Flashback Staten Island: Castleton Avenue lined with vital structures Updated Feb 06, 2021; STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Castelton Avenue runs from Nicholas Avenue in Port Richmond to Jersey Street in Tompkinsville, passing through West Brighton along the way. Many vital structures have stood along the avenue, and many still stand today. Perhaps the most memorable was the castle-like hospital built in 1890, The Smith Infirmary. The Ruskinian Gothic building was named after local doctor Samuel R. Smith, but was later known as the Staten Island Hospital. The hospital moved in 1979 to Ocean Breeze and abandoned this structure. The castle was deemed a hazard and demolished in March 2012.
