior Jolie Powers.
"For everybody being first year (participants) in the program, I'm really blown away by everybody's ability to adapt to all the changes we've had to deal (with), all the coronavirus stuff and everything being virtual this year," Sanderson told the Daily News during a break in NOSB Day.
